Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (March 24)

Saturday racing at Seoul sees 11 races from 10:45 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

Twelve maidens to kick us off. (2) SPEED YEOWANG registered her second career 3rd place finish last time out beating a couple of these in the process. It was a full eight-weeks ago so she comes in relatively fresh and has as good a chance as any of making the breakthrough here. (7) UN SEO was one of those beaten that day, but she ran well enough on reappearance at the end of February to suggest that she can come under consideration here. (5) GEOBOOGI MANSE and (6) HWANSANGUI BIT have both hinted at the potential to put in a good performance and can go well. The latter is likely to be on the early speed alongside (8) YOLO, who improved on his second start a month ago and can continue to make progress today.

Selections (2) Speed Yeowang (5) Geoboogi Manse (8) Yolo (7) Un Seo

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

More maidens but this time it is restricted to three-year-olds. (6) BAEKDUUI JEONGSANG enters after back to back 3rd place finishes, both at this distance, and looks the one to beat here, most likely looking to lead all the way. (9) CLEAN UP SECRET ran a good 3rd back at the beginning of January, beating Baekduui Jeongsang, and was set to be well backed when scheduled to face that one again in February. He had to be scratched as some blood was found in his nostrils prior to the race but nothing else was wrong with him and he returns here for a stable that is having its horses come into form. (1) SEONGAM JEUNE was a decent 4th on debut on February 25th, beating four of these in the process and should beat plenty again, while (2) MASYA already has a 2nd place to his name at the distance and can at least aim to match today.

Selections (6) Baekduui Jeongsang (9) Clean Up Secret (2) Masya (1) Songam Jeune

Race 3: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(10) WOOSEORA ICHEON ran well for 2nd at class and distance on February 25th, beating a couple of these along the way. His win came at this distance too and while he will want to get on speed early and will need to overcome the wide draw, he is capable of winning this. (12) SIMCHEONG SADAL was 5th in that race, about three lengths behind Wooseora Icheon, continuing a decent run of form and he can get closer today with the wide gate less of an issue than for the favourite. Another one draw wide, (11) MALAKAS can also go better than recent finishes suggest, facing slightly softer company today than in his latest couple of starts. Three horses step up in class today, two of them, (8) BANGGEUT BANGGEUT and (9) FIRST QUEEN, following maiden wins at this distance. Of the pair, Banggeut Banggeut looks most equipped to make an immediate impact at this level. The third one up in class is (3) DAECHEONUI SARANG. Despite being yet to get her first win, she has performed very nicely in her latest two starts and should be competitive at this level.

Selections (10) Wooseara Icheon (11) Malakas (12) Simcheon Sadal (8) Banggeut Banggeut

Race 4: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(6) ROYAL ACE remains a maiden following twelve attempts, but he has a very good chance of getting off the mark here. He’s been getting closer with a 3rd and a 2nd in his latest two, both at the distance, albeit well back behind the promising Galaxy Power last time. He’s not a front-runner but so long as he doesn’t leave himself too much to do, he can win this time. (8) JEONGSANG DOLPUNG and (4) BIG THUNDER finished 1st and 2nd at this distance at class 6 in January. Big Thunder went on to win himself last month at that level while Jeongsang Dolpung made a promising start to class 5 life with 4th place at 1300M three weeks ago. Both should be dangerous here. (11) THE JIJON, who has beaten Jeongsang Dolpung in the past, went ok on his first try at this class last time and can build on it here while (1) EAGLE SKY looks best of the rest.

Selections (6) Royal Ace (8) Jeongsang Dolpung (11) The Jijon (4) Big Thunder

Race 5: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million

It’s doubtful the track record will be under threat in this 1700M maiden, but it makes for an interesting betting affair. (7) ONNURI ALBA has proven competent in three prior tries at the distance, beating no fewer than four of these on his way to 3rd a month ago (February 24th, race 7). Each time, he has just had to come from a little bit far back and if he is ridden a little bit closer today, he should be least slow of this lot. (2) JEONG SAMPUM and (1) HANSEN BAROWS were 3rd and 4th in that race and while they have three lengths to make up on Onnuri Alba, they could well be the greatest threats today with the latter expected to get a soft lead. (9) CUPID GANGJA was further back that day but can improve. Among those who didn’t go that day, (6) STRONG CAPTAIN looks the most likely to pose a threat.

Selections (7) Onnuri Alba (1) Hansen Barows (2) Jeong Sampum (9) Cupid Gangja

Race 6: Class 5 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(8) BROWN BOMBER may be yet to win in seven career starts but he’s yet to be very far away, either. Since two 2nd place finishes got him promoted to this level, he’s been 4th on three consecutive occasions, and today he can get it right on his first try around two-turns. (2) MAMKKEOT DALYEO has also proven competent at this level and should be close on what is also for him a first try at the distance but the up in class (5) GEUMBIRANG should pose a threat too. He ran on very nicely for a five-length win over 1200M a month ago and while he has both the increase in class and distance to deal with, he should come through it. (7) GWASOK DOLPUNG beat (10) ROYAL TANK and (4) WONDERFUL CHAMPION as the trio came home 3rd, 5th and 6th at class and distance on February 24th, with all three likely to be involved again.

Selections (8) Brown Bomber (5) Geumbirang (2) Mamkkeot Dalyeo (7) Gwasok Dolpung

Race 7: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

A winner of two from four so far, (6) CYBER came up short when favourite at this distance on February 24th, leading but weakening a little late on. He should get on speed here and this time he should stay on all the way. (2) OFFI SAEMI race for the first time since early December and while he wasn’t going well before the layoff, he looked much better when winning a trial a month ago and comes back straight into contention. (3) STORM RYKER is one race into a comeback after a ten-month absence and should improve today while (4) I AM STAR and (9) DELTA K both drop back in trip today to a distance they finished 5th and 3rd respectively at when racing each other in January, and both should be in the frame.

Selections (6) Cyber (3) Storm Ryker (9) Delta K (2) Offi Saemi
Next Best 4, 7
Fast Start 3, 5, 6, 9

Race 8: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(11) YAHO SMART CAT is two for two but that means he’s rapidly up in class to take on 1300M for the first time. He came from a wide draw and from well back to run on very nicely at 1000M last time, so the trip is not too much of a concern but there’s no question he faces a sterner examination today. (2) RAON ALICE finished 4th of 8 in a tough juvenile race on Christmas Eve and was 5th in a very tight finish on his only start of 2018 so far six weeks ago at 1000M. He looks most likely to lead here and can go all the way. (9) YEONDARA’s recent form reads very well and he’ll be sure to be a threat while (1) DAEHAENG DAEBAK and (7) SHARK PARTY should be in at least the placing frame.

Selections (2) Raon Alice (11) Yaho Smart Cat (9) Yeondara (7) Shark Party

Race 9: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Spring At Last gelding (1) GOLDEN BLACK was a very encouraging 2nd on debut over 1200M on February 25th. He beat a couple of these and ran on very well, suggesting that the extra half-furlong today could suit nicely. He’ll take a bit of beating. (2) MONTEVIDEO was 4th behind Golden Black in that race last month and looks a good candidate to get closest although (3) RAON ROCKY has to be taken seriously having won at class and distance last start. Those two are expected to set the early pace. What to do with (4) ICHEON SSAL? At one time a Derby-trail hope, that’s off the agenda (barring a couple of very good wins) but he ran well for 3rd over 1300M last month and can match that here. (6) STAR PLATINUM, 3rd over 1200M on what was his second career start in January, looks best of the rest.

Selections (1) Golden Black (4) Icheon Ssal (3) Raon Rocky (2) Montevideo

Race 10 Selections: 7, 10, 9, 5
