Seoul Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (July 30)

The Ilgan Sports Cup takes centre-stage at Seoul on Sunday. It’s part of a 14-race card from 11:45 to 19:00. English racecards can be found here. Notes on all overseas simulcast races can be found below:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

1. JIGONG JILJU – Showed early but faded in both starts so far. Likely to be on speed again but an outsider.
2. CHOICE BLUE – Debut-maker. Took him plenty of tries to qualify and he can’t be backed first-up.
3. JANGSAN JEGUK – Solid 3rd on debut on July 1st ahead of a couple of these. Big chance here.
4. BLACK CASHMERE – Comes in following two consecutive 3rd place finishes and a win looks just a matter of time. On speed early under good jockey booking.
5. WINNING WIN – First-timer, he’s by a Korean Derby winner but didn’t exactly impress in trials. One to watch rather than back first up.
6. GASOK SHINHWA – Debut-maker. She came through a couple of trials, actually finishing 2nd in one. Slow time though and outsider today.
7. GEUMBIT HWANHYANG – 7th of 9 on debut behind Jangsan Jeguk and Raise Me Up. Should improve for that run.
8. MORAN DONGBEAK – First-time starter. Average in trials and won’t be hugely well backed here.
9. KKEULEOJUNEUN SON – 3rd on debut in quick race over this distance on June 24th. Strong claims today.
10. BOMBI’S KING – Improved 3rd last start at 1300M. Drops back to the minimum for the first time since debut and can go well again.
11. GIDONG DAEJANG – Only beat a couple home on debut and has plenty to find.
12. RAISE ME UP – 4th behind Jangsan Jeguk on first ever start at the beginning of this month and can look to at least match that today. Half-brother to Korean Derby winner.

Verdict: (9) KKEULEOJUNEUN SON and (3) JANGSAN JEGUK were both 3rd in their respective debut races and they look the top picks here with former the choice to prevail. (12) RAISE ME UP was 4th, just a neck behind Jangsan Jeguk on what was her debut too and she may also be considered but will have to overcome the outside gate. Among those with a little more experience, both (4) BLACK CASHMERE and (10) BOMBI’S KING look to be improving.

Selections (9) Kkeuleojuneun Son (3) Jangsan Jeguk (12) Raise Me Up (4) Black Cashmere

 Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

1. MERLIN – Took two goes to qualify. Offered few clues in the process.
2. J.S STORM – Three of his dam’s previous ones to make the track have been winners including recently retired Geomtan. Trial was ok.
3. SIMPLE LIFE – Went through trials in average fashion. Dam had just the one previous make it to the track – and she won seven times.
4. PHOENIX HEART – Reasonably fast time in qualifying, looking competent too. Chance.
5. CREMOA POWER – The only one of these who won his trial and therefore will be well backed.
6. NONGBON DAERO – 4th in slow trial. Looked like he knew what he was doing but others will be favoured.
7. MENI JILJU – 3rd in her trial. Time was no better than average.
8. GLOBAL LINE – Only 5th in his trial but his time was the fastest of any of these and he could well be favourite.
9. SPEED CAPTAIN – 5th in his trial showing on the front early but weakening.
10. GANGSEO EUTTEUM – All Hansen’s first-time starters are likely to get some backing but this one didn’t impress in trials.
11. CHEONGANG SEONG – Average in trials. Jockey booking will attract.
12. MAX THUNDER – Trialed up behind Global Line so a bit to find.

Verdict: Twelve debut-makers here but we’ve got trials and work to go on and as a result, (8) GLOBAL LINE looks the probable favourite. He’s recorded the fastest time of these and Korean punters tend to favour that for first-time starters. We’ll favour it too on this occasion. (4) PHOENIX HEART was also quick while (5) CREMOA POWER was the only one to actually win his heat so scores points in the “knows what he’s supposed to do” category as well as the “being by Hansen” category which is popular right now.

Selections (8) Global Line (4) Phoenix Heart (5) Cremoa Power (2) J.S. Storm

 Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

1. GREEN TEA – Last of 11 on debut following an indifferent trial. Outsider again.
2. COLORS QUEEN – Comes in following a 2nd and 3rd in her latest two and maiden win looks possible here.
3. LEISUER KING – Never involved on debut eventually just beating one home. Can’t be backed yet.
4. BAEKSAN YEOWANG – 2nd, beating Hwanae Jangseong over 1200M a month ago. Ran on well and may appreciate extra half furlong. Top pick.
5. FIRE – Offered little so far and last in latest two.
6. CLEO – Close in all three outings so far and should be close again here. First start since April.
7. DONGHAE TENTENTEN – Useful 3rd place on debut at this distance racing prominently throughout. In contention.
8. SHARP DREAM – Comes in off back to back 3rd places at this distance. Competition looks slightly tougher today but don’t rule out.
9. HWANAE JANGSEONG – Almost managed to make all but ended up in 3rd on what was just his second start last month. Could go close.
10. UN SEO – A 3rd and three 4th place finishes among six outings to date. 4th would be a decent result again.
11. KYU JEU – Offered little in three starts around the turn of the year. First start since February and didn’t trial up especially impressively.
12. ECTON SINHWA – Six months between debut and second start and she improved on her return three weeks ago. Still a bit to find before she can be strongly considered.

Verdict: Competitive affair this and we’ll make (4) BAEKSAN YEOWANG, a close second last time to make the most of today’s extra half-furlong and score. (7) DONGHAE TENTENTEN looked promising on debut last month and can continue her development here likewise (2) COLORS QUEEN and (6) CLEO look to be eventually bound for higher levels than this and have claims of their own.

Selections (4) Baeksan Yeowang (7) Donghae Tententen (2) Colors Queen (6) Cleo

Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

1. JEONG SAMPUM – Two outings so far with a bit of improvement shown in the second of them. Can continue upwards trajectory today and look for minor money.
2. SINUITAB – 3rd last time at odds in excess of 90/1. Is she finally figuring things out? Good opportunity to back that up against weak opposition here.
3. GOLDEN MISSILE – No better than 5th – a position she’s managed three times – from seven so far. 5th a good result today.
4. SKY VALUE – Sent back to trial for being too slow after both his first two, he finally ran properly on his return earlier this month. Still an outsider.
5. BEST GEOPO – Debuted last summer but was then off for a year. Come close in two starts back and is in the frame here. Strong finish compared to most of these.
6. JILJUUI CHANG – Finally figuring things out with his two best finishes among his last three starts. Slight backwards step last time but worth another go here.
7. PYEONGCHON CROWN – Debut-maker, she put in a decent effort in trials. Watch the market.
8. KWAEDO YEOWANG – Always runs at this distance and while she’s never managed better than 3rd, she’s usually not too far away. Placing chances again.
9. OFFICER WOMAN – Best from seven prior is a 5th place. Always beats a few but finds a few others too quick and that should continue here.
10. NEULPUREUN CHEONHA – 5th last time was his best to date, Outsider.
11. FOREST ROSE – Scored an unlikely 2nd over 100M in April but didn’t go well at this distance last time.

Verdict: Another tricky contest but we’re going to stick with (6) JILJUUI CHANG. While last time’s 6th place wasn’t great, an apprentice jockey (who looks a good one despite being yet to get her own first win) takes 4kg off today and with a good start, a maiden win is on the cards at the 17th time of asking. (2) SINUITAB and (5) BEST GEOPO enter off encouraging performances and should get close while (8) KWAEDO YEOWANG is another to take note of, at least for a place.

Selections (6) Jiljuui Chang (5) Best Geopo (2) Sinuitab (8) Kwaedo Yeowang

Race 5: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

1. SERAMOND – Dropped back to this trip last time and put in a good 3rd. Tends to just run out of steam at the end of races but can get close again.
2. GIMOA LAUNCH – First start since February. Was going well before the layoff and trialed up in swift fashion last week. Not impossible.
3. KWAEHAN YEOJANGBU – Class and distance winner last time out, making all. May not be so easy today but still every chance of backing up a winner again.
4. LUXURY HAPPY – Struggled in two outings at this class since maiden win in May. Still potential though, especially at this distance.
5. BOSEOG SANGJA – 8th of 11 on first try at this level when stepped up to 1200M last time. Back at the minimum today should be better but still a bit to find.
6. GEUMBIT ROAD – Raced all the way round in 2nd when beaten by a good winner at 1200M last time, there looks to be another win in her. Could be here.
7. GAJANG MEONJEO – Not found it easy at this level but get a good start and anything could happen.
8. JILPUNG DOKJU – 3rd and a 4th in two starts at this level since maiden win, both at this distance. Solid chances again.

Verdict: Tight race with (8) JILPUNG DOKJU just having the edge after two really solid performances at class and distance. He looks like he will ultimately compete at a higher level than this. (6) GEUMBIT ROAD too looks to have another win in her following a good 2nd place last time. (3) KWAEHAN YEOJANGBU must be respected following her class and distance win last time and she could repeat.

Selections (8) Jilpung Dokju (3) Kwaehan Yeojangbu (6) Geumbit Road (2) Gimoa Launch

Race 6: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

1. JEOKBYEOK SHINHWA – Looked ok in trials and can put in a solid performance first up here.
2. OP SEVEN – US$25K purchase as a yearling, he wasn’t quick in trials and will be an outsider on his debut.
3. BADA CHIEF – He’s raced once before and was well backed. He didn’t justify it, finishing 7th of 10 but may well have come on for it and will be backed again.
4. SAMRYUK EUTTEUM – 2nd in his trial in a reasonable time. Placing chances first-up.
5. SIMBA THE NEXT – Only beat one home on debut on July 2nd over 1300M. May benefit from being tried at shorter today.
6. FLYING MUNNING – Solid 4th of 10 on debut at this distance on July 1st ahead of Bada Chief. Big chance today.
7. QUEEN’S DRESS – First tie starter, she won her trial very comfortably and is sure to be well backed today to kick off her career in winning fashion.
8. JEONGSANG CHAMP – US$30K yearling purchase. Trialed up well enough and every chance of putting in a decent first showing.

Verdict: Five of these race for the first time today and one of them, (7) QUEEN’S DRESS is set to be favourite. She won her trial by an eye-catching twelve-lengths and if she brings that form to the races, she’ll win. The other debut-maker to take note of at this stage looks to be (1) JEOKBYEOK SHINHWA but it’s the ones with experience who are likely to be the main dangers. (6) FLYING MUNNING was a good 4th on debut and can improve today while (3) BADA CHIEF disappointed a little in the same race but gets another chance here.

Selections (7) Queen’s Dress (1) Jeokbyeok Shinhwa (6) Flying Munning (3) Bada Chief

Race 7: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

1. WINNER BLACK – Had a hard time at this level and is an outsider today.
2. COLD STAR – Struggled in recent starts. Jockey booking is the angle.
3. CHEONNYEONHORYEONG – Two 3rds and a 5th from his last three starts, all at this distance with varying tactics each time. A chance.
4. GEOMJIN – It’s her 21st start today and could it be 21st time lucky? She’s been close in all six starts so far this year and she has a big chance of a maiden win.
5. MONTRACHET – Good 2nd over 100M last start. Her previous try at this distance didn’t go well but she won at 1200M and must be in the frame here at least.
6. SAEROUNSIN – Not a lot in recent form to recommend.
7. BARIME CAMP – Didn’t win but was close enough in first four outings to get promoted to this level. 6th of 11 in tougher race than this last time and can challenge today.
8. MARBLE QUEEN – Up in class following maiden win at this distance on June 24th. A bit to find but no reason why she can’t find it.
9. BAEKSAN CHAMP – Had a hard time in four outings at this level since maiden win in February.

Verdict: (4) GEOMJIN is yet to score in twenty previous tries but looks to have her best chance so far her. She’ll be on the early speed and could go all the way. If she’s to fall short once more then (5) MONTRACHET could be the one to take advantage. Her previous attempt at this distance didn’t go well but she’s worth another chance here. Up in class (8) MARBLE QUEEN was a shock winner last time but could continue to develop while (3) CHEONNYEONHORYEONG and (7) BARIME CAMP also could be dangerous.

Selections (4) Geomjin (5) Montrachet (8) Marble Queen (7) Barime Camp
Next Best 3, 9

Race 8: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

1. LEAD MONEY – Returned from three months off to run 3rd over 1400M on June 4th. Chance here.
2. SINGGEUREOUN GEOM – Winner on first try at this class at 1300M a month ago. Extra 4kg today but still firmly in the hunt.
3. GEUMSOWHA – 2nd on first try at this class and distance on July 1st. Front runner who may be difficult to dislodge if she can get the lead.
4. DOUBLE J – Drops back in trip for the first time in a while after recent efforts at 1700M. Could place in this company.
5. MONGGEULMONGGEUL – Back to back class and distance 3rd places in April and May but well back behind Singgeureoun Geom on latest appearance.
6. GEUMGOKSEONG – Up in class today after placing a few too many times at class 5. Looks nicely in and can get close.
7. CURRICLE – Struggled in six outings at this level before being dropped back to class 5. Promptly won at this distance and is back up today. Outsider.
8. GARAM SANSEONG – Can beat a few at this level but shouldn’t be troubling the judges.
9. GALSAEK JEOLLYEONG – Two starts this year haven’t gone well and he’s an outsider today.

Verdict: Two standouts here. (2) SINGGEUREOUN GEOM won on his first try at this level a month ago and while he’s up in the weights, he should be away to a good start and can win again. Joining him on the early speed is the other big player here, (3) GEUMSOHWA, 2nd at class and distance last time and another who is hard to beat if she leads. (1) LEAD MONEY and (4) DOUBLE J look best of the rest.

Selections (2) Singgereoun Geom (3) Geumsohwa (1) Lead Money (4) Double J
Next Best 6, 5

Race 9: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

1. SUPER LIGHTNING – Recent form is pretty cold and she’s an outsider here.
2. NEW HIGH TIME – Back to back wins in April and May got her up to this level and she was a decent 5th of 11 on first go at it. Solid chance today from better draw.
3. OFFIDAY – Two starts into a comeback following a lengthy spell. Showed some glimpses last time of returning to form and can build on that today.
4. CHEON YANG – Enters off consecutive 3rd place finishes both at 1300M. Solid claims here.
5. PAX RYE – Been getting further away in recent efforts.
6. MR.FORTUNE – Looked a potential star around the turn of the year but the classes have caught up with him. Steps back from 1700M and can be competitive today.
7. RAON NARA – First start since February. Wasn’t going well before the layoff and didn’t trial especially impressively.
8. NEON GAMDONGIYA – 8th of 11 on first try at this level last time having won two of his first five. Can go better today.
9. HUIMANG POINT – No worse than 4th in four tries at this class and should be maintaining that record today.

Verdict: (2) NEW HIGH TIME struggled to make an impression from a wide gate last time but still got up for a close 5th place. She looks to have a much better chance of getting on the early speed today and if she does, she can win. (4) CHEON YANG has been 3rd in both her latest two and can get closer today while (3) OFFIDAY looks to be coming back into some form. (6) MR. FORTUNE and (9) HUIMANG POINT others to consider.

Selections (2) New High Time (4) Cheon Yang (3) Offiday (9) Huimang Point
Next Best 6, 8

Race 10: Class 3 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

1. CHOEGO BISEUL – A winner at this class in April, she was a reasonable enough 4th last start at the distance. A chance.
2. GLOBAL DREAM – Winner of four from five so far, he’s up in class here but has every chance of winning again.
3. DAONMARI – She’s won her last four and is up in class today. In all her wins she’s made all and that may not be so easy today but if she gets in front, she’ll be hard to beat.
4. BEST NINE – Began the year as runner-up to subsequent Derby winner Final Boss but has only raced twice since then and has underperformed.
5. LUCKY MUSIC – Struggled so far this year.
6. DEUMJIKI – Creditable 5th of 11 over 1700M in May but only beat a couple home at 1200M last start.
7. BOLT SIGN – Last of 8 on first try at this level following class 4 win over 1400M in June. Looks up against it again.
8. DEOKSAMHO – Last of 11 on latest start. Managed a 3rd place the time before but this looks challenging.
9. GEUMA ZEUS – 2nd on first outing at this level at the end of May. A couple of months off since but looks to have solid claims here.
10. DAEBO MYEONGGA – First start since January. Won a trial a couple of weeks ago and looks to be the wildcard among these.
11. TIZ KING – Not far away in all four attempts at this class. Looks nicely in and has placing claims once more.

Verdict: Intriguing race this one. Both (2) GLOBAL DREAM and (3) DAONMARI enter on winning streaks and something has to give on what for both of them is a first try at class 3. Both should be competitive but it’s very possible that both streaks will come to an end with (9) GEUMA ZEUS who comes in fresh a couple of months after just being beaten a head over 1400M at this class. He’s the pick.

Selections (9) Geuma Zeus (2) Global Dream (3) Daonmari (10) Daebo Myeongga
Next Best 11, 1

Race 11: Class 5 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

1. PRINCEPS – Class and distance winner last time, beating Gongjangmyeongwang and Strong Shine into 2nd and 3rd. Weight isn’t up too much and big chance again.
2. SILVER LION – Disappointing 6th when favourite on first try at this level last time. First start at two turns today and in the hunt.
3. ROYAL MATTHIAS – Struggled at this level since maiden win in March.
4. GONGJANGMYEONGWANG – 2nd to Princeps at class and distance last time. Has been getting closer to another win and she could overturn the form today.
5. BIG SKY – A little inconsistent but has been beaten by Strong Shine in three of his last four outings.
6. CUPID PARK – Not too far away in recent efforts and should be close again. Others may just be a little quicker though.
7. STRONG SHINE – 3rd behind Princeps and Gongjangmyeongwang in June. Two 4ths since them and a bit to find to overturn that form.
8. CHIU YEOJE – Decent 3rd at class and distance was an improvement. Repeat not impossible.

Verdict: (1) PRINCEPS beat (4) GONGJANGMYEONGWANG and (7) STRONG SHINE as the three of them filled out the 1, 2, 3 over class and distance on June 10th. The former two race for the first time since and it could go either way between them. Strong Shine has raced twice since and another 3rd or 4th looks on the cards while (6) CUPID PARK is proving a solid competitor at this level and can find the money here too.

Selections (1) Princeps (4) Gongjangmyeongwang (7) Strong Shine (6) Cupid Park
Next Best 2, 8

Race 12: Class Open (1800M) – Ilgan Sports Cup (Listed) Allowance / KRW 200 Million

1. PERFECT SHINE – Well back behind five of these in the Sports Chosun and lots of form to overturn today.
2. MY BLADE – Improved last time, top jockey on board. Won’t be among favourites but not impossible.
3. BIG TRIO – Comes in off three consecutive wins by varying degrees of ease. Toughest assignment yet and two turns for the first time. Big chance.
4. YEONGNONG – 6th in the Sports Chosun, Plenty to find.
5. GAIA THUNDER – 7th in the Sports Chosun was about in line with expectations and he’ll be an outsider here.
6. ROYAL VICTORY – 2nd in the Sports Chosun and has to be respected here. A chance.
7. KAWON – Back to back wins going into the Sports Chosun where he was 5th. Should be looking to get a bit closer today.
8. HAETBINNA – Defied long odds to run 3rd in the Sports Chosun. Won’t be among favourites again.
9. JANGSAN POWER – Led for much of the Korean Derby before weakening late on but returned to the winner’s circle at the end of June over 1700M. Could get close.
10. RAON MORRIS – Plenty of talent but recent form has been cold. The wildcard.

Verdict: Six of these raced each other in the Sports Chosun Cup over 2000M on June 18th. That day (6) ROYAL VICTORY was the best of them, coming home in 2nd place with (8) HAETBINNA and (7) KAWON the others who emerged with credit. The main danger though is one who didn’t go in that race. (3) BIG TRIO has been a revelation in his latest three outings, scoring by as many lengths as he pleased in each of them. It’s a much tougher test today and he tries two turns for the first time but French jockey Johan Victoire could be looking at a Listed race winner here.

Selections (3) Big Trio (6) Royal Victory (7) Kawon (9) Jangsan Power
