Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 16)

It’s Grand Prix Stakes weekend. Full coverage of Sunday’s big race to follow but in the meantime, the weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday with a ten–race card.

English race cards are here. Notes on races 4-7 below:

Race 4: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 13:35

Thomas Gillespie’s (7) GOLDEN TROPHY has shown good promise in two starts so far, most recently just beaten a head into 3rd over 1200M on November 18th and he is favoured to break through here. (10) JIBONG YEONGUNG Is yet to score in ten starts but has improved of late, registering his best finish so far of 2nd three weeks ago at this distance and can come close here as can (8) NAVARRA who narrowly beat him the time before. (2) WINNING ALL and (12) STYLISH are among others with claims.

Race 5: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 14:20

Peter Wolsley’s (9) HAESEONG STAR has a 2nd and a 4th to her name both at this distance and she looks best place to win here. Meanwhile, David Miller’s (10) WOLHADOKJAK has shown promise in his six starts so far without breaking through but was an improved 4th last time out and can be competitive here. (5) CAPI RUN has been 4th on each of his last three outings and should look to go better while (8) ALSO POWERFUL and the more experienced (11) SEUNGNI JEONGSEONG should be capable of beating plenty.

Race 6: Class 5 / 1000M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:05

(4) HAPPY GONGJU was a winner on debut three weeks ago at this distance and while she is up in class here, she has every chance of maintaining her 100% record. She didn’t start quickly last time though and on speed will be (2) CHARTERED DREAM and (7) YUSEONG FIRST, both of who have won money at this level before. So too has (12) LOOK AT ME, a well beaten 2nd last time out a month ago but in contention here, while (8) SULTRY HUMOR is up in class following her maiden victory at the third attempt and while she has a little to find, she too can be competitive.

Race 7: Class 4 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 15:50

(6) GO JJANG seems to thrive at a mile and while she was narrowly beaten last start at domestic class 4, she looks very nicely in here against imported opposition. She will look to lead from the gate and looks the one to beat. The Peter Wolsley-trained pair of (5) PPUDEUT and (10) HEUMUT have also shown signs of wanting a mile or further. Ppudeut was 2nd over 1400M last month while Heumet managed 3rd at this distance just two weeks ago. The latter beat (2) OCEAN LINE by a nose and that one too should be in with a chance today. (8) SWEET MYEONGUN looks best of the rest.

Race 8: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 16:35

Six of these race each other at this distance on November 18th and they filled the top six places. Winner that day was (7) GOLD BLUE and while he will be carrying and extra 3kg here, he must be respected. 2nd that day and pre-race favourite was (5) WOOA, who finished a length ahead of (3) ACE SINHWA and those are the two others from that race who look to have solid chances again here with Wooa slightly favoured. Among those who didn’t go in that race, (4) YEGEURINA, slightly disappointing last start when beaten by, among others, (12) BIHOJA, looks best.

Selections: (5) Wooa (3) Ace Sinhwa (7) Gold Blue (4) Yegeurina
Next Best: 9, 8, 12

Race 9: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 17:30

Kim Young Kwan’s stable may be focused on Sunday’s Grand Prix at Seoul but his (8) ATHENS is up in class following a battling win over 1300M five weeks ago and he’s one of two stand-outs here. The other is Peter Wolsley’s (6) LIMITLESS WIN, who was only beaten a head on his first try at this class at 1400M at the end of October. They are both strong finishers and at this distance, Limitless Win is favoured. Next best is (7) ACE POWER who comes in following a 2nd and a 4th, both at the distance. He beat (2) BETTER THAN YOU two weeks ago but the latter is better than recent results suggest so ay improve here. (5) DONGBANG BULPAE took his chance in a class 1 race last time out and needless to say, will find the company more amenable today.

Selections: (6) Limitless Win (8) Athens (7) Ace Power (2) Better Than You
Next Best: 5, 1
Rating: 6, 2=3, 1=7
Fast Starters: 4, 7

200M-Finish: 1, 6, 3, 9, 5

Race 10: Class 2 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 18:00

(9) SAEROUN STEALTH, an also-ran in a couple of legs of the Korean Triple Crown this year, comes in following three consecutive 2nd place finishes, beating a number of these along the way and is the pick to return to the winner’s circle today. There are plenty of others capable too though. (7) ACME was an encouraging 4th over 1400M on what was his first try at this level last month and can improve here while (2) GABOGAPJJANG is up in class following victory at the distance on November 11th. He should be on speed early from gate 2 and can go all the way. (6) HOSEUNGJIBYEOK was 3rd in the Korean Oaks in June and comes in following back to back 2nd place while (3) SHARP GALE heads a number of others who can’t be ruled out.

Selections: (9) Saeroun Stealth (2) Gabogapjjang (6) Hoseungjibyeok (7) Acme
Next Best: 3, 12
Rating: 6, 2=3, 1=7
Fast Starters: 1, 2, 5, 12
