KRA Cup Classic: Clean Up Joy vs Cheongdam Dokki (Race-By-Race Preview – October 22)

It’s the showdown that we’ve been waiting for. At least for the past three months anyway. It was disappointing that both Clean Up Joy and Cheongdam Dokki swerved the Korea Cup last month but they finally do meet at Seoul Racecourse on Sunday, taking top billing in the local Group 2 KRA Cup Classic. There are 11 Sunday races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 12:40 to 17:10.

Here are today’s Seoul notes:

Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

Twelve fillies to kick things off and this looks a slightly softer ask for (3) P.K. TIME than when she could only manage 3rd place when favourite over 1000M on September 9th. This is her first try at the distance but she should be at the front early and can go all the way. (5) FOR J.K and (10) FIORE finished 3rd and 4th when racing each other over 1200M a month ago and both should be competitive here with Fiore fancied to overturn that form while the more experienced (12) DONGSEO GADEUK should be getting close in this company too. Similarly experienced, (7) STORMY PASSION is another to take into consideration.

Selections (3) P.K. Time (10) Fiore (5) For J.K (12) Dongseo Gadeuk
Next Best 7, 11
Fast Start 3, 6, 9

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile race with enhanced prize money sees seven of the twelve racing for the first time. However, it’s from those with experience that we draw our top picks. Both (2) GLOBAL BANK and (3) THE JIJON came home in 2nd place on their respective debuts in September and it’s The Jijon, who led until the closing stages over 1200M, who is favoured to score here with Global Bank having to settle for 2nd once more. They’re both (more…)

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 21)

There are 12 Saturday races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(11) BROWN BOMBER ran a solid race in 2nd place at this distance on what was just his second outing on September 16th. He ran on nicely, finishing strongly and while he may probably want a little bit further in the long term, this race looks eminently winnable for him. Not much else catches the eye, to be honest. (2) MORAN DONGBEAK has shown improvement across her three starts so far and looks to be second best but all of the others are going to need to show something they haven’t looked like doing so far. Something has to fill the places though with (3) BIG AURORA, (5) JI SEONI and (10) CULLINAN perhaps most likely.

Selections (11) Brown Bomber (2) Moran Dongbeak  (5) Ji Seoni (3) Big Aurora

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(4) FIRST RUNNER enters having been 3rd on each of his latest two, although both were at 1700M and he gets dropped back in trip today. He should still get close but there are a couple of others who also look to have claims on a maiden win here. (6) CAPTAIN POWER was much improved on his third outing a month ago, beating (1) SHARP KAYLAN, who also showed progress that day with both in the prize money hunt here. (3) CLEAN UP SECRET has come home in 5th place on both of his outings so far but he was beaten by decent ones last time at this distance and can get closer here. (11) FIRST QUEEN is another who has come close in the past and who can’t be ruled out today.

Selections (6) Captain Power (3) Clean Up Secret (4) First Runner (1) Sharp Kaylan
Next Best 11, 2

Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Only three of the twelve have raced before but all of those three did quite well and are likely to be well backed here. (2) SIMPLE RULES led for much of her debut and while she ended a well-beaten 3rd, it was a strong showing for a debut she has solid claims today. (11) PRIMO was 4th in a similarly competitive race on September 9th while (12) SEUNGJAUI MISO finished in the same position over 1200M a week later. Both should join Simple Rules on the early speed and can go well again. Among the first-time starters (more…)

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 20)

One of the most eagerly awaited clashes of the year will take place at Seoul this coming Sunday when Grand Prix Stakes winner Clean Up Joy returns to action to face the up and coming pair of Cheongdam Dokki and New Citadel in the KRA Cup Classic. Before that, however, the weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday with 11 races from 11:30 to 18:00:

Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(2) BUSAN BOLT beat (1) DYNAMIC RUN as the pair ran 2nd and 4th over this distance on September 22nd and one or other of them should really be stepping up to claim their maiden win here with Busan Bolt slightly favoured. (8) HANEOLUI GISANG has shown promise across two starts so far and looks another who is ultimately bound for the winner’s circle with it possibly being here while (6) BAENGNYEON SIDAE has also been getting closer and could well lead early here. (5) HAEDONG YEOGEOL another in the placing frame.

Selections (2) Busan Bolt (8) Haneolui Gisang (1) Dynamic Run (6) Baengnyeon Sidae

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

Five of the twelve have raced before and it’s one of those, (6) KOREAN ANGEL, who will be the favourite. She was 2nd, just beaten half a length, on debut on September 1st and looks nicely into score today. Of the others with experience, (1) DORAON SAEGANGJA and (8) MAJOR ALPHA look to have most chance of improving – the latter was very (more…)

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview

Big race action returns to Seoul today (Sunday) with the running of the Munhwa Ilbo Cup. The Sprint is the feature of an 11-race program in the capital which runs from 10:45 to 18:00. At Busan, there are 6 races from 12:40 to 17:05.

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(6) MASK is ready to win. He almost slipped over turning into the home straight on debut in July but still managed to finish 3rd before running 2nd on his return in August. He’ll be on the early speed here and really should be winning. (3) LUCKY BONGHWA was 3rd, two and a half lengths behind Mask in that August race, continuing the progression that he’s shown in each of his three outings so far and he looks to be the main danger although (5) ROYAL ACE has come close once or twice and could be in the hunt too. (2) M.J. CAPTAIN comes in off a 2nd place finish last start and will likely join Mask on the early speed while (10) DAECHEON ACE was a creditable enough 5th of 9 on debut a month ago and the jockey booking will attract some.

Selections (6) Mask (3) Lucky Bonghwa (2) M.J. Captain (5) Royal Ace

Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Enhanced prize money for this juvenile contest and it sees six first-timers taking on six others who have each started once before. And a number of those experienced ones did well on debut and are likely to be favoured over the newcomers here. (3) KING POSE is the pick, running on fluently for 3rd on debut over 1000M on September 10th and the extra furlong should suit just fine today. (5) EMERALD KING and (12) BAEKSAN GUNJU (more…)

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 14)

Seoul is back from the long holiday and on what is a set to be a cool but fine day in the capital there are 12 races from 10:45 to 18:00:

Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

We begin with a filly-only contest and a nice competitive one at that. (6) AMENDA wasn’t far off 3rd place on debut in August, coming home 5th but then improved to 2nd on her re-appearance on September 3rd. She’s not the quickest of starters but is up slightly in trip today and has as good a chance as any here. (3) RUBY BEOLKIN returned from a lengthy absence to record a sound 3rd place at this distance last month. She looks a much better filly now and can continue to progress here while (2) JEGUKUI HUYE was favourite when stepped up to 1700M a month ago but didn’t see out the trip. She should be much happier back at 1300M where she scored her best finish to date. (5) SAUVIGNON and (8) CHEONGUN ILHO, both at this distance for the first time, are others with scope to go well.

Selections (6) Amenda (3) Ruby Beolkin (2) Jegukui Huye (5) Sauvignon
Next Best 8, 1, 4
Fast Start 3, 9, 11, 12

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Seven of the twelve are racing for the first time but it’s among the five who have each raced once previously where we find out pick. That’s (12) GEUMA THUNDER, who may have been ten lengths behind the winner on debut at this distance on September 9th but that was no disgrace. He led for much of the race and ran on for a comfortable 2nd place (more…)

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 13)

It’s back! After a week’s break for this year’s rather lengthy “Chuseok” holiday, racing returns to Korea this weekend. Things get underway at Friday for an 11-race card with the first at 11:30 and the last at 18:00. Time to get stuck in:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Competitive opener. (1) CHANG GONG and (2) BELLAMY GONGJU raced 5th and 6th at 1200M a month ago. It was Chang Gong’s debut and he showed enough to suggest he has some promise, leading early. There were no expectations on (3) DONE IT MY on his debut the same day but he managed a very creditable 3rd and won’t be overlooked this time. (4) SEOGANG JILJU didn’t enjoy the extra furlong last time and may be better dropped back in trip today while the Bart Rice pair of (5) CHRISTIANO and (8) CLOVER QUEEN may also have a say.

Selections (1) Chang Gong (4) Seogang Jilju (8) Clover Queen (3) Done It My
Next Best 5, 2

 Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

Half the field have raced before while the other half make their debuts here. We’ll go with experience and a number of them raced each other last time. (8) SMART DANCER, (9) YEONGGWANGUI BOSS and (5) DIVIDE WIND ran 3rd, 4th and 5th on their own debuts on September 15th. Punters will likely make Kim Young Kwan’s Divide Wind favourite to overturn that today, especially given the draw should allow him to get on speed early but (more…)

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Power Blade vs Triple Nine / Final Boss (October 1)

It’s the final day of racing before the Korean Thanksgiving break and at both Seoul and Busan, some of the top names on the peninsula are coming out for a run. The day’s main attraction is on the south-coast where stablemates Triple Nine and Power Blade face each other once again, this time in the Kukje Sinmun Cup. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 12:40 to 17:05.

Power Blade finally got the better of Triple Nine in the Owners’ Cup over a mile in August and had he had a slightly ore favourable draw at Seoul last month, could well have won the Korea Sprint. At 1400M today he will be favoured to prevail once more over Triple Nine, who is yet to win since returning from Dubai. Also among the small field of eight are Success Story and Seoul raider City Star.

Korean Derby winner Final Boss returned to winning ways over 1800M in August and today he too steps down to a Sprint distance in the concluding race 11. He’s up against sprint-specialist Choegang Schiller over 1200M which means he carries a very light weight.

Only Seoul is simulcast overseas today – here are the notes:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

It’s been a long time coming but (8) STORMY PASSION should finally get her maiden win today. She’s been getting closer, culminating in a 3rd place three weeks ago but has always run into one or two too quick. It will be her first time as favourite and she should have too much against this limited set of opponents. Main danger is (11) GEUMEUN JUOK, who has been a little one-paced but shown glimpses of ability across three improving outings to date. (6) I AM WINNER made an underwhelming debut in August but looked useful when trialling up again a couple of weeks ago and may have something to contribute if she gets a good start while (5) DUSON EYE and debut-maker (12) CHOEGO BISANG are others who could go ok.

Selections (8) Stormy Passion (11) Geumeun Juok (5) Duson Eye (6) I Am Winner

Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Restricted to juveniles this one with six first-timers joining three who have raced before. It’s one of those three, (7) MAGIC TEN, who will be the strong favourite. She finished off very nicely for 2nd over 1000M on debut at the end of August and given the extra furlong today, should win. (4) SEOURI BYEOL similarly should be happier today at this distance than she was on her own debut and can improve. None of the debut-makers were hugely impressive in trials although (3) CLEAN UP TEUKGEUP will be backed by virtue of having recorded the fastest time. Likewise, (9) ROYAL TANK also showed that he knows what he’s supposed to in the latest of three trials he went through a couple of weeks ago.

Selections (7) Magic Ten (4) Seouri Byeol (3) Clean Up Teukgeup (9) Royal Tank

Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Competitive contest. (1) CLEO and (5) GOLD LEG are both up in class following decent showings at class 6, the latter running out an all the way winner by three lengths over 1300M last time. Both should be competitive at this level. They won’t be favourites though. (4) MENI BADA didn’t quite get home when well backed on his first try at the distance on September 2nd. The two-year-old shows promise though and should have learned from that. He can win today. Also with promise is (2) HARPY EAGLE. The

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 30)

Saturday racing at Seoul: 12 races from 10:45 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Not exactly thrilling fare to begin with today but that means it’s very open and we’re looking for something to improve. (7) DIA RUNNER did ok in a couple of starts in Spring and while her latest effort was nothing special, she drops back to 1000M today and looks in the frame. Likewise (1) MORAN DONGBEAK improved on what was just his second start last time out and could develop today. (2) ARGO UNIQUE, (8) DORAON PACHYAI and (10) CHEON NOK are the only ones in the field to have previously recorded 3rd place finishes with the former of those perhaps most likely to repeat or go better. It’s a great race to debut in and as such (12) SEONGUNG, a very late-starter who looked ok in a trial just last week, has to be given a chance.

Selections (1) Moran Dongbeak (2) Argo Unique (12) Seongung (7) Dia Runner
Next Best 8, 10, 3
Fast Start 3, 4, 6, 10

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Katsumi Yoshida-owned (2) BRANDON showed a bit of promise in three outings in late spring and early summer culminating in a 2nd place at this distance. He’s been off since then but returns here as favourite. (7) WIND POWER beat (6) HONEY RUSH as the pair ran 3rd and 4th over the distance on September 2nd and Wind Power looks to be the primary danger here. Honey Rush was six-lengths back that day when sent off as favourite following a good effort the time before and could get back into form. (1) NAEGA JAL NAGA was 4th, his best finish so far, three weeks ago at this distance and can match that here while (5) SUPER COBRA, making just his third start today, steps up in trip for the first time and could benefit.

Selections (2) Brandon (7) Wind Power (6) Honey Rush (5) Super Cobra
Next Best 1, 4
Fast Start 6, 7, 8

Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Another race that’s not exactly loaded with talent and therefore, (3) K.N. BLUE, an encouraging 4th on debut at the end of August in a race that was arguably tougher than this, has to be favourite to score under champion jockey Moon Se Young. (2) GASOK SHINHWA showed a bit of talent when 3rd of 7 at this distance on September 2nd on what was just her second outing. She can get on the early speed today from a good draw and can go all the way to get close. Also needing to get on that speed early is (8) BLACK MUSIC, He did that on September 3rd and recorded a 2nd place at this distance, his best finish to date. (1) GIDONG DAEJANG and (10) KWAEDO YEOWANG are others in with a shout of improvement.

Selections (3) K.N. Blue (2) Gasok Shinhwa (8) Black Music (1) Gidong Daejang

Race 4: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Restricted to two-year-olds and therefore with enhanced prize money but just nine runners. Five of them go for the very first time and it’s to one of those we turn for the pick. It’s generally wise to treat trial times with caution but the manner in which (7) NIKE STREET won her trial two weeks ago suggests she needs to be taken seriously. It was a performance that would have seen her win many actual races and if she brings that to the track today, she’ll win this gate-to-wire. Of the other debut-makers, (6) TAMNA YEOSIN was the one that caught the eye, winning her trial handily. As for the ones who have raced before, (4) BISUL GONGJU finished off well for 4th on debut at the beginning of the month and has to be considered. We’ll expect her to be ridden forward earlier today. (1) JIGONG JEIL was also 4th on her debut a week later although was a bit further back and a little less impressive.

Selections (7) Nike Street (4) Bisul Gongju (1) Jigong Jeil (6) Tanma Yeosin
Next Best 8, 3

Race 5: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(2) MENI TURBO is in danger of contracting a severe case of “second-it is” A pair of runner-up finishes in her first two races saw her up in class and she was then 2nd once more on her first attempt at this level on September 2nd. In fairness, all three who have beaten her so far look decent types and she was only a half-length back last time. She has a good draw today to get away well and we shall give her another chance. Should she end up beaten again, (1) DALLYEORA PACHYAI, who is putting together a fine run of near misses himself and is accordingly up in class today, could be one to take advantage. (8) JILPUNG DOKJU has proven capable of winning money at this class already and should be close again as should (5) HWANSANGUI DOYAK who was 4th behind Meni (more…)

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 29)

It’s the final weekend of racing before the “Chuseok” holiday one-week break and that means it’s big fields all round! Twelve runners in every race at Busan on Friday. 10 races from 11:30 to 18:00:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

We get underway with twelve first-timers here. (8) BLUE FLAG is a “full” sister to Gyeongbudaero, one of the best Korea-bred horses in recent years. Her other three-half-siblings have all been winners as well and she could well kick-off her career with victory today having trialed up well. Main danger looks set to be (4) CHEONYEONUITAEYANG who went through a second trial earlier this month and looked to have come on considerably since originally qualifying in August. Others to catch the eye prior to debut are (12) MAJOR ALPHA and (7) APPLE GOLD, both of whom put in decent times in their heats.

Selections (8) Blue Flag (4) Cheonyeonuitaeyang (12) Major Alpha (7) Apple Gold

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Tricky maiden this but a few of them have started to show some signs of improvement. (9) BLESS YOU comes in following three solid performances in slightly tougher company than this and the step up in distance for the first time could be exactly what she needs to make the breakthrough. (4) GHOST WARRIOR has already shown ability at this distance with a 2nd and a 3rd place. He’s not a quick starter but should get up to come close again. (12) DAEHO MYEONGGA was a much improved 2nd on his own first try at the distance last start while (6) SEDA and (10) QUEEN STEALTH are among others who could find some more today.

Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

Only one of these has raced before and he did ok. (7) THUNDER STRUCK was 3rd of 12 on September 1st having previously impressed in trials and that’s enough for him to be favoured to get the job done here. Pick of the first-timers is (1) SUMMIT TODAY. She won her trial by nine lengths despite a steady start and 1200M looks the ideal debut distance for her. Distant 2nd in that heat was (5) WHINNY WING and he too could go ok first up although (12) DORAON SAEGANGJA, who beat a couple of these when winning a trial at the start of the month, is likely to be a little more favoured. Also winning a trial was Thomas Gillespie’s (8) HANEOL GONGJU and she is another to keep an eye on.

(7) ADELE HERO returned from almost six months off at the start of September to put in his best performance to date, running 3rd on what was his first try at a mile. He’s the slight pick to go two better this time. (6) CAPTAIN GUY is the least experienced in the race with just the one outing behind him. He was slowly away but flew home over 1000M on September 1st to finish 4th, albeit some way behind the first three. He gets to stretch out in distance today and may get much closer. (8) GOOD PARK hasn’t been too far away and is another who may benefit from the step up in trip while the same applies to (10) MANSUN. One who does have experience at this distance is (11) ROYAL TRIPLE and she too may be considered here.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (September 24)

Two big Juvenile races take centre-stage Sunday, with both Seoul & Busan staging preps for the Breeders’ Cup Championship race. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 while at Busan there are 6 from 12:40 to 17:05.

Busan’s race is the Gold Circle Trophy and has attracted nine runners. Bart Rice’s unbeaten Task Force looks in with a shout although Kim Young Kwan’s Classic Match is likely to begin as favourite. In Seoul it’s the Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup and Icheon Ssal is set to be at the head of the market. Also at Seoul, the exciting Cheongdam Dokki goes in race 10. Here’s the race-by-race preview for Seoul:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

3rd on debut all the way back in June, (8) SKY CAMP finally returns to action today and looks to be the one to beat in the opening maiden. (2) CLEAN FLOWER beat (11) BLACK WIND as the pair ran 4th on 5th on what for both of them was their first time on August 26th. There was just a half-length between them and while they were several lengths behind the winner, both were encouraging enough to suggest they can improve. Already showing some improvement is (3) BABY STAR, 4th on her second outing after a lacklustre debut. (7) HESEDEU and (10) GOLDEN RUNNER others who look like having some potential.

Selections (8) Sky Camp (2) Clean Flower (3) Baby Star (11) Black Wind

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

There were seven months between (5) STAR SINBI’s debut and his reappearance but both efforts showed promise and having briefly led close to home over this distance on August 26th, he just got bested by a neck on the line. He is one of three standouts here and has every chance. (8) SHAR NAO was an improved 2nd over this distance three weeks ago and is in the hunt again while the front-running (1) HWANAE JANGSEONG could well get a soft early lead here and can go all the way. The winner should be one of those three but (10) JUNGDONG JIJON and (11) GOLD SEUTAK are not without claims either, at least of a place.

(5) MUCH MONEY faded a little late on when stepped up to 1700M last month but was still not too far away and should be much happier dropped back in trip today. He may have a habit of finishing 2nd – five times in ten starts – but he is a slight favourite here, ahead of (10) GEUM BONGHWANG, who also steps back in trip today. (4) HUIMANG POINT consistently comes close and should do so again while (12) IN BORN CHAMP comes in following 2nd place at class and distance on August 27th and carries a very light weight under an apprentice jockey. (3) KING PLUCKY is another who had a hard time around two turns last start but should be better today.

Only two of these have raced before and neither of them (them being (2) FLYING CAR and (7) GAL PYOBEOM) impressed. That leaves us with ten debut-making imports to consider. (4) JEONGSANG BULPAE almost made it to the starting gate back in June but was scratched. He was forced to requalify as a result and he did that with aplomb three weeks ago, running a fast time. Accordingly, we’ll make him favourite here. (1) MYEONGGA JEWANG and (6) BULMYEORUI JEWANG also went well in their heats and (more…)
