Seoul & Busan Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (November 19)

A couple of big Juvenile races highlight the Sunday programs at both Seoul and Busan. Six unbeaten ones headline the Nonghyup Chairman’s Trophy at Seoul while at Busan, Bart Rice, Peter Wolsley and Thomas Gillespie all saddle fancied ones in the Gyeongnam DoMin Ilbo. Seoul has 11 Sunday races from 10:45 to 18:00 while Busan has 6 from 12:40 to 17:05.

Only Seoul is available on overseas simulcast so previews on Seoul races are below. For Busan selections, scroll to the bottom:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(8) AMAZING PEACE beat (9) BROWN BOMBER when the pair ran 3rd and 4th in a similar race over the same distance on October 21st. There was only a nose between them, however, and both look firmly in the frame here. Neither have been the fastest of starters so far and nor has the other main fancy, Midshipman gelding (6) HESEDEU, second when favourite last start, but they will all be looking to get away quickly here and whichever one manages it best, may well win. The others all need to find improvement with (4) SKY DOLPUNG and (10) CREMOA POWER perhaps most likely while (3) POWER KOREA has demonstrated already that he can start well and could be an interesting outsider.

Selections (8) Amazing Peace (9) Brown Bomber (6) Hesedeu (3) Power Korea

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juveniles only here and it sees seven fillies up against two colts. (5) MYEONGPUM BOBAE was an encouraging 2nd on debut on October 14th, running on nicely in a quick contest and could well make the breakthrough here. She’ll be on pace early alongside the other two top picks, (7) GEUMA THUNDER and (3) HANSEN GLORY. The pair finished 3rd and 4th when they raced each other in a different race the same day, beaten only by a couple of useful looking types. (1) PRIMO also debuted well a week later, briefly leading close to home before having to settle for 2nd. There are three debut-makers and among them, (8) LAST CONCERT looked the most capable in trials.

Selections (5) Myeongpum Bobae (7) Geuma Thunder (3) Hansen Glory (1) Primo

Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

More juveniles here and a slightly weaker looking contest with a slightly stronger favourite. (3) GEOSEN MAPUNG was 3rd on debut on October 22nd, having been prominent throughout and a similar performance today should see her home on top. (1) IRYEO HAYEO and (5) SEUNGRI PLUS also showed some promise on their respective debuts and can be considered as did, to a lesser extent, (2) DUSON WANGJA. However, the main danger may come from one of the four first-time starters. That’s (8) LET’S YEONGCHEON who trialled up nicely for an in-form stable and has the champion jockey on board.

Selections (3) Geosen Mapung (8) Let’s Yeongcheon (5) Seungri Plus (2) Duson Wangja

Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies (and two mares) only here and a tricky puzzle it is too with roughly half the field looking to have claims. We’re going to go with the two who come in having won their latest starts, beginning with (2) CHEONGUN ILHO. She’s up in class after a comfortable maiden victory last time over this distance five weeks ago. That win had been coming and she should cope with the step up in competition. The other is (4) BAEKSAN YEOWANG. She was also winning for the first time but in her case, it was at this class and with another of today’s contenders, (3) PYEWOL SUHWA back in 3rd. Baeksan Yeowang does carry a little more weight today and her time was a little slower than Cheongun Ilho (on the same day) but she looks to have every chance once more. Aside from Pyewol Suhwa, others who should have a say include (6) CHO ORONG MA, a good 2nd last start and (9) SKY BIG, who is yet to win in seventeen attempts but hasn’t missed by much of late.

Selections (4) Baeksan Yeowang (2) Cheongun Ilho (3) Pyewol Suhwa (9) Sky Big

Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Another competitive race but (10) HANEULUI STAR is the pick, getting another chance having run 3rd when favourite over 1200M two weeks ago. This, if anything, is a marginally more difficult race but he won on his only previous start at the distance and can win again. Another winner at this distance in (9) SEUNGRI SIDAE, whose 6th place last time is better than it sounds as the finish was a very tight one. (8) CHEONHA JEWANG’s latest at 1700M can be discounted but his previous three at this distance saw him beaten only by decent ones and he can get close here. (1) GWACHEON TUHON and (6) COMPLETE WINNER are others in at least the placing hunt.

Selections (10) Haneului Star (8) Cheonha Jewang (9) Seungri Sidae (1) Gwacheon Tuhon

Race 6: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

2nd on debut three weeks ago and only beaten a neck, (6) MONEY BLADE can go one better here in what looks another good race. He led close to home in that debut run and will likely be on the early speed here along with the one who looks capable of beating him, (5) JEONGSANG BULPAE. The latter has raced twice already with a 2nd and a 3rd to his name, both at this distance. Those two should be filling the quinella but the only four-year-old in the field (8) LEADING RACER, did manage to beat three of these on his way to 2nd at 1000M a month ago and can beat plenty once more. One of those beaten was (2) LOVE IT, who will perhaps be better at 1200M today. (4) MORPHIS, odds-on favourite on debut last month, can improve too.

Selections (6) Money Blade (5) Jeongsang Bulpae (4) Morphis (2) Love It

Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Another race with a number of potential winners. (5) SARYEONI KING looks most likely, coming in as he does with the most convincing form at this class. He nearly led all the way two weeks ago before being passed late on and ending up in 4th and could do it all the way this time. Both (2) ACE SEVEN and (3) INCITATUS had a hard time on their respective first tries at this class last month but both can improve today while (4) CHEON YANG’s latest couple have been in stiffer company than this and she can match the 3rd places she scored when tried in similar in the summer. (7) DREAM SLEW is inconsistent but goes well on his day.

Selections (5) Saryeoni King (3) Incitatus (2) Ace Seven (4) Cheon Yang

Race 8: Class 4 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

It’s her seventeenth start today, she’s never won but has finished 2nd on five out of her last six starts. Can (7) REAL GULCH finally get it right today? She may not get a better chance. She should be on speed early and can go all the way. Should second-it-is strike again, there are a number who can take advantage. (4) GANGCHEOL SIDAE was a 40/1 class and distance winner three weeks ago and will be given more respect today while (2) SIMBA THE NEXT has been improving and looks suited to the distance. (5) CHOWON BOLT and (12) SONOGONG are others in the hunt.

Selections (7) Real Gulch (2) Simba The Next (4) Gangcheol Sidae (5) Chowon Bolt

Race 9:  Class Open (1200M) Allowance – The Nonghyup Chairman’s Trophy / KRW 300 Million

Valuable race for juveniles and there is plenty of potential among them. Six of the thirteen enter unbeaten. In the case of five of those, they have only raced once but (7) P.K. PARTY comes in five for five. She’s the only Korean-bred runner in the race and as such as able to begin racing at class 6 whereas the rest of these had to start at class 4. P.K. Party has made her way up to domestic class 3 where she was winner of a very quick race at this distance by a nose a month ago. She has claims here but this does look to be her toughest test so far. Others with more than one race behind them include (1) MOONHAK CHIEF, who has won three in a row now and has solid claims here while (8) OP SEVEN won his first two with ease before coming up short last month at class 3 but certainly looks a decent prospect. As for those unexposed ones, (9) OHTHE PAZIBILITIES was an eye-catching winner on debut, making all for a facile seven-length win at this distance. Similarly impressive was (11) SKY BAY, who put eleven-lengths into her rivals first-up back in September. She’s not raced since but dominated a trial two weeks ago and can be considered.

Selections (7) P.K. Party (1) Moonhak Chief (9) Ohthe Pazibilities (8) OP Seven
Next Best 11, 3
Fast Start 2, 4, 7, 11

Race 10: Class 1 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

(4) JANGSAN COWBOY was 3rd behind top three-year-olds Dolkong and New Citadel in the HKJC Trophy over 2000M in September and while he was beaten by (6) HURI BARAM at 1400M last month, he has every chance of winning this under a nice light weight. If he does he could well be headed to the Grand Prix in December. Huri Baram is one of the prime contenders to stop him but while (7) SINJO DAEHYEOP may have been beaten fourteen-lengths by Cheongdam Dokki in September, there’s no disgrace in that and he should have the beating of plenty of these. (2) WONDER BOLT remains a quality horse even if neither weight nor distance is on his side here while (9) BANYA DONGHAENG is up in class after back to back wins and could be the surprise. Never discount (3) WINNING ANDY from a placing chance.

Selections (4) Jangsan Cowboy (7) Sinjo Daehyeop (6) Huri Baram (2) Wonder Bolt
Next Best 9, 10, 3

Race 11: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Three winning streaks on the line here. (1) NEW PARTNER and (5) SUPER CAPTAIN have both won their latest three while (2) GAMGYEOGUI SUNGAN comes in looking for the hat-trick today. Super Captain’s most recent was at this class while the other two step up today. All three are in the hunt with Gamgyeogui Sungan looking most likely to continue following an impressive six-length score last time. However, it may be that they all come up short. That’s because (4) PHOENIX SUN is also up in class following a very nice four-length win of his own at this distance. He hasn’t raced since the end of August but looks very nicely in here. (10) GEUMTUSA, beaten less than a length by Super Captain on October 22nd, can also be considered.

Selections (2) Gamgyeogui Sungan (4) Phoenix Sun (5) Super Captain (1) New Partner
