Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 10)

Punters will return in Korea on Friday in a limited way. With the exception of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province and Jeju Island, the rest of the country was returned to a “level 3” Covid alert which means that the racecourses and betting locations in those areas can open at 20% capacity. Of course, the majority of the population – and the vast majority of betting outlets – are in Seoul and Gyeonggi so it is not much, but it is a start with a total of 4,538 seats available for punters spread around the Busan Racecourse, the two Busan OCB’s and the OCB’s in Changwon, Gwangju, Daegu and Cheonan. Reservations must be made in advance through the My Card app, with no walk-up admission. Busan gets the weekend’s action underway with 7 races from 12:35 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

The seats shall be used this week! (Well not these, ones. These ones are in Seoul)

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

It will surely be third-time lucky for (1) DONGTEUJA BOY. He has finished 3rd in both his starts to date, both times behind promising horses and at his latest in a time two-and-a-half seconds faster than any of the others who go here have achieved for this distance. He draws nicely on the inside to sit on pace or handy and he should be too good. (2) MENI GLORY raced three times in the first half of this year, coming home 2nd on the first two of them. He races here for the first time since April, but looked well when leading and ultimately 2nd in a barrier trial just last week. So long as he didn’t leave his race in the trial, he has little to fear here bar the favourite. (4) DOCTOR PENTAGON didn’t do too much wrong when 5th on debut over 1000M on August 14th. He should have come on for that run and can go closer here. (6) HAEUNDAE BLUE has hinted at progress across three starts to date and from a good central draw can be in the mix here. (5) USEUNG HUNTER ran 4th on debut over 1000M back in February. He hasn’t raced since but ran well in an August trial and comes in with the benefit if an apprentice claim.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

Tricky race here. Likely favourite is (11) TWO TWO LIME, who has a 2nd and a 3rd in two attempts at this distance so far. She draws wide but overcame gate nine when runner-up two starts back, and carries a nice light weight. She has claims. So too (3) RUN AND GUN. Not the fastest of starters, she has a tendency to get a bit far back in her races but runs on well and has the fastest time for the distance of any of these. The only concern about (8) DAMYANG JEWANG is that he comes back in after almost six months out. He has a runner-up finish to his name at this distance and at a mile and while he didn’t offer too many clues when trialing up on a wet track in August, if he can pick up from where he left off, he has a winning chance. (4) ANNIKA GIRL has mixed her form but at her best can place in this company. (1) GALLOP BOY was a much-improved 2nd at this distance three weeks ago and from the inside gate can maintain that momentum here.

Selections(11) Two Two Lime (3) Run And Gun (8) Damyang Jewang (4) Annika Girl

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Weak maiden here. Four of them raced one another in a very similar class and distance race on August 13th. (9) TRIPLE STORM only managed to finish 7th in that race but it was his first time at the distance and he had previously run consistent times when not too far away over 1400M. He tends to get a bit far back in his races so may need a bit of luck but he could overturn the form. (8) SINBIHAN GANGJA came out the best of them that day, coming from off the pace to work home strongly for 2nd place. That was his best finish to date and came following a significant improved two starts back having previously shown little. He is the logical favourite here. (3) NAMDO ILDEUNG hinted that she might be figuring things out a little quicker than Sinbihan Gangja. She ran 5th in that August 13th race having shown on pace early. She draws well again and should have learned from that experience last time. Among those who didn’t run in the August 13th race, (6) SEONGSAN BULKKOT comes in off a front-running 2nd over 1400M last month and can be competitive here while (1) HONEY STAR steps up to a mile for the first time and it may suit.

Busan Race 4: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

Good race this with plenty of plausible winners. (4) WONDERFUL JAZZ has finished no worse than 5th in six starts so far and comes in having come from off the pace to run 5th at 1400M. He steps up to a mile for the first time and there is every chance that it can suit. (11) DOCTOR TAKE was a good winner over 1400M at class 6 level two starts back before running on well for 4th over this distance on his first try at class 5 on August 13th. He draws the dame wide gate today, which shouldn’t be a problem, and he has strong claims. (9) LUCAS SUN beat Doctor Take when the pair finished 3rd and 4th when racing each other over this distance at class 6 level. Lucas Sun comes up in class today having finished a good 2nd over 1400M on August 1st and comes down in the weights which brings him into the frame here. (12) K K WON is better than the 8th he finished behind Doctor Take at his latest start suggests. He has run fast times at this distance and while still a maiden, can be in the placing frame today. Last start winner at this distance and up in class today, (7) ACE FOUR TEN is another in the hunt.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

(9) HALLA NURI measures up on just about every indicator here and comes in off a really good 2nd place at class and distance on August 13th when 2nd all the way around. She doesn’t draw well today but has run well from wide gates in the past and apprentice jockey booked means she carries a very light weight. She can win. (2) D’LOVELY QUEEN is a winner already at this distance and ran 3rd on her first try at this class on August 22nd. She draws really nicely to be on the early speed here and may not prove easy to catch. Draw a line through the latest performance of (3) MASTER QUEEN when she used up plenty of effort early to get into position from a wide gate. A natural front-runner, she draws much better this time and will be competing with D’Lovely Queen for the lead early and can be in the finish too. (4) CHOEGANG ILSE comes up in class having got her maiden win at start number seven with an all the way score over this distance on July 25th. She led in that race and from a good draw, similar tactics will probably be employed here. The wildcard is (7) WILD BLUE, who hasn’t been seen since winning at 1300M at class 6 level in April. He didn’t give us much to go on with a somewhat anonymous trial in mid-August but he clearly has ability.

Busan Race 6: Class 4 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

(6) TUHONUI BANSEOK was a superb winner at this class at start number four on August 22nd, cruising away from the field in the final furlong for an easy score at a mile. He steps up in trip today but that should suit and while the 58kg will act as a steadier, he is the one to beat again. (12) HILL MORE is up in class and looks an interesting entry here. He got his maiden win last start at a mile and his running style suggests the additional furlong won’t be a problem. He is nicely weighted and while being drawn in the widest gate is always a nuisance over 1800M at Busan, he looks a good each-way prospect. (10) BURNING PARTY is similar to Hill More in being up in both class and distance here. She is more of a front-runner but she has a light weight and at least a placing chance. (3) QUEEN UP has a lot of experience at this level and rarely runs a bad race. If you value consistency, then she’s the one, although she is another who is tackling two-turns for the first time. (1) TWO TWO LEADS on the other hand is wildly inconsistent but has run a couple of fast times at the distance and is the wildcard.

Busan Race 7: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

A really competitive race to finish with. (2) B.K JOHN is the probably favourite and justifiably so. He comes on off three consecutive runner- up finishes, two of them at a mile with the other at this distance. Tactically versatile, he draws well today and he has a good finish on him meaning there is plenty to like. (9) KING SOCKS returned from eighteen months off in July and had a hard time of it working hard to get on pace before weakening over 1200M. On the face of it, today’s is just as tough an assignment but he should be much better for that run and now, a further nine weeks down the line, could be ready to make a proper impact. (6) ROYAL TICKET beat four of these on his way to a class and distance win on August 14th when he sat handy and ran on. He comes up considerable in the weights as a result but don’t rule out a repeat. (1) RAON YEOGEOL ran 3rd in that race having led for much of it. She meets Royal Ticket on much better terms weight-wise and can get closer. (8) ECHO SUN, up in class after a smart win over this distance at class 4 level a month ago, is another in at least the placing frame.

Seoul & Busan Juvenile Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 5)

This year’s juvenile crop finally get the opportunity to race for big prizes as the “Rookie Stakes” takes place at both Seoul and Busan. There are 10 races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 12:05 to 17:00. Both meetings will take place behind closed doors. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

(12) FLYING KARA returns to action for the first time since January when he registered the second of his consecutive 3rd place finishes. Since then, nothing in this race has beaten his time at the distance and while he didn’t exactly set the world alight in an August trial the jockey booking will raise eyebrows and he can win this, regardless of the wide draw. (3) JISAN KKOT did nothing on debut in April and was then put away. She looked more accomplished when running 2nd in a trial on August 20th and from a good draw can be on pace here and competitive. (8) WONDERFUL GEUMSUNG has mixed her form to say the least but his 2nd place two starts back at this distance in a fair time is enough to make her a chance here. (4) BEST BIG BANG and (7) BITNANEUN JILJU are others who can improve.

(5) BORI BORI comes in off two strong showings at today’s distance in which she finished in 2nd and 3rd. She has the fastest time among these at the distance and is well drawn to sit handy and run on strong. She can win. (10) REAL PACK was a much-improved 2nd when tried at this trip in what was his first race this year on June 13th. From an even wider gate than today, he came from well off the pace to swoop home. Kim Yong-geun is booked today and he looks a real chance. So too (1) FEDERAL WIN, who was beaten by Real Pack in that June race but rallied on her return on July 18th when she overcame gate twelve to run a good 4th at this distance. An apprentice keeps the weight light, and she draws a much better gate today. (2) KOREA GIJEOK drops back in trip following a couple of spins around 1400M, one of which yielded a 4th place. He is unspectacular but is rarely too far away and looks a place chance here. (9) MAGIC MANJEOM, an improved 2nd at 1200M last time is another in the frame.

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Plenty in the frame here but we’ll take a chance with (2) KING SIMBA. Slowly away in all three starts so far, he came from well back to run 3rd over 1300M on August 8th. The extra distance may well be what he needs. (7) WONDERFUL K also steps up in trip having been consistent in recent efforts at 1300M and 1200M. His running style is to settle handy or in midfield and then to run on and today may suit. (6) SOUJU can mix his form, but he has the fastest time among these for the distance by some margin. From a central draw expect him to be on pace and stay on to be in the finish. (9) COOL PRINCESS is yet to finish in the top two but has five top five finishes to her name. She comes in off a strong 4th over 1300M and with Moon Se Young climbing aboard, is sure to have plenty of backers. (8) JEONGMUN POKJU is the only runner in the race to have experienced victory and it was at this distance too which on its own, brings him into the calculations.

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Good race to kick us off on the south coast. (12) KING GOLIATH has drawn the car park, but he ran well at this distance from even wider when 4th on debut and followed up with a 3rd and a 2nd at shorter distances. He has beaten a few of these already and should be settling back and running on for his first win here. (10) CATCH THE SUN has improved across three starts so far, culminating in 4th place in a fast time over 1300M on July 31st. She came from well off the pace that day so the draw may not be an issue and she can go close. (3) YEONSEUNG BRAVO drops back in trip having led for part of the way around over a mile on August 13th, ultimately finishing in 3rd. The same apprentice who rode him that day keeps the weight down here and he warrants consideration. (2) DAEHOMA enters off three consecutive 4th place finishes, all of them at this distance. Perovic returns to the mount, and he can match or better those finishes today. (6) RHIANNON POINT beat Daehoma last time out when running a significantly improved 3rd and can’t be ruled out today.

Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

Class 5 racing can be quite tasty these days and this is no exception. (6) DAESAN TEUKGEUP is up in class following two wins, the latest of which saw him fairly bolt up by eleven-lengths over 1200M, settling on the pace and running on. The slight increase of distance is of little concern and could easily win again. (8) BURUI YEOWANG has two wins and has finished no worse than 4th in four starts. She didn’t have much luck at her latest when inconvenienced at the start and then caught wide but still ran on well for 4th over 1300M. No surprise if she goes better here. (1) GOLD K has placed 3rd in both starts at this class and distance and appears to be working up to another win at some stage. He likes to lead, and the inside gate should assist him with this. (3) ENERGIZER and (5) EAST JILJU are among others with strong placing chances.

(6) FASHION BLADE was a class and distance winner two starts back when she crossed from gate twelve to sit on the speed before pulling clear on in the final furlong to win in a fast time. She then ran 3rd in all-filly company on her reappearance on July 25th at the same distance under the same weight she carries today. She draws well, has a strong finish and has every chance. (7) DOCTOR TEXAS comes up in class having beaten Glory King last start who himself went on to win on Friday. He sat just behind the leader that day and ran on to win well and is firmly in the mix again here with the step up in trip likely no problem. (2) RUN FIGHTER also steps up in trip following victory over 1300M at class 6 level. That was just his third start and having shown progression in each of them, he can measure up today. (10) QUEEN OF HEARTS ran a solid 4th place over 1300M on her first try at this level three weeks ago. She can overcome the gate to challenge for a place here. First-up since April, (5) KKOTGWA GUREUM trialed up well and is the wildcard with a light weight and a great draw.

Seoul Race 5: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Small field here and while (2) ROYAL ELVIS is up in class here, he comes down a whopping 7kg in the weights. He has placed in all four of his last starts, all at 1400M, winning one of them and with the draw ideal to get on pace and Kim Yong-geun climbing aboard, everything looks to be in his favour here. (1) MUNHAK MOON is the main danger. He won over this distance at class 4 level two starts back before running 4th on his first try at class 3 on August 7th when he raced handy throughout. Both were in good times. He too draws well and will be challenging from the start. (3) SHU LEUB drops back in trip from the staying ranks where she had been enjoying some success. While she runs on pace around two turns, she probably won’t be able to match the early speed of the afore-mentioned pair but has every chance of running into a place late on. (4) CHEMI BLUE remains a maiden but caught the eye last start when overcoming gate twelve to run a slashing 2nd and can be competitive again. (7) MEOTJIN WANGJA another with placing chances.

(2) DOCTOR FAPPIANO is a top-drawer filly who tried her luck at class 2 last start and came close to pulling off a remarkable win, beaten only by Winner’s Man and Curlin Time. In a normal season, she would have been hot favourite for the Korean Oaks but instead she finds herself in here, beautifully weighted and drawn. She has won at this distance already and she should win again. She’s not the only talented three-year-old here though. (5) ONNURI JILJU has never finished outside the top four and comes in off a fast win at this class over 1200M at the end of July. He comes up a full 4.5kg in the weights as a result and there will be question marks over the distance, but he can’t be ruled out. There are no such distance questions for (7) SEONGSAN POWER. He has the fastest time of any of these over the 1800M which he recorded when winning three starts back at class 4 level. Draw a line through his latest effort at a mile and he is in the hunt. (10) DOCTOR SKY and (11) GIJEOKUI JEOKTOMA are others with placing chances.

Seoul Race 6: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

After taking a couple of races to find her feet, (9) MIGHTY BOOM has been a model of consistency with a win and four placed finishes from her latest five. Her win came at 1400M, but she has the fastest time of any of these at this distance too and while she is up in weight she is back to restricted fillies and mares company and she can win. (6) NUNBUSIN HANSEN is a winner at this class and distance two starts back when making all and then last start ran 3rd with a decent effort from the outside gate in a small field of eight. Her consistency makes her a solid place chance here. (10) MJ POINT is a striking looking mare with four white feet, and she comes into calculations on her last start 4th when settled well back in the field and ran on resolutely. If there is speed on early, then she will be the one poised to take advantage. (3) BAEKSAN THUNDER is a mare who has shown ability and resumes here after sixteen weeks out following a terrific run over this distance on a wet track when she raced handy to the lead and ran on for a close 3rd. Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 4)

Seoul’s Saturday meeting will be run behind closed doors with 9 races from 11:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

The opener is for juvenile maidens and just two of the ten have raced before. (8) BYEOLUI SUNGAN raced well, running 3rd in a fast time over 1000M behind two who take their chance in tomorrow’s Rookie Stakes. He wasn’t the quickest away in that debut race but was taken across to the rail and ran on. He should have improved for the experience and can win here. There are a couple of dangerous first-time starters though. (1) CLAIR BEST ran well in his trial finishing a close 2nd when placed under very little pressure at all. There looks to be much more in the tank and he draws very well on the inside again. (10) WORLD FORCE was a touch awkwardly away but was quickly up with the pace and looked extremely competent in the home straight, running on without being asked a question to cross the line 1st. A win for either of those first-up would be no surprise. (5) LUCKY CROWN is the other one in the race with experience. She led on debut on August 7th before weakening to 6th but should have benefitted for the run. (3) DUSON FANTASTIC finished in 6th place in his trial but the margins were small and the time was fair and he is another with first-up claims.

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

Having absolutely bolted up in a trial in July, (8) CRAZY TANK was well supported on his return to action a couple of weeks later. While he did show at the front for much of the race he weakened late on and finished 5th, perhaps having left some of his spark in the heat. He comes in here after six weeks out, should be on pace again and can be given another chance. (4) GRAY CAT is first-up after five months out but shapes up as the best here with the fastest time of any of them at this distance and also a really good showing at 1300M too. He trialed up well in August running 3rd in his heat in a decent time and with an apprentice aboard, he is down 5kg in the weights from the last time we saw him. (3) TROT QUEEN ran well for 5th on debut over 1000M. She is nicely drawn to be on pace from the start again and should be in the finish. (9) LEGEND STAR doesn’t get the best of the draw but is another who likes to be on pace and has three 3rd place finishes to her name already. (1) YES I CAN another in the placing frame.

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

Tricky race but (6) GEOSEN POWER may be ready to win. He has the fastest time among these for the distance which he recorded at his latest start on August 15th when settling midfield and running on well. The same apprentice keeps the weight down and he has solid claims here. Four of these raced each other at this distance on July 25th coming home between 3rd and 7th but there was barely anything in it. In 4th place that day was (10) SEMYEONG HAETSAL, who is the only previous winner in the race. His victory came at this distance and he comes in off two consistent runs. His times aren’t great but he won’t need to do much more to be in the finish here. A nose ahead of him in 3rd place was (4) SIMON STORM, who was recording her best finish in her ten outings to date. She has tended to come from well back in her races but actually draws a decent gate here for once and can aim to place again. (2) CHOIN SPARK comes out of that same race and is another who can challenge, most likely from on pace. It isn’t a strong race so first-time starter (7) HANGANG MAGIC, who ran 3rd in her trial in a fair time, can’t be ruled out.

Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

Another tricky race with five of the twelve coming into this class for the first time. (7) JANGSAN GUARD is winless but up in class after three near-misses this preparation, all at this distance and all in competitive times. He comes down a little in the weights and draws well enough to suggest he can lead and he has as good a chance as any. (6) SMART DAEBO was a good winner two starts back at class 6 level over this distance and while he didn’t find it easy on his first try at this class on August 8th, can be given another chance here. (4) LONDON SPEED similarly had a hard time when not seeing out 1400M on her first try at this level on July 24th but should appreciate the drop back in trip and get an easier run from today’s gate. (11) SPRING KKUM finds himself down in class having made all nine appearances so far at class 4 level. His results on paper are unimpressive – hence why he final gets to drop – but against the better opposition he has run a fast time at this distance as well as consistently good times – faster than the average for this class – at 1400M. He has the steadier of 57kg on his back but don’t rule out a good run. (5) ISTHMUS another in the hunt but really, anything could win this.

She steps up to 1400M for the first time today but her running style suggests it may suit and she has every chance. From a good draw, expect her to be ridden closer to the pace than in recent outings. (10) K BLADE comes up in class after a maiden in at start number ten over 1300M on August 7th. She goes best on pace so the draw is not ideal but the distance should be ok and she can go close. (5) BIG RIVER has good experience at this class and has also registered a couple of decent times at the 1400M. She is tactically versatile but has the fastest start among these so should be on pace. (2) EUNHYE PADO too ran adequately on her first try at class 5 last time out. It’s been a while since she tackled this distance but she likes to run on strong and looks a placing chance at least. (9) ONE AND ONLY made all for a shock maiden win at this class over 1300M on August 7th. More respect is warranted this time but the extra 4.5kg and extra half furlong makes a repeat a challenging task.

Seoul Race 6: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

Absolutely super race with none of the field having finished any worse than 5th in their latest outing. (12) DAEHAN JILJU comes back in trip having notched his third consecutive win on July 18th. That was over 1800M and making it four in a row will be a very tough ask what with the double whammy of the widest gate and 58kg on his back. Two starts back he overcame similar in a fast time, albeit it at class 5 level and he can do so again. (8) WINNER QUARDRILLE returns to action for the first time since April. She trialed up very well last weekend and while this is a very stiff ask first-up, she has loads of ability and a nice light weight. (7) A. P. PATEK enters with two wins from his latest three starts, both at this distance and the most recent at this class in a fast time. He likes to sit handy and run on and while he comes up slightly in the weights, he has solid chances again. (5) EODIGANA comes up in class following an easy nine-length score at this distance in a fast time on August 8th. She was well beaten by Daehan Jilju two starts back but meets that one on even better terms this time and should be in the finish. Loads of others are competitive with (3) LUISA perhaps a decent each-way chance.

Seoul Race 7: Class 4 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

(1) ECHO VICTOR put in a disappointing performance on his latest appearance on June 27th when led until the 300M before quickly giving up ground and finishing well back. He was later found to have been slightly lame. He was favourite that day for good reason as he is a class and distance winner in a fast time and has been very consistent. He has recovered and has been back in work a month, an apprentice keeps the weight down and he draws the perfect gate to get to the lead. If it wasn’t for the apprentice booking, he would be carrying the same as (3) J.S. GUNJU, who is joint top-rated. He comes in off a solid 2nd place over 1200M on July 24th and has posted some good times at this distance too. (4) ROCK LINE also enters off a solid 2nd place in a fast time at 1300M last start. He comes up to the 1400M for the first time and should be in the hunt. (11) FINAL CANGINO had a poor day in the office at his latest start but gets tried at the distance for the first time and looks a placing hope. The wildcard is (6) MIGHTY KICK, who has done nothing in his two starts so far at 1200M, finishing well back but running on very strong both times. The added trip today should help.

(2) STAR BLADE comes up in class after landing his third win in eight starts when making all at this distance on June 13th. His is a tougher ask but he comes down slightly in the weights and draws very nicely. (11) WONDERFUL INDIAN was a very good winner at class and distance on August 7th when he settled handy behind the early pace before taking command in the home straight and running on for an easy victory. It was his first win in sixteen starts and he has the steadier of 57kg on his back today and a much less favourable draw but he has the ability to win again. (12) OKRYONG has beaten Wonderful Indian in the past and while he has an even worse draw, he looks nicely in with placing chances again. (8) MILKY SHERRY ran 4th to Wonderful Indian at her latest start and once more gets in under a featherweight and shouldn’t be too far away. (1) ROYAL HAMSEONG comes in off a good class and distance 4th place on August 15th, his equal best finish to date, and he too has placing claims.

Seoul Race 9: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

Absolutely super race to finish with a class 2 field that in a normal year we would probably only see come together in a Listed race. (4) SPEED GO is the winner of six from eight so far, including his latest four. He was most recently and all the way winner in a very fast time at this class and distance on August 7th. He gets clobbered with an additional 5kg for the that performance but he draws well again and can win again. (6) UNCLE OH has an even faster time at this distance. He led from barrier ten on a wet track last start on July 3rd ultimately finishing in 4th place behind a couple of today’s rivals but draws much better this time and should reverse the form on them. (5) ICE PUNCH comes up in class after two really good wins at 1200M and 1400M at class 3 level. He comes down in the weights, draws well and has solid chances. (12) BAREM was one of those who beat Uncle Oh in July when he was first-up following four months off. His draw is not so good but he has plenty of speed about him. (11) FINAL STAR is another who comes up in class following a good win last start and is yet another in at least the placing hunt.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 3)

We finally get some Stakes action in Korea this weekend as the juveniles at both Seoul and Busan get a chance to compete for a decent prize for the first time. In the meantime, the weekend’s action kicks off at Busan on a Friday with a short and sharp seven-race card running from 13:50 to 18:00. Unfortunately, all meetings in Korea this weekend will take place behind closed doors and there will be no legal local betting markets open. Here are the previews:

Busan

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

Juveniles to start with and eight of the twelve race for the very first time. (4) DOCTOR CAESAR put in an underwhelming trial in July but returned a couple of weeks late and looked extremely competent as he was held together well and ran on with minimal urging to cross the line significantly ahead of the rest and in a good time. He draws well here and can win on debut. (11) B. K. MARSHALL is one of the four with prior experience. He debuted on August 14th when he managed to quickly find the rail and run on well for 3rd place behind Again Touch. The draw isn’t so favourable today but he should have benefited from that experience and is a real chance. (9) MONGTTANG too should have come on for his debut when he finished in midfield in a fair time on July 16th. He may be looking for further but should improve second-up. (10) STELL LUNA and (12) MENIFEE SONG are among other debutants who trialed well and have money chances.

(4) GLORY KING did nothing on debut in January but was then put away for six months and having blitzed a June trial, ran a front-running 2nd on his return to racing on August 1st leading for much of the way before going down to the promising Doctor Texas in a good time. From a good gate, he will be on pace again and in a race of little form, he should be far too good. (1) MYEONGSEONG CHARGE trialed up in the same heat as Doctor Caesar (who was due to run in race 1). She was close to the pace throughout and while she was passed by a few late on, has every chance of going well on debut from a nice inside draw. (11) WIND HIGH debuted in that same race on August 1st and while unspectacular didn’t do a huge amount wrong. She had previously shown some speed in a trial and with natural improvement can get closer today. (12) DAEJI CHOICE is done no favours by the draw but hinted at ability with a 4th place over 1000M last start and can be in the mix here. (6) GREAT ELL comes down a full 4kg in the weights due to an apprentice up and can be given a chance.

(4) ADELE SUCCESS has been knocking on the door with a 3rd and a 2nd from her latest two outings, most recently when leading from the gate until the 200M over this distance on August 13th before ultimately going down to K Chukje. That’s two fast times in a row now, the weight remains light and she draws nicely with every chance of going one better this time. (7) MY DESTINY has a couple of decent runs to her name at this distance with a 2nd and a 3rd in competitive times. She weakened a little late on at her last start but can be given another chance here. (9) MANY CASH was a significantly improved 3rd at start number four last time out when she broke well, then settled back in the field before running on strong. She can build on that today. It took (1) MORE THAN SKY three goes to qualify but she looked well when finally doing it on July 30th, winning her heat in a fair time and nicely drawn on the inside, she can be a factor first-up. (2) UNBRIDLED QUEEN is first up and will need this but trialed adequately.

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

Super race. (11) SUCCESS MACHO is three from three so far and comes in off a fourteen-length demolition job at this distance at class 5 level on July 4th. He is up in class today and he has drawn wide but he has overcome the latter before and he can maintain his 100% record here. This should be a stern examination though. (7) DOMINATION is resuming for the first time since March when he got the most recent of a hat-trick of front-running wins. He trialed up very nicely two weeks ago, winning his heat in a fast time and draws nicely to steal a march on Success Macho and also meets him at favourable weights. He has a chance but it is his first try at the distance. (2) ROCK PEGASUS is a proven class and distance winner having beaten a couple of these on his way to a good score on August 1st when he settled in midfield and ran on well. He comes up in the weights today but should be competitive. (4) ACE SOLOMON comes up in class following a good win over 1200M. He is up in trip but down in the weights and can measure up in tough company. Plenty of others have at least placing chances with (10) MUJEOK BULPAE, who has run very consistent times, chief among them.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

A very competitive race and with an evenly matched field it may be that those who can get an easy run early have the best of it. With that in mind, we’ll side with (2) SEONGSAN HERO, who while still a maiden is proven at this distance with a solid 4th place last time out on August 20th when he beat a couple of these. He comes in at the same weight and from a great draw should be on the speed with every chance. On his inside is (1) BULMYEORUI GIL He ran 6th in that race on August 20th when he got well back and then ran on. He is up in weight but well drawn and has recorded solid times at this distance. (6) CHEONGDAM DRIVE is another who remains a maiden but has finished in the top four on seven of twelve occasions. He has run well at 1400M and over a mile and while he comes up in class, he is down in the weights and will likely be on the early pace here. (12) CENTUM THOR beat Cheongdam Drive as the pair ran 2nd and 3rd at a mile at class 6 level in July before running 4th over 1400M on his first try at class 5 on August 1st. He came from well off the pace that day and can potentially overcome the widest gate. (10) DUMUSAN, under a light weight and with the fastest time among any of these who have tackled the distance, is another one with placing claims.

Busan Race 6: Class 4 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

Another race of many chances. (4) SEUNGNI TOUT was a winner over a mile at class 5 level two starts back before proving he measures up at this class with a good 4th at today’s distance on July 4th. Seo Seung-un returns to the mount today and from a good draw, she has as much chance as any of coming home on top here. (1) GOLD FOUNTAIN is a real danger. A winner of three from six so far, he tackles 1800M for the first time but he has won over a mile and his racing style suggests two turns will suit. He comes up in the weights but looks to have more wins in him and it would be no surprise were he successful today. (9) ACE JACKPOT is a winner at 1800M at class 5 level and while he comes up in class looks sure to run the distance out/ The draw is not in his favour but he comes down in the weights. (3) TOP MATE is thoroughly consistent and enters off an excellent 2nd place at class and distance on August 13th when he beat a couple of today’s rivals. He carries even more weight today but is a tough competitor and can measure up again. The wildcard is (8) LUCKY BREAK, who is rapidly up in class. She has plenty of ability and a nice light weight although the draw is not in her favour and it is her first go at the distance.

(9) YEONGUNG LOUIS is a winner of three from five so far and was runner-up in the other two including last time when over 1400M he couldn’t quite match up to Heat Yegam. There was no disgrace in that at all as that horse went on to win again very easily last Friday and Yeongung Louis, despite the wide draw and the big weight, is favoured to return to the winner’s circle today. Drawing even wider is (11) AKER’S DREAM. He beat four of these when scoring at class and distance on July 31st and while up a full 3kg in the weights, should be going close again. (6) CHOEGANG SSONSAL had a poor day at the office last time out but has a couple of scorching performances to his name, including the fastest time of any of these at this distance and from a good central draw, can return to some form here. (12) ADELE SPIKE and (2) WONDERFUL PEACE are among others in the frame in a competitive finale.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (August 29)

We round out August with behind-closed-doors Sunday card at Seoul (9 races from 11:00 to 18:00) and at Busan (6 races from 11:30 to 16:30). Here are the previews:

Do Kki Blade goes in Seoul’s Sunday feature (Pic: KRA)

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

Two and three-year-old maidens open Sunday’s show and (9) YEONGWANGUI CAPTAIN was sent off as favourite on debut on August 7th on the back of some promising trials. From the inside gate he made it to the lead but ultimately ended up in 3rd place. He should have come on for that run and should be favourite to go two better this time. (7) LONDON POWER was a decent 3rd on debut over 1000M all the way back in February. She has only raced twice since then but has shown near the front on both occasions before weakening a touch late on. She’s had six weeks off since her last start and with just a bit of natural improvement she should be right in this. (4) NEW STAR YEONGCHEON was a touch disappointing when well backed on debut having won a trial. He draws much better today so should have to use up less energy getting to the front early and should improve. (12) WONDERFUL HAWAII showed improvement when 5th at the distance on June 26th. The wide draw shouldn’t affect her too much. (8) HWARYEOHAN MISO likewise finished off well on debut and can improve.

(7) UNJU EUTTEUM has a 3rd and a 2nd from two starts so far with the latter being at class and distance on August 1st when prominent throughout in a fast time on a day when races in general were being run quicker than usual given the dry track. The same apprentice keeps the weight nice and low, and he can go one better today. (11) SLIM QUEEN was slowly away on debut at 1200M on August 1st but made excellent ground to run 4th. The draw shouldn’t be a problem and the slight increase in trip may be a bonus. (6) CHEONGMA POWER improved at start number two, running on strongly for 4th and his running pattern indicates that he too may appreciate a bit more distance here. (8) SPEED MATCH and (1) BANJIUI GIJEOK are both first-up after layoffs of twenty and thirty-eight weeks respectively. Both had hinted at ability in the past and both looked well in recent trials with Speed Match slightly favoured to make a more immediate impact.

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Absolutely wide-open race with a number of the leading contenders stepping up to this trip for the first time. The only previous winner in the race is (3) K N LIGHT and he looks capable of winning again. His victory was all the way back in January, but he returned from three months off in July to run a good 4th at 1300M and from a good draw should go close here. (10) VIKING HEART has steadily improved across four starts so far. He comes in off a 2nd place on a very wet track over 1300M when for the first time he didn’t give too much ground away early. The draw may not be ideal, but he has claims. (5) SUPER BIRD looks like he needs some distance. He made good ground to get up to 3rd at his latest start over 1300M on July 25th and with a little less to do and an extra half-furlong to do it in, he surely goes close today. (11) NUBIGO and (4) PEPE RUN among many others with at least placing chances.

Three of these come up in class following last start maiden wins and all three should be able to measure up in this company. (9) SEUNGNI MAGICQUEEN had a near-miss on debut in April before getting it right at start number two on June 6th over 1200M when she overcame gate twelve to get on pace and then prove too strong in a fast time. The 1300M shouldn’t be a problem and while the draw is still less than optimal, she can win again. (4) MYEONGSEONG MAGIC pretty much made all to win at this distance on July 23rd. While it was at class 6 level, the time was more than good enough to mix it here and from a great draw, she should be on pace and has can go all the way. It took (2) DREAM DANCER nine goes to make her own breakthrough, which she did with an all the way score on July 31st in what is the fastest time recorded by any of these at the distance. It’s true there were a lot of fast ties that weekend but nevertheless, she warrants respect here and has a great draw to get on pace again. Among those with experience at this level, (8) JEONSEOLUI PUNCH has a decent record at the distance while (11) FANTASTIC LEADER could also improve.

Seoul Race 3: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

(1) SKY MANGCHI picks himself here. His win at class 6 came at this distance and he has solid class 5 for in two starts since with a 2nd and a 3rd at 1300M and 1400M and both in fast times. Last time out he led to the 200M and back in trip and with the inside gate to assist, he looks hard to beat. (10) STEAL THE FASHION is yet to win in six attempts but has finished runner-up on no fewer than four occasions, including his latest start, which was his first try at this level. He led that day and while the fate is not in his favour this time around, he has placing claims again. (5) THUNDER CHAMP comes up in class following an all the way victory over this distance on July 18th. His winning time very much measures up here and while he may not get such an easy lead this time, he draws well again and should be competitive. (8) FIGHTING DADDY resumes for the first time since May and along with (9) BYEOLBIT BOSEOK looks a placing chance.

She draws well again and while there is plenty of early speed here, she should be close to the pace again and every chance. (11) QUEEN OF THE QUEEN steps back in trip following recent efforts over 1400M, including back-to-back wins at class 6 level. The draw may not be ideal, but she looks nicely in here and can be competitive. (10) MAN OF THE WORLD is yet to win in seventeen attempts but has seven top three finishes and with an apprentice keeping his weight low, has claims on another place here. (9) HIT JACKPOT is up in class despite still being a maiden but his times at this distance measure up and he can be competitive. In a race with plenty of unknowns, several are first-up after some time away. (12) STORM TO WIN has won at this distance and trialed up very nicely.

(5) WONDER K has a solitary win from ten starts so far but it was at this class and distance in May, and he has since run well twice again. He was 2nd at his latest start when on pace and drifting out a little and he is the one to beat here. (12) JUNGCHUBUSA suffered her first defeat at start number three on July 24th when up in class and out to 1300M for the first time. She raced handy to the leaders but ran out of steam and finished 7th. It’s tempting to disregard that given that this looks a weaker race at a more suitable distance and despite the widest gate, she looks to have a real chance. (6) REMEMBER WHEN has placed at her latest two starts and is accordingly up in class today She comes down significantly in weight and should be able to measure up in this company. (1) WOL YEONG I is another with solid class 6 form and there was nothing wrong with her 6th place over 1300M on her first try at this level last start. Back to the 1200M and drawing the inside are both to her advantage. (11) LONDON ACTIVE has the fastest time of any of these at the distance and is better than her latest couple of outings suggest.

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

Fillies only here. It’s going to be a tough ask for (12) WORLD SOCKS with both the widest gate and with an additional 4.5kg on her back compared with when she won at class and distance on August 1st. Nevertheless, the Midshipman filly looks to still have improvement in her and if she can get to a prominent position early, then she has a chance. It took (9) WORLD REMEMBER nine goes to get her maiden win, but she evidently enjoyed it as she promptly followed up with another. They came over 1300M and 1400M so she drops back in trip today, but she is nicely weighted, and the draw shouldn’t be an issue. She can go close. There is one solitary debut-maker and it’s a promising one. (2) UNBONGSAN, like World Socks, comes up considerably in the weights following an all the way win on August 1st when she was headed a furlong out but rallied back to win well. She draws well to get to the front once more. Debut-maker (10) HIDDEN CHARLIE fairly bolted up in her trial, leading all the way and this looks a nice race to start out in. Speaking of trials, (5) YEONGGWANGUI TIME had a shocking day at the office at 1400M last start when she led early but capitulated to the extent she was forced back to trial. She won her requalification in a facile manner and has posted fast times at this distance in the past so is worth another chance here.

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 28)

There are 9 races at the behind closed doors meeting at Seoul on Saturday running from 11:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

A juvenile maiden to open with and six of the eleven race for the very first time. From a nice draw, (2) MENI GOLD is the pick. She was a little slow away in her trial but ran on pleasingly enough when hustled up the inside to cross the line in 3rd place in a fair time. The jockey booking suggests she is ready to win first-up. (7) DOUBLE EDGE was handy to the speed in his trial and responded very well when asked for an effort in the home straight, coasting the final half furlong and crossing the line in front. It was a good time and he too has solid claims on debut. In terms of experience, (9) GALSAEK HYANGGI ran on from an unpromising position on debut on August 7th, recorded a very good final furlong, albeit far too late to make an impact on the race. With a better start, she can improve today. So too (10) BROWN CHARM, who ran on but with too much to do and should also be better for the run. Neither draw especially well though. Returning to the first-timers, (6) P N S HER is another who could trialed competently and can be competitive.

More juvenile maidens, again with six of the eleven making their racecourse debuts. There is some positive experience on show though and we shall side with it. (9) RAON THE SPURT did nothing in her trial but ran strongly for 2nd place in a fast time on debut at this trip having led early. She is a “full” sister to Raon Tough Man, who won five of his ten starts, and while the draw is a little bit worse than last time, she can win. Also drawing worse is a horse she beat last time, (10) COMPLETE TIME. The Old Fashioned filly was sent off as favourite having won a trial in good order but didn’t quicken as well as hoped and ended up in 4th. She should have learned from that experience and should be worth another chance here. (3) GREENBACK was a trial winner who went on to run 5th on debut in a fast time on July 18th. She draws well here and should be looking to improve. Plenty of promise among the first-time starters as well. (8) MAGIC GRACE won her trial in fine order while (5) ORGALIM is sure to have plenty of backers first up too.

She has had nine weeks off since then but carries exactly the same weight and get a better draw. She has claims to back up. (7) FANCY PANTS may be yet to win after eight attempts but has never finished any worse than 5th. She was on pace for her latest 3rd place at this distance on July 24th and should be up there again today. (3) SHINE MUSIC is another who comes in with decent consistency and while she has finished no better than 3rd, she has a good time to her name at the trip, albeit on a wet track, and has lacing claims here. Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

(8) ACHIM GISANG suffered her first defeat at start number four on July 18th. It was, frankly, a tough ask for her that day as she was first-up following almost six months out; she was stepping up to this class for the first time and she was tackling 1400M for the first time. In the event she got to the lead and was looking well until the top of the straight before running out of petrol and finishing 4th. She should be better for that experience off a further six weeks out and dropping back in trip today to a distance at which she ran a super time in January, she is the one to beat. It won’t be easy though because (6) DREAM KNOCK is up in class following a super first-up win over 1200M on July 18th when she was wide throughout but ran on to win by eight-lengths. Her racing pattern suggests the step up in trip will suit and she looks a big danger here. (10) NONGBON BADA comes in having beaten three of these on her way to 3rd place at class and distance on July 24th when drawn even wider than she is today. She has a strong finish on her and will be poised to run home strong. (2) ELITE POWER is a winner at this distance in a fast time at class 6 level and while she had a poor day at the office last time, she draws much better here and can be competitive. (3) AFLEET MARINE among others in the placing frame.

Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

The ultra-consistent (1) TANK SOCKS looks ready to return to the winner’s circle here. In her latest two she has come from well off the pace to run 4th and 3rd, both at this class and distance and the inside gate should give options. She has a strong finish and with a little less to do late on today, can win. (6) TYCHE FIRE drops back in trip with his recent starts all having been over 1700M. He is top-rated in the race and has every chance of going close here. (4) BLACK CHARM was 5th behind Tyche Fire over 1700M two starts back but rebounded to run 2nd at the same distance at the end of May. He has had almost three months off since and is another who may appreciate the step back in trip here. So too may (3) DREAM MAX. Her style had been to come from well off the pace so it was no surprise when she was tried around two turns for her first two goes at this level. It didn’t really work out so she drops back to the distance at which she got her maiden win and she draws very nicely. (2) JILJU DAERO one of a number of others with at least placing hopes.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 27)

It’s behind closed doors once more with no betting available in Korea but Busan kicks off the weekend’s proceedings with a short 6-race card on Friday from 13:25 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Busan

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

Juveniles kick things off with eight of the twelve racing for the very first time. We’ll side with experience though and (8) DOCTOR PHAROAH ran well on debut on August 1st, when he broke from gate seven and was on pace throughout, ultimately finishing 3rd in a good time. With some natural improvement from that experience, he looks the one to beat. (5) BEOMI NAERYO ONDA went through a couple of trials and in the most recent of them he led early before finishing a competent 4th behind three experienced racehorses in a fair time. If he can bring that form to the races, then he will go close first up here. Among the other debut-makers, (4) FANTASTIC MAGIC and (6) PURPLE MANGO both did enough in their respective trials to suggest that they can be competitive first-up. (2) INDY CHOICE has hinted at ability across his two starts so far and draws much better today than he did last time when caught back and wide.

Selections(8) Doctor Pharoah (5) Beomi Naeryo Onda (4) Fantastic Magic (6) Purple Mango

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

A maiden but a good one. More than seven months separated the first two outings of (4) WORLD CHANGE but he did well in both, running 2nd on debut last December over 1200M before finally returning on July 23rd to be 3rd at the same distance. From a slow start he ran on pleasingly and should strip fitter for that run. The additional trip can suit and he has every chance. (9) YEONGGWANGUI SPEED comes in on a string of consistently good times at this distance. His racing pattern suggests the wide draw is no problem and he should be firmly in the finish here. (3) KING GRACE is another who is putting together a consistent record. He settled right at the back on his latest outing on August 1st, at this distance but ran on very well to finish 4th. If he can be a little handier earlier then he can go even closer. (6) GIANT CAL was a much improved 2nd over 1300M at his latest start when he was well back before running on strong. (11) LANE KILLER was an encouraging 3rd on debut over 1300M on August 1st and is another with claims to go close.

Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

A good race for the level. Four of these raced each other at class and distance on August 1st when (3) FLAT BABE was sent off as favourite but having settled to the rear of midfield, could only make it up to 3rd place on the line. She has demonstrated good consistency though as well as the ability to run fast times at the distance and with Perovic climbing aboard today, can be given another chance. (1) NEW LUX finished 2nd in that race, beating Flat Babe by just under a length. She too has run consistently good times for the distance and from the same draw as last time, will be a big danger again. (5) CAL MARK comes up in class after a good win at this distance class 6 level when he ran on strong from midfield to win going away. His winning time should measure up at this class and he has at least placing claims here. (4) GALLANT WARRIOR comes up in class too after emerging from the same race as Cal Mark where he was 2nd. He is yet to get his maiden win but has never been worse than 5th and has demonstrated plenty of speed and he comes down in the weights here. (12) TWO TWO FAIRY among a number of others with placing claims.

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

(2) GEOMEUN SSONSAL was a super class and distance winner on August 1st when stepped up to this trip for the first time. He settled in midfield before accelerating in the straight to score by three-lengths in a fast time. He does have to carry an additional 2kg today meaning he is giving significant weight to all of his rivals, but he should be equal to the task and can make it three wins in a row. (12) BABY LINE had a poor day at the office when sent off as favourite at class and distance on July 23rd, beginning poorly and then getting caught back and wide. He had previously won three in a row and while the draw is not great today, the apprentice keeps his weight down and if he gets a better start he will be worth another chance. (7) TOHAM STAR was just over three-lengths behind Geomeun Ssonsal when 3rd in that August 1st race at class and distance. He meets him with a full 6kg weight advantage this time and can potentially get closer. (3) DAEAM JANGGUN ran 6th in that same race on what was just his second appearance. He was on pace early but weakened a little late on and should have come on for that run. He can get closer here too. A last start class and distance 2nd, (11) TOP BEST is another with claims.

Busan Race 5: Class 4 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

(5) WILD INDIE is rapidly up in class following back to back wins over a mile at classes 6 and 5, both times having settled back and run on. He comes up in trip as well but is a half-brother to Beolmaui Kkum, who won a graded race at this distance and also to Kkakjaengi, who won a class 1 at this distance. He can continue his rapid progress today. (2) JEONGSU SIDAE is proven at the trip and comes in with his recent form reading consistently. From a good draw, he can settle handy and will have a strong challenge late on. (1) DOCTOR GIANTS comes up in trip following a couple of solid performances over 1400M at this level. His racing pattern suggests that can cope with the additional turn and he too draws very nicely indeed. It’s a similar story with (4) ADELE PUPIL, who ran 3rd on her first try at this level over 1400M last start. She has proven tactically versatile across her six outings to date, in which she has never been any worse than 5th, and under a very amenable weight, she looks firmly in the frame. (3) CHANGE BACK can mix his form but is proven at the class and the distance and is equal top-rated with genuine placing claims.

Busan Race 6: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(6) HEAT YEGAM is proving to be a serious horse. A winner of six from seven so far, he comes in off a scorching victory over 1400M on August 1st when he left highly thought of import Yeongung Louis trailing in his wake. He is up in class here but he comes down in the weights and while he drops back to the distance at which he suffered his only defeat to date, he can be on the pace here and win again. (1) BANJIUI YOJEONG comes in off a fine 2nd place at class and distance back on June 27th. True he was a long way behind the excellent (and now unfortunately long-term lame) Golden Winner but he has three of today’s rivals back down the track behind him. He is lightly weighted and draws exceptionally well and has solid claims to go close once again today. (2) TOP DAY races for the first time since finishing 5th behind Banjiui Yojeong back at the end of May when he overcame a very wide draw. He draws much better today and an apprentice is put up which takes plenty of weight off. (7) HIDDEN STAR and (11) OCEAN PHOENIX among other each-way chances.

Sunday Seoul & Busan: Race-By-Race Preview (August 22)

There has been a lot of rain across the peninsula so far this weekend so keep that in mind when handicapping the SUnday cards at Seoul (9 races from 11:00 to 18:00) and Busan (6 races from 11:30 to 16:30):

It was pretty bleak at Seoul on Saturday

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

Twelve juveniles here and all but one of them race for the very first time. That one went well on her debut to such an extent that (4) SPEED FALCON is the pick. She settled towards the back of a small field on debut on July 18th before running on well for 3rd place. Granted she was a long way behind a very good winner and never looked like getting 2nd either but there as a decent gap to 4th and she should have benefitted a lot from the experience. (8) DREAM SPEED took two trials to qualify and was greatly improved in the second of those when overcoming the widest gate to run on for a good 3rd. (1) THE REAPER was a close at hand 4th in his trial in a fair time and the inside gate puts him right in this first-up. (7) COMPLETE LUCKY essentially ran a different trial to his heat’s speed-merchant winner, but he went around competently and along with (5) GIANT KILLING is another place chance.

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

A maiden with very little in the way of convinving form and accordingly (2) MY DESTINY leaps out. She comes in off a 2nd and a 3rd place finish from her latest two outings, both of them at this distance and both times sitting handy and running on. She draws very nicely here and should have too much. (3) SAVE US showed close to the front for much of the way around at this distance on debut, ultimately finishing back in 7th among a field of twelve. She should have benefited from that experience and with some natural improvement can go close today. (1) HAEUNDAE BLUE can take advantage of the inside gate to get on the early speed and should be ready to make progress from her first two appearances while (9) TRIPLE JILJU too has registered a couple of promising performances and can aim to at least match his best to date finish of 4th. Apart from My Destiny, (8) ANY LINE is the only one in the field to have a top-three finish in his record and he drops back in trip and into the placing frame here.

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

A maiden where the talent doesn’t exactly leap off the page. Five race here for the first time. (2) RUBY STAR put in a good trial, settling in midfield and then ran on for 3rd without being asked for too much, ending in a fair time If she brings that form to the races, she has solid claims first-up. Of the experience, not a huge amount of it is positive although (9) PRINCESS DAY didn’t do a whole lot wrong on debut, albeit she only beat two home. It was certainly better than anything else here has produced and she won’t need to improve on it too much to be in the finish. (4) P N S HAENGBOK ran well in his second trial despite having plenty going against him from a wide draw. The jockey booking gives some cause for optimism. (8) M J DOLPUNG and (11) GIJEOGUI HIM are others with experience who may improve for their previous runs but really, most here will have to be taken on trust that they can get better.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here. (8) CHEONGMA HWANGHU comes in off a solid 2nd place over this distance on July 31st when she settled on pace and ran on well with no chance of getting to the winner but well clear of the 3rd place-getter. Her draw isn’t quite so good today but she has the fastest start of these and should be on pace again with every chance of going all the way. (3) HAMAN BANGEOSAN drew the widest gate on debut at 1200M on July 25th and proceeded to go ever wider once they opened and took a long time to find cover. He ran on pleasingly enough though and natural improvement from the experience along with a much better gate and an additional half-furlong make him an each-way prospect here. (1) RUN AND GUN made similarly good ground late on in the same race and she too should be running on strong at the business end. (4) IRON GIRL and (7) POWER WOLF dead-heated for 4th at 1200M on July 25th and are among others in at least the placing frame in what is a competitive race.

(8) RUN RUN RUN comes in after a significantly improved showing at star number four when he ran 2nd on what was his first try at this distance. He was away slowly but rattled home nicely and a similar run will see him go close here. (5) BEST FORCE comes in off the back of some good recent form at shorter distances, most recently sitting handy and then running on for 4th in a decent time over 1300M. She is drawn well so may look to be on or close to the pace here. (1) TINA comes up in trip after a much-improved 2nd over 1200M on July 10th when for the first time she was ridden to the front early. From the inside gate she can get forward again and could go close. (2) ADELE NARAE’s form reads well, especially his last start 5th at class and distance. However, he is first-up here after almost five months out and offered few clues in a trial on August 6th. (11) SOUTH BAN has registered a couple of good times at the distance and is another in the placing hunt.

Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

Fillies only here. (4) FIRST STAR was a good class and distance winner on July 25th, racing handy and then running on in a very similar all-filly race. The engagement of an apprentice jockey means that she meets some of her rivals from that day on even better terms and with another good draw, she can win again. First Star’s victory consigned (10) GOOD TANK to a first defeat, although the Officer filly went down by less than a length. She has led all three of her races so far so the draw is not ideal, but she remains a big threat and with a bit of improvement, can overturn the form. (11) MARK ACE has been a model of consistency with six top three finishes from ten starts. Last time at class and distance, she was handy to the lead and briefly touched the front before ending up in 2nd and she has at least placing claims again. (6) ECHO GOOD comes in off a solid 3rd place over 1300M last start. She can mix her form but looks nicely in here. Up in class but down in weight and well-drawn, (5) TAMNA HWANGHU is another in the placing frame.

Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

Three last start winners come up in class here while there are a whole host of horses with prior experience at this level who also have very solid claims. We’ll try to find some value and take a chance on apprentice Lim Da-bin and (2) ALCHAN NURI. He comes in off the back of two very good performances in quick times at this distance and coupled with the light weight and the great gate, he has a real chance. (6) FIGHTING NOW is top-rated off the back of his consistency which has seen him to six top-three finishes in ten starts, including back-to-back runner-up finishes in good times in wet tracks at this distance. He is yet to win though and does give weight away to everything else. (9) QUEENS TOUR is consistent and was a good class and distance 2nd last start having made all to win at class 6 level the time before. She may need a bit of luck from her gate but is a contender. Another contender and also drawn wide is (10) BEST TAP. He has the fastest time of any of these at the distance in his record and is another who enters in good form. (1) WONDERFUL DEVIL got a soft win last start and while she is up in class, she still has scope for a bit of natural improvement and from a nice draw, shapes as an each-way chance.

Another very competitive class 5. (12) MIRACLE SON beat three of these on his way to 2nd place at class and distance on July 25th when he was prominent throughout. His time on a dry track that day was faster than any of the others here have achieved at the distance. He gets a terrible draw but if he can overcome that then he can go one better today. (4) B J SONG was a winner at start number two over this distance on July 11th, pretty much making all. He comes up in class but with some natural improvement and from a good draw, he should be able to lead again and be in the finish. Joining him on the early speed should be (3) D’LOVELY QUEEN. She too comes up in class following a maiden victory last start and has every chance of measuring up. (7) WONDERFUL KING was a beaten favourite behind Miracle Son last start. Yet to win in twelve, he has a good placing record and is worth another chance here. (2) HIT THE ROAD among plenty of others with placing claims.

Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 20)

Saturday’s behind-closed-doors meeting at Seoul has 9 races from 11:00 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 45 Million

Juveniles here with only one of the eleven having previous racing experience. And unlike a lof these type of races, at least half of those first-timers showed enough in their respective trials to suggest they have the ability to win first-up here. We have to narrow it down though so we’ll go with one of two trial winners (1) ASPEN TAEYANG. He was very well held together in his trial, crossing the line first in an unhurried manner with seemingly plenty to spare. He draws well and the jockey/trainer combination is sure to attract plenty. (11) CHEONJIUI BIT ran 2nd in the same trial and was equally unhurried having led in the early stages. That won’t be so easy from the widest gate but she has potential. (8) JEONGSANG Z registered the fastest trial time. She looked a little ungainly in her heat but ran on strong without the whip. (10) MAGIC JUDE also looked to have lots in hand when 2nd in his trial after leading. (2) RAON THE DASH won his heat although he was asked a few questions, as was (7) GEUMSEONG SPEED. Experience can often count for a lot in these types of races and (4) CHEOLLICHONG did nothing too wrong when 6th on debut at this distance on July 25th. He draws much better today and can have come on for that run.

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Fillies (and one mare) only here. (7) LAPIEO BAN has run just the once, finishing 4th at 1200M on July 18th. She drew the widest but one gate that day and was slowly away before making good ground in the closing stages. She should have come on for that experience and the Strong Mandate filly draws better today with solid claims to break through. (5) WONDERFUL ORANGE has consistently run decent times at this distance and has a 2nd place to her name. She does have a tendency to be slowly away but can run on well and should be in the finish here. (6) LUCKY BALLY showed significant improvement when 4th ahead of Wonderful Orange at her latest start just two weeks ago. She draws better today and can build on that progress. (8) DAESEUNG GAON is another who goes back and runs on. She gets in under a featherweight here and has placing claims. The thirty-three race maiden (1) IRYEO HAYEO is wildly unpredictable but her performance two starts back when 2nd at this distance in fast time means she can’t be overlooked for the minor money.

(4) STELLA ROAD has finished no worse than 4th in three starts so far and steps up to this distance for the first time looking ready to win. Last time out she came from behind the pace to run 2nd well beaten by a good winner and she draws nicely here to be able to pick her spot. (6) MYEONGPUM HERO looks to be improving following a solid 3rd place over 1200M on July 17th when he was handy throughout and can build on that today while (2) GEUMSEONG MAN debuted in the same race and while very slowly away, once he finally got into top gear, he finished off very nicely and should be improving today. (10) SINDAERO had a poor day at the office last start but has shown ability at this distance and can be given another chance (7) LUCKY SEOKPO has had a real stop-start career but he does have ability and perhaps just needs to get some races under his belt. He returns for the first time since April today and should be leading early and is one of many who if they run to their best, can have a say in the finish.

Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

A very competitive race involving no fewer than four last start winners as well as plenty of other capable sorts. (5) RAON THE TIGER was a good winner over this distance at class 6 level two starts back before running 2nd at his latest effort at this class over 1200M. He draws well to get to the early lead and he could go all the way. (8) CHEONGDAM TANK got his maiden win at start number nine over 1700M on July 3rd. He has shown ability at this distance as well, is tactically versatile, and has every chance again. (7) SAENAE WIN comes up in class after a gate to wire victory at this distance at class 6 on July 4th. That win had been coming and while the fast time was aided by a wet track, she should be able to measure up in this company. (9) FASHIONED PASSION is a winner at this class and came home a good 3rd behind Raon The Tiger at her latest start. She has a strong finish on her and will be working home late here. (2) CHEONJI POKPUNG was a massive longshot last time out and appeared from absolutely nowhere to run from last to 1st in the home straight on July 17th. He comes up in the weights but warrants more respect here.

Seoul Race 5: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

Another very competitive race for the level, this time with three last start winners, although all three are up in class. (5) BULBANGUL didn’t exactly set the world alight when winning at this distance on debut on July 11th. On a wet track, he settled towards the back and then ran on strongly in the home straight to score. He should have improved for that run and while he may need to be a bit handier earlier, he has claims to measure up against this tougher opposition. (6) VICEROY has the fastest time at the distance, recorded on a wet track when he led from gate to wire to win at class 6 level in May. He has since put in two creditable runs at this level and should be in the mix again. (1) WINNER BLUE too has good experience at this level and while he comes up in the weights here, he has placing claims. (8) ICE STAR comes up in class after two wins from his latest three. He seems to be a bit of an all or nothing type as those two victories are his only top five finishes, but he comes in off a light weight and could be involved. (9) CHEONDUNGSEJA another up in class who can be competitive.

(9) COBRA BALL was a smart winner at this distance two starts back when resuming after five months off and then ran a very good 2nd place at this class beating a couple of these in the progress when he led until the furlong pole. He stays down in the weights here and while the draw isn’t the best, he has won from wider and has solid claims. (10) DALRINEUN BITKKAL came from off the pace to win at class and distance in a fast time on a wet track on July 10th. He came from a wider gate than he has today so the draw should be no problem but he does come up a full 4kg in the weights. He has a real chance. So too does (5) DONGJIN CHOEGANG. A winner of three from five so far, he is up in class having made all over this distance in a good time on July 17th and he should be more than competitive at this level. Plenty of others with placing claims including (2) CHOEGO CAMP from a nice draw, and (11) MONEY CHAMP, a class and distance 4th last time.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 20)

For the time being racing will continue as scheduled for prize-money only with all betting outlets now closed in Korea due to the latest round of Covid restrictions. That situation is likely to be reviewed in September although few are optimistic about the government allowing reopening this year. With all three tracks back from their summer break, this weekend sees a normal schedule. There is a 6-race card at Busan on Friday from 13:25 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Busan in better times

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 33 Million

Three-year-olds and one juvenile and a very interesting match-up it is too pitting a couple of promising debut-makers against some experienced horses who look ready to win. We’ll take a chance on the debut-maker (2) DROMUS though. The Dominus filly was imported in-utero last year and wasn’t ready when trialed all the way back last December. She re-appeared in a heat on July 24th and led all the way while held together very nicely, looking to have a good six or seven-lengths up her sleeve. If she brings that form to the races, she can win. (11) GLORY SONG scores well on all indicators. Last start she had the same gate as today and was wide for most of the way around running on well enough for 4th. She can go close today. (1) KING GOLIATH drops back in trip after encouraging runs at 1400M and 1300M. Crucially he finally draws a decent gate as well and he is another with winning chances here. The one juvenile is (8) B. K. HANA and she trialed up pleasingly, leading early and then running on well under urging to finish up alongside some talented experienced racehorses. She too should be in the finish. (3) CARIBBEAN DAY another with placing chances.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(4) UNJU SESANG has two runner-up finishes and a 4th from three starts to date. Last time out at this distance on June 5th, she sat handy and ran on well to almost catch the winner, only going down by a nose. A similar run here from a good draw may make her hard to beat. Jockey Park Jae-I is in a bit of a purple patch at the moment and he actually ride Unju Sesang to that 2nd place last time. Today he partners (5) NICE WORLD, who may end up the main rival. She has raced just once, when 4th over 1200M back in April when she overcame gate fourteen to run on well. She looked well when trialing up again just last week and so long as she didn’t leave her race on the track then, she should go well here. (9) SINJIN GANGHO is a hold up horse who while he does leave himself too much to do, has the best finish of any of these and will be coming on strong in the closing stages. (6) BLUE OAK is yet to win in sixteen attempts but her recent form is her best and she finished alongside Sinjin Gangho last time. She has a better draw today and can aim to place. (1) FIRST WIND is the only previous winner in the field and is another with placing hopes.

Busan Race 3: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

(5) GOLD FOUNTAIN has won his latest three, one at a mile and two at today’s distance, to be rapidly promoted up to this class. He has won from handy and from the back of the field and he comes down significantly in weigh here with every chance of making it four in a row. (9) KINGS LANDING comes in off a very strong 2nd place at class and distance on August 1st when she sat handy and ran on. While she didn’t get close to a good winner, the time she recorded was faster than any of her rivals here have over the distance and is a contender here. So too is (8) BABEL DREAMER. He came from a handy position to get his maiden win at start number six over class and distance on July 16th and while he does come up in the weights, he has every chance of going close again. (4) SUNLIGHT BOY has won at this distance at class 5 level and has been very consistent across three subsequent class and distance. He continues to get in under very light weights and will be competitive again here. (6) B.K. LOOKS was a winner at this class over 1200M last start and has previously run well at this trip too. With an apprentice keeping the weight down, he is another in the frame.

Busan Race 4: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 45 Million

Good little race this and plenty have winning chances. (5) ACE DAY was a very nice class and distance winner on July 17th, making all to score by as many as he pleased. He does come up in the weights today but that is mitigated a little by him drawing a much better gate and he can win again. It’s the opposite case for (11) SECOND WIND who gets a much worse draw than when she won on August 1st but she does come down 3kg. That’s because she is up in class today but while that race was an all-filly affair, he winning time was the same as that of Ace Day and she should measure up here. (9) RAON THE POWER is a winner of three from seven so far and is sure to be a danger. He comes in off a good 2nd at class and distance and is likely to sit on pace or handy today. Also on pace will be (6) DOCTOR FASHION. He drops back in trip after running 3rd over 1400M on July 16th but he is a class and distance winner as recently as May and warrants respect today. (12) BURNING FLY came home 3rd behind Ace Day last time out and while she draws the car park here, shouldn’t be completely ruled out of another place.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 33 Million

(9) RAON THE CAPTAIN steps up in class and in distance following back to back class 6 scores over a mile and 1400M, both times getting to handy positions from wide draws before winning easily. There is no reason why he can’t be competitive here and a hat-trick of wins looks very much on the cards. Having won at a mile at class 6 level, (1) SEUNGNI GLORY was sent off as favourite for his first try at class and distance on July 9th. He ended up coming home 4th – beaten by three of today’s rivals – having sat midfield and then not kicked on perhaps as much as expected. Nevertheless, he should have learned from the experience and can go close again today. (6) ACE JACKPOT was the somewhat unexpected winner of that July 9th race. Unlike in previous recent outings, he got off to a very good start that day and while he does come up in the weights, he warrants a little more respect this time around. (10) CRYSTAL THINKING is up in class following a gritty win over a mile last month and can be competitive too while (11) GEUMA GOOD POINT has solid experience at this class and tries the distance for the first time. He is one of a number with placing claims.

Busan Race 6: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Good race to finish and (6) MR. VALOR is a winner of three from his latest four with his last two races both being class and distance victories, both times sitting handy and proving too strong late on. He draws well and what would have been a significant weight increase is mitigated a little by a good apprentice taking the mount. He can complete his hat-trick here. (10) GEUMA STORMING is still relatively unexposed with two wins from three and he steps up in class and in distance after a strong all the way win over a mile on July 31st. The start before he won at this distance and down in the weights today, he has solid claims to complete a hat-trick of his own. (4) POKPUNG EONDEOK came from well off the pace to score in a fast time over a mile at class 4 level last start and is another who can measure up at this class and distance. (9) FREEDOM KNIGHT and (7) FANTASTIC MAN among others in at least the placing frame.
