Seoul Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 17)

Busan takes a weekend off so there’s a bumper 15-race Sunday card at Seoul Racecourse. The first race is at 10:45 and the last is at 18:00. Here are the previews:

Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

(4) CUPID DOCTOR has been getting closer and closer across three starts so far and managed a good 2nd place over this distance on November 12th. She should get a fast start in this all-filly race and lead all the way. Probably the banker favourite all day. (1) POX RANGER and (5) KYU JEU came home 3rd and 4th at the distance on November 18th. It was a big improvement for Pox Ranger although Kyu Jeu had already shown some ability and both look in with a shout here. The time before that, Kyu Jeu beat (9) RAON MIRACLE but she too showed improvement next start, landing a good – albeit not very fast – 3rd place at this distance.

Selections (4) Cupid Doctor (5) Kyu Jeu (9) Raon Miracle (1) Pox Ranger
Next Best 6, 2
Fast Start 4, 3, 5, 9

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Small field of juveniles here but it contains a few who have shown promise already. (2) LEONNING STROM is top pick having been a good 2nd on debut at 1000M last month. He ran on nicely and should do well over the increased trip today. (5) VICTORY STAR looked good in two outings in September and October. She trialled up in good shape too in November and can go well. As can (7) LET’S YEONGCHEON, a creditable 3rd on debut four weeks ago. The modestly named (3) BRILLIANT and the more complex-named (6) NAEGA KKEUTPANWANG also have potential to improve.

Selections (2) Leonning Strom (5) Victory Star (7) Let’s Yeongcheon (3) Brilliant

Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Ten juveniles here with four of them racing for the first time. (3) CHEON MONG only managed to finish in 6th place on debut on November 19th but it was in a well-run race in a strong time and he just about gets the nod to win here. Fellow experienced ones (5) DALLYEORA RAON and (7) INDIAN ECO may also improve on their debuts but it is to the debut-makers that we turn to find the bigger dangers. (9) LUCKY ROOKIE won his trial last month and gets a top jockey on here so will be backed while Hansen filly (2) SILVER DESIGN also held her own in her trial and can go well in what is a nice race to debut in.

Selections (3) Cheon Mong (9) Lucky Rookie (5) Dallyeora Raon (2) Silver Design
Next Best 7
Fast Start 3, 6, 9

Race 4: Class 4 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

Three of these juveniles come in having come close to getting their maiden wins last time out and all three will be supported to achieve it today. The one with the best chance is (9) FLYING BOSS, who while well beaten by a good winner last time, has shown plenty of potential. He drops to the minimum distance for the first time today and can go very well. (2) RICHARDOFNEWSTEAD has led both his races so far, only to get taken down in the closing stages. He’ll surely be on the early pace again and could well hang on this time. (4) PARK SOCKS was 2nd on debut at this distance and will have plenty of backers too. He was beaten that day by (5) SUN LIGHTING, who went on to have a hard time in a valuable race over 1200M a month ago, weakening late on. Back in trip and in more amenable company today, he’ll be a big threat.

Selections (9) Flying Boss (5) Sun Lighting (2) Richardofnewstead (4) Park Socks

Race 5: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Small field and it’s hard to look much further than (1) ROYAL TANK, who showed improvement when put up to this distance three weeks ago running 2nd in what was admittedly not a strong race. Neither is this though and a similar run today should see him home on top. The rest of them will need to find plenty with (8) UPDATE probably best placed to step up. He ran ok on his previous try at the distance and while he is distinctly lacking in speed, can probably beat most of these. We’re scratching about a bit after that so (2) STRONG CAPTAIN, who does have a 2nd place in his records and (6) MINDEULRE CHUKJE, who has a 4th at this distance, look next best.

Selections (1) Royal Tank (8) Update (6) Mindeulre Chukje (2) Strong Captain
Next Best 4, 7
Fast Start 3, 8

Race 6: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(1) P.K. TIME only managed to beat one home in a stiff contest a month ago but she really has to be given another chance here, dropped back to the minimum and up against more amenable opposition. She looked good in her first three starts and she’s every chance of leading gate to wire. (6) MALAKAS looked great on debut back in August but struggled on his first try at this level in September. His latest run gives some cause for optimism though and he should be among the contenders here. (5) WINNING WIN has weakened on both attempts at further than this so may well appreciate being dropped back in trip today. (8) ROYAL ESSENCE always runs at this distance and was 3rd behind a couple of useful looking types last time. (10) SOKBO TAEJA is a class and distance winner as recently as October and must be considered.

Selections (1) P.K. Time (6) Malakas (10) Sokbo Taeja (5) Winning Win
Next Best 8, 11, 2
Fast Start 1, 3

Race 7: Class 5 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 90 Million

No fewer than six of the eight here come in having won their latest start – and the other two are pretty handy as well. Only one has a 100% record though and it’s the one who has only raced once before. (7) BIG EAR was a remarkably quick winner over 1000M on debut on October 28th. She’s up in both class and distance today but the manner of that win was such that she has to go on top here. (8) SIMPLE LIFE wasn’t quite so impressive in getting his maiden win on November 5th but still did it in good enough style to warrant consideration while (4) HIGH BEAT’s win a week later was very promising too. (1) SAUVINGNON and (2) SEOURI BYEOL are both proven winners at further than the minimum while (5) PENETRO’s 5th of 9 last time was by no means a bad result, given the horses he was up against.

Selections (7) Big Ear (5) Penetro (8) Simple Life (1) Sauvignon
Next Best 2, 6
Fast Start 4, 7

Race 8: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

It’s taken (5) SHARK PARTY a few races to get accustomed to this level but he looks to be getting there with 3rd place in a race arguably a little stiffer than this on November 12th and he’s the narrow pick to score here. (2) TITANIA too has shown she’s competitive at this level and will likely set the early pace while (6) SKY BIG, who remains a maiden, enters on a run of four consecutive 4th place finishes but should really go a little better than that here. (1) BROWN BOMBER is also a maiden but is up in class and distance following a decent 2nd place at 1000M last time. He can be competitive at this level just like (4) GWACHEON TUHON proved with a solid, if unexpected, 2nd at class and distance on November 19th.

Selections (5) Shark Party (2) Titania (6) Sky Big (1) Brown Bomber
Next Best 4, 9
Fast Start 2, 3, 7, 9

Race 9: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Another wildly open contest. (2) DONGBANGUI GIEOK debuted underwhelmingly in April and didn’t re-appear until November. He impressed though, running 2nd over 1300M having briefly led not far out. Back at 1200M today, he has every chance. So does (3) MIGHTY SSING. A class and distance winner already, he was overmatched in a valuable race last month but should be more comfortable today. Those two are likely to be on the early speed and will be joined by another of the favourites, (8) ACE KING. He was beaten by Might Ssing too starts ago before going on to also struggle in the very same valuable race last month and better will be expected today. (4) TO GO WIN is yet to do that but hasn’t been too far away while solitary debut-maker (1) PRINCE MEMORY won his trial and can enter consideration.

Selections (2) Dongbangui Gieok (3) Mighty Ssing (8) Ace King (1) Prince Memory
Next Best 4, 11
Fast Start 1, 2, 3, 6, 8

Race 10: Class 4 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(5) SPASTAR is in the form of her career with a 2nd, 3rd and finally a win from her latest three outings. She’s been no better than seventh in the betting in any of those three races but today will surely be very well backed. She does carry an extra 3kg but there’s not a whole lot here she can’t beat. (7) FINE CHAMP is up in class following a decent win over the distance and can come into consideration while (6) SARYEONI WIN generally goes close and should be involved once more. (2) ALPHAKAN ‘s latest two have been poor buy he can be given another chance while (3) KKUMUI CLUB steps back up in trip following a good performance at six furlongs last month.

Selections (5) Spastar (7) Fine Champ (6) Saryeoni Win (3) Kkumui Club
Next Best 2, 12
Fast Start 7, 10, 12

Race 11: Class 3 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Another where the winner could be anything although dropped back in trip to a distance that suits, (6) GHOST TOWN is picked to score, most probably attempting to lead all the way. Indeed, most of the favourites will be trying to get onto the early speed, principally (10) TAEHUI NALGAE, who beat three of these when racing 2nd at class and distance a month ago, and (11) SUPER CAPTAIN, who can be forgiven for tying up badly in the closing stages over 1400M last time. (5) RULES has been getting closer in recent outings and is worthy of note, as is (12) MR. CHAMPION, who will need to overcome being drawn wide but should be involved in the finish.

Selections (6) Ghost Town (10) Taehui Nalgae (11) Super Captain (12) Mr. Champion
Next Best 5, 8
Fast Start 1, 6, 7, 10, 11

Race 12: Class Open “The Trainers’ Cup” (1400M) Allowance / KRW 200 Million

Korean Derby winner (2) FINAL BOSS is a maddening talent. It’s hard making a case the a Derby winner has underachieved but there is a sense that Final Boss could still be much better. It’s been a while since he went over 1400M but he really should be closing out his season on a high here and should win. (5) SOTONG SIDAE, who finished just a neck behind Final Boss when they ran 4th and 5th in the President’s Cup over 2000M last month, can be a danger while (4) SINGYU GANGJA was 3rd in a quick race at class and distance on October 29th and can get close once more. (1) GASOKBULPAE came home last in the Korea Sprint back in September but is much better than that. He won a trial three weeks ago and can be considered here.

Selections (2) Final Boss (1) Gasokbulpae (5) Sotong Sidae (4) Singyu Gangja
Next Best 6, 7, 3
Fast Start 1, 6, 8

Race 13: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

(5) TIZ RUN beat a couple of these on the way to a good 2nd place over 1700M on November 11th and could well go one better today. Both those behind him that day should be in the hunt with (3) KRYPTO KID perhaps more likely than (12) HWAGANG to get closer today. The other race we need to consider leading in here was over 1900M on November 18th. (9) GIANT KILLER came out on top that day, finishing in 2nd ahead of (8) TOGETHER HUG and (1) HWANGGEUM BISANG. Again, all three can be involved with Together Hug more favoured here. Wildcard is (10) TAEYANGUI HUYE, up in class following a good win at 1700M last month and under a light weight today.

Selections (5) Tiz Run (3) Krypto Kid (8) Together Hug (1) Hwanggeum Bisang
Next Best 9, 10, 7
Fast Start 6, 7, 8, 10

Race 14: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

Three standouts here. (1) JANGSAN CITY beat five of these when claiming a narrow win over class and distance on November 12th. He went up 3kg for that and came home 6th on his reappearance two weeks ago. An apprentice rides today, taking him back down to a mark where he’s nicely in and he can go well. Third that day was (12) PRETTY BOY and he too looks very nicely in. He’s a closer, even at this distance, and so long as he doesn’t leave himself too much to do, he has every chance. The third standout is (8) GOLDEN GATE. He steps back to this trip for the first time in a long time but recent form is good and he’ll be well backed. (2) BEST ROAD, 2nd to Jangsan City a month ago, and (5) CIRCLE DANCER, are others who look sure to be involved.

Selections (12) Pretty Boy (1) Jangsan City (8) Golden Gate (2) Best Road
Next Best 5, 7
Fast Start 6, 7

Race 15: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 150 Million

Nice competitive class 1 to finish off with. (3) SANGGAM MAMA is the track record holder at this distance and while he was a bit lacklustre in 7th over 1200M three weeks again, he has to be worth another chance. Ahead of him that day was (7) PARANG JUUIBO, a winner last time he raced at this distance and the possible favourite. Both are likely to be on the early pace. Coming from behind will be (6) WONDER BOLT, whose recent outings have been in stiffer company than this. (2) CITY STAR was an excellent 3rd behind Power Blade and Triple Nine in the Gukje Sinmun Cup at Busan in October. He disappointed behind Sanggam Mama on his return to Seoul at the end of that month but has plenty of talent. (4) ROYAL JIBBLY, a surprisingly comfortable winner on his first try at this level on November 12th, is another in the frame.

Selections (7) Parang Juuibo (3) Sanggam Mama (6) Wonder Bolt (2) City Star
Next Best 4, 10
Fast Start 3, 7, 8, 11
