The recent uptick in Covid-19 cases in Korea has ended any prospect of punters returning to racecourses for the forseeable future and if the situation doesn’t stabilise soon, is likely to see racing forced back on an extended break. For now though things continue behind closed doors and with no legal betting in Korea. It’s a big weekend of action with the SROA Trophy and Ttukseom Cup at Seoul on Sunday but before that things get underway with a 15-race Friday card at Busan from 11.30 to 18.00. Here are the previews:
Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
Juvenile maidens kick off the card with six of the eleven racing for the very first time. We’ll go with experience though and (2) GOOD SOCKS showed potential when 3rd on debut on July 24th. The filly is well drawn to get to the front here and the additional furlong shouldn’t be an issue. (1) YEONGGWANGUICHUKJE ran 5th in that race. He is the only entrant to have raced twice prior to today and having run on well both times at 1000M, looks like he could benefit from the increased trip today. (4) ALPHA AGAIN led on debut and while he weakened late on, he should have come on for the run and can improve on the 4th place he secured. Among the first-timers, (10) PYEONGHWA SIDAE looked well when 3rd in a trial last month and can go well first up here with a top jockey on board.

The Korean-bred maiden gallopers line up in the second where there is limited early speed engaged. (6) WISE GIRL looks a promising type after finishing second on debut. The filly rattled off a solid sectional after settling well back in the run. If Jo In-kwen can settle her closer from barrier six she looks a good chance of breaking through. (5) SUN ALPHA looks an each-way chance from a good draw. The Thunder Moccasin colt should be able to settle closer in the run. Two starts ago the three-year-old finished third behind Wind Park which reads well for this assignment. (3) CHEONMA HASEO is another that looks capable of figuring. The chestnut has had the three starts with a career best fourth to date, which came at his most recent start. (7) GABO TODAY looks next best but times he has clocked to date have been slow.
Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
(1) HAPPY SONG looked ready to win with a solid 3rd place on the weekend of the shutdown in February over this distance. Aside from an April trial which offered few clues, she’s not been seen since but if she can pick up today from where she left off, she has to be considered a real chance here. (6) HAMAN HAPGANGJEONG has shown improvement over three starts so far, culminating in a 4th place last time out at this distance. She tends to take an age to get going but in this company she won’t need to improve very much to go close. Both (2) BAEDARI SUNSHINE and
There are 15 races at Seoul on Saturday from 10:45 to 18:00. Unfortunately the meeting must be held behind closed doors. One thing to note is it has been raining hard in Seoul all night and there is no let up forecast all day:
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
A valuable juvenile maiden kicks off the card with five of the eleven runners having raced before. Of those, (8) GREEN POKJU was the best, finishing 2nd of 12 at this distance on a good track in a creditable if unspectacular time. He jumped awkwardly that day, meaning he had to come from off the pace and if he gets a better start, has every chance of going close. (6) GREEN JJANG and (9) CHEONMA TODAY also put in decent efforts on their respective debuts and can be considered for improvement, but there are several first-time starters who have claims. (1) GRAY CAT was the best in trials, making all to win his heat in a good time on a wet track. Having drawn the inside again, he can get to the front from the start and looks very much in the hunt. Similarly, both (4) MYEONGJIN CANDY and (5) LUCKY JAESAN made all to win their respective heats and shouldn’t eb too far away.
Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The two and three-year-old gallopers line up in the second where there looks to be a host of potential pacemakers. One of those pacemakers is (10) WINNER QUARDRILLE who lines up for her second career start. She debuted late June where running a fair time for the six furlongs, finishing fifth behind Whiz Moment. With some natural improvement at her second start she can go close. Moon Se-young sticks with her which is a good sign. (3) NONGBON RAK is third-up after a good performance to finish second behind Never Walk Alone last start. If she gets away cleanly she can sit on speed and have every chance of winning come the top of the straight. (9) ONLY WINNER trialed up nicely when not fully exerted underneath Kim Jeong-jun. The filly coasted through the line and looked to have plenty more to give. (6) RAON SPECIAL looks next best after clocking a good time when fourth behind Good Vow last time out. She is one of the likely closers with a chance engaged in the race.

Two and three-year-old maidens line up here. (4) GANA PARK has raced twice do far, finishing 3rd and 2nd, the latter at this distance. For the first time she’s drawn a good gate and with Moon Se Young taking over in the saddle, she looks hard to beat here. (11) LUCKY SEOKPO returns to action for the first time since the shutdown. He has a 2nd place finish to his name at this distance on debut in January and looked when posting a fast time on a dry track in a June trial. (3) PRIME SUMMIT has registered decent times in both her starts at 1000M so far and steps up in trip for the first time here. It may suit and she may well aim to lead under Lee Hyeok. (1) OKCHUMA and (9) GEUMA COLOSSAL are among others who have hinted at ability and may improve today.

The Korean-bred fillies go around in the fourth where we blackbooked one last time out. (2) LOVE WITH ME was the horse we suggested following, after a gutsy performance over 1300m last time out when second behind Cheonji Yeogeol. She was headed in the run home before fighting back, it was a fast finishing type that nabbed her in the end. With gate two she can kick up and a similar effort will see her go close. (1) BLACK SILVER is drawn well also and likewise has early speed. The Tout filly will be stretched beyond 1000m for the first time. She went down three lengths behind Good Vow last time out when unable to reel the leader in. (4) POWER MUSIC improved second-up last start to finish third behind Old Blade. The Winchester filly is capable of camping behind the speed and showing a turn of foot late. (6) SYDNEY MONEY is second up after finishing fifth behind Top Seed last time out. The filly is capable of placing over these sprint distances as seen in previous preparations.

(5) TERRA SPEED comes in off a solid first-up 4th place over 1300M a month ago. He drops back to this trip for the first time and from a good draw should be prominent early and has as much chance as any of winning this. Joining him on speed early should be (3) WINDY RUSH. She led on debut at this distance on July 12th only to weaken a little late on. She should have come on for that experience and can play a role here. (1) HURRICANE SOCKS and (9) GABO SARANGHAE both showed development in their respective latest starts, both coming home in 4th place. The former steps up to this trip for the first time and it may well suit. (11) BOBBY BLADE has been a touch one-paced in her three starts so far but hasn’t been too far away in her latest couple and can challenge for the minors here.
Race 6: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
Eleven maidens line up in the sixth event where there is no standout. In a race that lacks in-form gallopers, (6) SPECIAL STORY is the on top selection after finishing third when resuming. The Afleet Again filly appears to have appreciated the enforced break, showing us that she can run through the line strong over the six furlongs last time out. (3) SEOUL CROWN looks an each way chance based on the strength of his most recent run. The One Cool Cat colt failed to run on last start when settling for fifth. With a run under his belt he can finish closer today. (7) GO AHEAD will be stretched out to the six furlongs at her second start. She clocked a reasonable time on debut when running through the line one-paced. She is likely to be given time to find her feet by Kim Ok-sung before asking her to improve from the 600m pole. Really competitive filly and mare race for the level. (11) BAEKSAN THUNDER may still be a maiden but she beat three of these on her way to a close runner-up finish over 1300M on July 19th. The draw is not ideal but she should be able to sit outside the early speed and finish strong to go close again. (4) DREAM GIRLS was a good maiden winner on what was her fourth outing on July 5th. The win had been coming and she did it well from the front over this distance. She is up in class today but nicely drawn to lead again and two in a row is a distinct possibility although she must avoid shifting outwards in the closing stages like she did last time. Also up in class after a maiden win is (8) RAPIDO ARES. In her case it came at just the second time of asking as was a similarly front-running performance at this trip. There is no reason why she can’t be competitive at this level. (9) CHEONEUN JJANG was 4th behind Baeksan Thunder last start and can aim to match that here.
A field of eleven line up in the eighth event where the majority of them are well tried. (9) WONDERFUL STORM is a less experienced type who lines up for his third career start. He won on debut when we he resumed late June and then last start finished midfield when being tried over the 1300m. He is capable of improving once again, his time last start was good enough to consider him a winning chance in this event. (10) SUPER LUCKY BOY was a surprise winner last start when leading all the way for Lee Hyeok. He was disappointing on debut but rebounded in great fashion. There is a query with the 1300m but we expect him to get better as he goes deeper into his racing career. (6) DAEGUN OK broke through for her first win last start at attempt fourteen. She has consistently finished in the first five and can do so once again here. (7) PRIMA NIKE looks best of the rest after showing some improvement last start.

Imported maidens here with only three of them having troubled the placings board so far. The standout of those looks to be (5) FULL BOOSTER, who comes in having run 3rd at the distance on July 18th. That was his first up run and while he was previously good on debut before going astray a little in two further starts prior to the shutdown, this time he can maintain his momentum. (2) SUN BOOM hasn’t shown much in the way of speed but it’s been enough to see him to a 3rd and a 4th place finish in two starts back and he too can maintain that positive run of form today. (3) JANGSAN MONSTER ran well on debut all the way back in December last year before running poorly second-up in January. He’s not raced since but performed promisingly in a trial only last week and should be in the hunt in this company. The We Miss Artie colt finished fourth behind Looking First where the margin was just over three lengths. Moon Se-young will jump aboard and be aided by a good gate. (3) DAEGUNUI GEOM has placed on four occasions from eight starts and is still looking for that elusive win. The Majestic Warrior colt looks well placed in this event, if he can overcome the 57.5kg on his back he is a big chance. (7) SONGAM TIZ is the one Korean-bred galloper engaged and has started his career with a bang. The Tiz Wonderful colt has won two of his three starts including a win when resuming last time out over the 1200m. This will be his toughest test to date but he looks well placed in the event. (1) JILJUUI KKUM strolled through the minor classes prior to the shutdown and returned to run a strong 2nd to the talented Looking Good on what was his first crack at class 4 on June 21st over 1400M. A half-sister to sprint star Doraonpogyeongseon, the drop back in trip should hardly be a problem and she looks bound for the higher levels. Under a nice light weight again today, she should win. (10) FIRENZE HILL was a front-running 2nd at class and distance on July 11th. He doesn’t win out of turn but that was a nice uptick in form and suggests the hiatus may have done him some good. It’s also possible the enforced break has benefitted (9) STRONG VULTURE. He seemingly completely lost his way prior to this shutdown but does have plenty of ability and trialed well a couple of months back. He’s the wildcard here. The Class Four gallopers line up in the twelfth over 1400m where we think there is one of the better bets on the card. (7) SARYEONI WINNER is yet to break maiden status but has been good in her four career starts to date. The filly was placed in a trophy race upon resuming and performed fairly when finishing midfield behind Geosen Jilju. Back into restricted grade she should be able to notch her first win. As always when Moon Se-young is legged aboard, it’s a good sign. (2) AMIGO RARO resumed in good style to finish second behind Yori Jori early July. The Summer Front colt will step up to the 1400m at his second start back where he has previously placed. He looks one of the likely pacemakers engaged. (4) GOLD BLUE MAGIC is another potential pacemaker after sitting handy to the speed last start when finishing fourth behind Echo Bill. She will drop back to the 1400m for the first time this preparation. (9) WIND SKY looks next best coming off a last start third behind Complete Kingdom over 1700m. He is another that will drop back in distance.
Race 13: Class 4 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(1) JEONGMUN SAI beat a couple of these when coming from well off the pace to win at this class over 1800M on June 28th. It was one of the slowest times you’ll see for a race at that distance but he won handsomely enough and while he is conceding significant weight to the rest of the field, another win isn’t impossible. (9) FIORE ran out a somewhat unexpected class and distance winner in early July and then returned later in the month to miss the start but still run on for 3rd over 1400M. She remains nicely weighted and her good form can continue. The big danger though could be (6) NANGMAN STAR. He’s only won once from thirty-seven starts but ran very nice race for 3rd at class and distance on July 12th in a useful time. Moon Se Young takes over aboard today and he looks very nicely in here. Moon Se-young will jump aboard the Menifee gelding for the first time and is likely to push him along early from the wide gate. He has shown some good performan ces over the middle distances previously including a Class Three win over 1600m last preparation. (3) GOLD HAMMER looks next best but will face stiffer competition as he lines up in Class Two company for the first time. The entire comes off a third behind Mighty Go over 1200m last time out. He has been tried over the two turns on multiple occasions and performed well. (1) DORAON NALRI is another that will line up in this class for the first time. He placed second when resuming mid-July and will be stretched out to the two turns second-up. (6) SEOUL TANK looks capable of running into some minor money. Additionally, he will need to carry an extra 4kg today, but he remains a winning chance. (1) JANGSAN FLY ran a good 2nd also at 1200M on July 18th. He is by no means a prolific winner, but he carries less weight today and has strong claims. (7) BEST LUCKY drops back in trip after an all the way win over 1700M a month ago and is another one who comes in nicely in the weights. (3) DAE BYEONHWA is a regular place-getter at this level and indeed has clocked the fastest time of any of these at this distance. This Sunday sees the Busan Mayor’s Cup, the final leg of the Stayers’ Series where Cheongdam Dokki will once again seek to see off the likes of Tiz Plan and Shamrocker to take a clean sweep off all three legs having already won the Herald Business and YTN Cups. Before that though there is a big 15-race card at Busan on Friday running from 11:30 to 18:00. Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
Two-year-old gallopers kick of proceedings on Friday with six of the eleven engaged previously raced. (3) GALLANT WARRIOR is the on top selection in a race with many chances. The Old Fashioned colt has performed well at his two starts to date, coming off a last start fourth behind a handy type named Doctor Fashion. (7) CLEAN HIT trialed up nicely in his heat, when only having to be asked for in the last half furlong. He clocked a good time considering there was minimal urging from Lyu Gwang-hee. Busan’s leading rider You Hyun-myung will ride the colt on debut. (4) LUCAS SUN lines up for his second start after finishing midfield on debut behind World Cheonsa. The Purge colt was beaten a big margin, but his time was good and the winner looks an above average type. The second is an all-aged maiden for the Korean-bred gallopers where a field of ten will start over six furlongs. With very little speed engaged in the event it looks a good opportunity for (4) RAPTOR MAN to break through under new apprentice Mo Junho. The Rock Hard Ten gelding brought up his first placing last time out, when second behind Pai Blade. He looks one that appreciated the enforced break, he should be able to jump and run from gate four and prove hard to beat. (5) POWERFUL LEGEND looks capable of running into the money after finishing third last time out over this distance. The three-year-old gives the indication he is backmarker so don’t expect him to be settling in the first couple. (6) RAPIDO QUEEN will debut in the race. The Sadamu Patek filly clocked a fair time in her trial, many of these have shown limited ability suggesting she can figure at her first start. (10) HUIMANG SOYEO looks next best as she lines up for her first-up run. She trialed up well and has previously placed in similar company.
Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
Another all-aged maiden for the Korean-bred gallopers here with a field of eleven engaged. In a race lacking depth, (9) DOCTOR KHAN goes on top after finishing third last start over this distance behind Nice One. The Menifee gelding was beaten ten lengths on that occasion but this is a much easier assignment. There should be some natural improvement with this start being his third career run. (6) SPRING FIRE is another that was beaten by a big margin when placing in an age-restricted race last time out. The Lion Santa filly finished third but clocked a time that will see her competitive against a field of this caliber. (2) MYEONGGA DAERO looks capable of running into a place with a good draw. The four-year-old has had eighteen starts, yielding just one place. He comes off a last start fourth when clocking a fair time behind Kkumeul Neomeo. The Tiz Wonderful filly could only manage fifth, when one-paced in the run to the line never looking a winning chance. (7) QUEEN VRONSKY has notched two placings from as many starts including a last start second behind Top Lucky. The filly has the ability to close over a sprint distance, the additional half furlong should be in her favour. (3) SATURDAY QUEEN went down a head last time out when second behind Blue Ember. Juvenile maidens to kick off Friday’s card with seven of the eleven having raced once before. Four of them debuted in the same race over this distance on July 17th and it was (3) B.K. LOOKS who ran out the best of them, finishing in 2nd place. He had led early before being left behind by a very nice looking winner, Winner’s Man, and showed enough to suggest he has a win in him sooner rather than later. Of the others who went that day, (2) BAEK PUNG in 6th ran reasonably well and has the potential to improve here. (1) NAMED came from off the pace on her debut on June 26th to run on well for 5th place and can build on that today. Among the three first-time starters, (5) MACH TITAN looks the pick. The Hansen colt made all to comfortably win a trial under minimal urging three weeks ago. If he brings that form to the racetrack and then gets a lead again, he will be hard to beat. (6) STEADY WINNER is a half-sister to the very good Mask and warrants a close look on debut here.
Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
It looks as if Djordje Perovic can have another good weekend after taking out the Korean Derby last week aboard Save The World in Seoul. The Serbian hoop will ride (9) HUIMANGUI SORY in the second where the horse comes off a good performance, when finishing second behind Doctor Fashion. The times he has clocked over the five furlongs have been brilliant, the extra furlong looks to suit him and at set weights the two-year-old looks one of the better bets on the card. (11) ACEUI GIPPEUM was good on debut when placing in a similar event. The Ecton Park filly produced one of the faster sectionals you will see for a debutant, suggesting she will appreciate the step-up to the 1200m. (1) TOP OF KOREA debuts after some handy trial performances. He needs to be respected as there looked to be more in the tank after producing some handy trials. Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
The Korean-bred maiden gallopers line up in the fourth where they will tackle the 1300m. (9) CHOEGANG HUNTER looks toughest to beat on paper coming off a first-up second placing behind Mr. Fusion. The extra half furlong should be advantageous for the colt after hitting the line in good style. Jo In-kwen stays aboard after having a good time of it last weekend. (2) MINYEO GEOMGAEK placed on resumption as well, with the filly being put over the 1400m first up. She sat on speed last time out, something we haven’t seen from her previously. If Choi Si-dae elects to work forward again he can do so from a good draw. (6) EAGLE STAR is another speedy type who finished second last start. The gelding performed better than most expected when returning to the track last start. Djordje Perovic will be legged aboard, who holds a very good strike rate since his return to Korea. (7) WONDERFUL SMARTY looks next best after finishing fourth behind Top Lucky last time out.
Race 5: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
(1) CHEONGDAM DRIVE has shown improvement across three starts to date, culminating in a 3rd place over 1300M last start a month ago. He steps up slightly in trip today and that, along with the presence of Djordje Perovic aboard, may be just what it takes for him to make the breakthrough. Of those who have tackled this distance before, (6) PILSEUNG IJI has recorded the fastest time. She goes around for the fourth time since resumption with two 3rd place finishes and a fourth from her three cracks so far and should be there or thereabouts again. (11) DOCTOR MAX was beaten by Pilseung Iji two starts back but comes in here having run 3rd at this distance on July 17th. She was given a forward ride that day and while today’s draw does her no favours, she should be in the hunt for at least another place. (2) GRAND CAPTIAN and (5) GOLD MAGIC are others with potential for improvement.

Race 6: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
The sixth is a tough event for punters to dissect with numerous winning chances. (4) SUSO TANK is the on top selection after finishing second over this distance last time out behind Blue Signal. The fact we know she can run a strong mile out is a plus, with plenty of these runners being tested over it for the first time today. The Tiz Wonderful filly has had three runs this time in suggesting she will be rock hard fit for her assignment. (7) JEONSEOULUI FIGHT is third-up and comes off multiple placings since resuming. The Colors Flying colt looks as if he will appreciate the mile this time around, as he has been given plenty of time to find
There are 15 races at Seoul on Saturday from 10.45 to 18.00. Most of the top jockeys including Moon Se Young, Park Tae Jong, Kim Yong Geun and Alan Munro are absent as they are in Busan for Sunday’s Busan Ilbo Cup, but there is still plenty to get stuck into. Here are the previews:
This weekend’s meetings are sadly behind closed doors again
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
A field of twelve three-year-olds will kick Saturday’s monster card off with eleven of them on debut. (8) LEROY BLANC is the on top selection after some handy trial performances. The Forest Camp filly has been ridden by Ha Jung-hun in her trials, and will partner her on debut. She was ridden with minimal urging in her heat and clocked a good time for the debutants. (4) HAEK SOCKS produced a fair trial and is considered an each-way chance on debut. The Hansen colt was given a soft trial qualifying with ease. He should position near the speed with a good draw. (9) ROSEDAY MARINE was well beaten in her trial but managed to produce a reasonable time. (3) DEKABRIST is next best after finishing fourth in her trial when clocking a fair time on a wet surface.
Selections (8) Leroy Blanc (4) Haek Socks (9) Roseday Marine (3) Dekabrist Next Best 11, 7 Fast Start 4, 8
Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
Twelve unraced two-year-olds go around here No eagerly awaited debuts here but we do at least have some trials to go on. (6) YEONGGWANGUI MISO looked the best of them with the Hansen filly finishing well ahead of a couple of her rivals here in a reasonably well run heat at the end of May. One of those was (9) SOARA BABA, who failed to qualify that day, but she made a quick return to have another go two weeks ago and this time did much better, running 3rd in her trial and looking altogether more ready to race. (5) BAEDARI CANDY ran prominently in her trial and while she weakened a little late on, should have come on for it and can go well first up. (3) DDAENGBEOL and (10) FIGHTING GIRL others who didn’t disgrace themselves.
Selections (6) Yeonggwangui Miso (9) Soara Baba (5) Baedari Candy (10) Fighting Girl Next Best 3 Fast Start 6, 11
Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The Korean-breds go over the 1200m in the third where nine of the twelve are on debut. We will watch with interest the performance of (5) PIEONADA. The three-year-old trialed in good fashion finishing close up behind the likes of Uri and Raon Tough Man. The Tiz Wonderful filly clocked one of the faster trial time when compared to her opposition. She sat on speed in her trial suggesting she will be gifted a good run from barrier five. (6) MASTER FUTURE has had two starts to date finishing fourth on both occasions. The three-year-old at his last start was somewhat one-paced in the run home when beaten seven lengths by Nunbit Eunyak who has since placed in stronger company. (8) SUPER LUCKY BOY improved at his second trial in May. The Gyongbudaero colt clocked 62.6 on a dry track for the 1000m, looking at his conformation he looks one that may appreciate a longer journey with time. (2) RAON FASHION is next best coming off a nice trial four weeks back. Expect the Old Fashioned gelding to position on speed after showing plenty of speed in his trial.
Selections (5) Pieonada (6) Master Future (8) Super Lucky Boy (2) Raon Fashion Next Best 9, 3 Fast Start 2, 5
Race 4: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
(8) GLOBAL GOLD ran a front-running 3rd place over this distance on his most recent outing back in January, marking steady improvement on what was his third career appearance. He showed he’s still in form with a good trial in April and if he can get to the front here, he has every chance of winning. (5) HAECHAN ran far better than his 80/1 odds suggested he would on debut last September, leading most of the way before tiring late on. He trialed up well enough behind Global Captain back in February but hasn’t been seen since. Nevertheless, he can run well first-up. (7) DREAM FASHION put in a promising effort on his second start back in January, running 4th on a wet track at this distance. He wasn’t pushed when finishing back in the pack in an April trial and there’s no reason why he can’t pick up from where he left off here. (12) ALCHAN NURI was well back behind Dream Fashion in that January race but previously ran 2nd over 1000M and put in an encouraging trial. There are two first-time starters and of the pair, (2) JANGSAN PARK looks the more likely first-up.
Selections (8) Global Gold (7) Dream Fashion (5) Haechan (12) Alchan Nuri Next Best 2, 4 Fast Start 5, 8
Race 5: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
The Korean-bred gallopers line up in the fifth all looking for their first victory. (7) EAST ONE is the on top selection in a wide open race. The colt has finished in the top four on three occasions from four starts including a last start third over this distance. His trial in April was rather average but we take him based on his efforts earlier this year and towards the end of 2019. (10) NEVER WALK ALONE is the omen bet of the weekend after Liverpool claimed the Premier League Championship on Thursday evening. The three-year-old placed last start in February behind Arirayo when coming from well back. Based on his closing sectional the step-up to the 1300m looks suitable. (1) YAHO GOLDEN CAT trialed in a fast time earlier this month clocking 61.7 seconds for the 1000m on a dry track. His most recent start was disappointing when well back but it was a tougher affair. He finished second two start back over this distance, a similar performance to that day will see him run into the money. The lightly raced (9) NAUI SINHWA trialed respectably in April. The Old Fashioned colt has had the two starts finishing fifth on both occasions. This looks a weaker assignment hence a forward showing would not surprise.

Race 6: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
As weak a maiden race as you’ll find and we’ve had some weak ones already today. We’ll go with (10) RUFFIAN PARK, who has managed to finish no worse than 6th in any of his five appearances so far with his best being a 3rd. That came over 1300M and he stretches out to seven-furlongs today with as good a chance as any of breaking his duck. (6) BEST TAP has a 3rd and a 4th place to his name, and is another who may appreciate the additional half furlong. He ran well in an April trial and is a clear contender here. Also showing well in a trial was (8) THROUGH THE SKY. He’s never been in the first-five in an actual race but offered a little bit in his recent heat and should improve here. Likewise, (2) SEONGPAJANG and (11) HIT THE PACE also have the potential to improve off the back of the layoff.
Selections (10) Ruffian Park (6) Best Tap (8) Through The Sky (11) Hit The Pace Next Best 2, 1 Fast Start 1, 7
Race 7: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
The seventh on the card is likely to leave punters with a cracking headache after doing the form. (3) DAEHYEONG HOJAE was the eventual on top selection. The chestnut comes off a last start fifth behind Our Simon over the 1000m. The Park Dae-heung trained three-year-old trialed fairly in April, expect him to sit just off the speed and be given every chance at the top of the straight. (5) GOLD FIELD is a thirteen start maiden who has managed a placing just once. In saying that the filly is never too far away and this is an extremely weak race. She gets the services of Yoo Seung-wan who is arguably the best jockey riding Seoul Saturday with other topliners making tracks to Busan for the Busan Ilbo Sunday. (2) MAD DIVA has placed twice from the seven starts. The One Cool Cat filly has shown the ability to sit on speed previously, if she can jump clean from barrier two she is capable of finishing in the money. (9) SPEED DANCER reeled off a good last 600m last start running into fifth behind Ganghojeil. The filly gets well back in her races and ideally connections would be hoping she can muster a bit quicker.
Selections (3) Daehyeong Hojae (5) Gold Field Mad Diva (9) Speed Dancer Next Best 7, 10 Fast Start 5, 8
Race 8: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
(5) SUNSHINE TEUKGEUP came from off the pace to run a decent 3rd over 1400M back in February. It’s been a long time since she ran at such a short distance as today’s but she looked sharp in a May trial and is a leading hope today. (6) BLESSING ROAD also drops back in trip although only slightly with all the mare’s recent appearances having been at 1300M. She made all to win a trial last month in a fast time and if she gets the lead here, she may well go all the way again. Also winning a recent trial was (9) GOLDEN JAY. He’s another front runner who has won on a wet track and can be considered today. (7) BLACK PUPIL has also won in the wet and performed very pleasingly in a trial at the beginning of this month. He’s drawn better than he did when performing abysmally at 1200M back in January. (12) CAMP TOUCH has the fastest time of any of these at the distance although it is fair to say that wasn’t an especially quick time itself. Nevertheless, she too looked in good touch in trials and has to be a chance here.
Selections (5) Sunshine Teukgeup (6) Blessing Road (9) Golden Jay (12) Camp Touch Next Best 7, 4 Fast Start 4, 6, 9, 10
Race 9: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
Tactics will play such an important role in the ninth with an abundance of speed engaged to go over the six furlongs. (11) BLACK ZAPPER is the on top selection after a promising start to her career. The daughter of Tiz Wonderful has placed twice in this grade including a third last start behind the talented Dia Road, who went on to win the Donga Ilbo Cup beating Silver Wolf. She was given an easy time of it in her trials but her previous form is strong enough to suggest she can win. (6) TANGO TIME is another Korean-bred that has started his racing career in good fashion. The Hansen gelding is likely to catapult out of the gates and end up in the first couple in running. He ran a good second behind Choegang Team bacak in January and a similar performance will see him go close. (5) LUCKY SANGUN lines up in Class 4 company for the first time coming off a two length victory when clocking a solid time. He’s built with a sprinter’s stature, muscly through the hindquarters. (7) YEONHUI ILCHUL has finished close up in this grade at his past three starts. He clocked 60.6 on a dry track earlier this month suggesting he is forward at the moment and can figure.
Selections (11) Black Zapper (6) Tango Time (5) Lucky Sangun (7) Yeonhui Ilchul Next Best 2, 4 Fast Start 1, 4, 5, 6
Race 10: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
A field of imported three-year-olds tackle the six-furlongs here. There’s only one previous race winner among them. That’s (5) SHARK JJANG, who scored in a tight finish at 1300M on a wet track back in December. His two starts since then haven’t been great but he was beaten by good horses both times and looked well in a trial last month. (4) ROCKUI JEWANG beat Shark Jjang on his way to 3rd place on debut in February. After a slow start he came from well back to run on well and can build on that today. (1) SOMETHING EXPECT was sent off at 120/1 on debut in December but he defied that by finishing 3rd behind Shark Jjang. He was accordingly sent off only slightly better than even-money on his reappearance in February when he finished 3rd again. He will be on pace from the start and should be there or thereabouts once more. Of the others with experience, (7) ACE CHAN is perhaps the most likely to figure. There are three debut-makers but bearing in mind their trial performances, we’ll take a watching brief with all three of them first-up.
Selections (5) Shark Jjang (1) Something Expect (4) Rockui Jewang (7) Ace Chan Next Best 2 Fast Start 1, 11
Race 11: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
The Korean-bred gallopers line up in the eleventh over the 1400m. Going with the inexperienced (3) CHOEGANG TEUKGEUP who broke maiden status last time out over the 1400m. The time was reasonable for this grade, with the good draw the Tiz Wonderful colt is likely to lead and give them something to run down. Yoo Seung-wan is the beneficiary of Moon Se-young riding at Busan this weekend. (1) GLORY VERN has had plenty of racing but looks a chance of figuring in a weak race. The mare has placed on multiple occasions over similar distances and should be able to settle closer from the inside draw. Veteran galloper (2) HAETBINNA gets a good opportunity to collect another cheque at start seventy-three. He has been campaigned over the middle distances in his later years suggesting the 1400m should be suitable first-up. (5) GEUMBIT TANHWAN is next best coming off a fifth over the 1300m back in February. The chestnut is still looking for his first win after fourteen starts.
Selections (3) Choegang Teukgeup (1) Glory Vern (2) Haetbinna (5) Geumbit Tanhwan Next Best 8, 9 Fast Start 3

(1) BIG TRIPLE beat three of these on his way to 3rd place at class and distance on February 9th, coming from behind the pace and running on strongly. He trialed competently enough in April and while he does carry and additional 2.5kg today, he looks firmly in the hunt for the win today. (6) SUN START was among those beaten that day but he has a 2nd and a 3rd to his name at this distance and looks to be a major contender. He won an April trial. (7) CUTIE BARBIE won back to back races last autumn, both of them at this distance. She was slow to get involved on her only 2020 start so far but if she gets away a bit better, has every chance of going close once again. (11) COLORS KING has also won at this distance and drops back in trip having come close over 1800M in February. He is another who carries a little bit more weight today but shouldn’t be discounted. The wildcard is (2) GLOBAL LUCKY. She’s only raced four times for a best finish of 4th, all at shorter distances but she has run well through the line and could well appreciate her first try at two-turns today.

Race 13: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
A compact field of ten will go over the two turns in the thirteenth event. (3) ROYAL SMARTY has been a model of consistency over his thirteen start career to date. The Any Given Saturday colt was a last start winner over this distance when clocking a fast time. He is a unique type as he solely relies on his turn of foot, rarely settling near the speed. (4) RAON SERENA has had the five starts in Class 3 grade for three minor placings. She did go off the boil at her past couple of starts but with the freshen up she needs to be considered. She won her trial in April in good time. (10) SARYEONI HEALING is most experienced galloper in the race with forty starts under his belt. He rarely wins but in an even race he is capable of running into the money as he is never too far away. (9) FAST FASHION has won four from seventeen and needs to be kept safe. The lightly raced five-year-old resumed in February when running midfield before Covid-19 hit. There is a slight query with a poor trial in April but if sound he can figure.
Selections (3) Royal Smarty (4) Raon Serena (10) Saryeoni Healing (9) Fast Fashion Next Best 7, 8 Fast Start 1, 4

(6) BRIGADIER GENERAL and (2) GLOBAL ACE came home in 3rd and 4th places respectively when they raced one another over a mile on February 2nd. Global Ace had been the more favoured that day on the back of some very encouraging performances at the start of his career. It may have been a little too much too soon and the break may have done him good so he is favoured to overturn that form today. Brigadier General will still be a danger though. He too tackles two turns for the first time but his running style suggests it should suit. (1) MR. TURNER registered back to back 3rd place finishes at class and distance around the turn of the year and while his most recent effort in February wasn’t good, he clearly has ability at this level. So too does non-winner (3) DONGBANGUI GIEOK, a horse who always finds a way to get beat but who has nevertheless racked up plenty of money finishes. (12) K.N ACE looks best of the rest.

A handy bunch of gallopers will line up in the last to cap off the big day of racing. Last year’s Derby winner (7) WONDERFUL FLY is the on top selection as he looks set for a good preparation. The four-year-old was outclassed when lining up in the Segye Ilbo in January but now lines up in restricted company. He has won five races from eleven starts and is a Class 2 winner in this grade two starts back. (11) YEOKJEONUI USEUNG trialed well in April. The six-year-old comes off a last start third behind Seongpa, who lines up in the Busan Ilbo tomorrow. With the lightweight on his back he can figure fresh over the 1400m. (5) KILIUI JEWANG has had the nine top-three finishes from thirteen career starts. He finished third behind Munhak Ariari in February which reads well for this race. He is one of the likely pacemakers and has drawn well. (9) SUPER FLUID looks next best, being a class and distance winner previously. He is unlikely to match his opposition’s early speed so look for him rattling off a quick last sectional.

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
Twelve maidens to kick things off with five of them racing for the very first time. A couple of those have some promise but we’ll start with the experience. (9) DREAM GIRLS has been to the races twice already and ran on nicely for 3rd on the latest of these on January 18th. She was nine-lengths behind a good winner but has cope for improvement and is a leading chance here. (1) NONSTOP WINNING raced twice without distinction early last year before suffering a setback which has kept him out of action since last month. He did though look very handy indeed when winning a January trial in a fast time and should be a different prospect this time around. (7) TIZ CITY was well supported on debut a month ago. He weakened late to finish 5th over 1300M and can be given another chance dropped back to the shortest distance today. Turning to the first-timers and (3) BEST TOUR was a trial winner back last November. It’s taken him a while to get to the track since then but should go well first-up from a good draw.

The three-year-old-fillies will go over the six furlongs in the second event. (9) DAEJIUI YEOIN is one of only two debutants engaged in the field but judging by her trial she is ready to fire at her first start. The Simon Pure filly trialed nicely when clocking a good time on a dry-rated track. She took a sit behind the leaders in the trial before working through the line nicely. (5) OLD BLADE lines up for her second start after an encouraging debut. The filly finished third behind favourite Ice Punch and whilst she was well beaten we can expect further improvement at her second start. (1) MISS ELITE has been rattling off some good sectionals for this class. The Peace Rules filly will appreciate the extra furlong as she steps up to the 1200m for the first time. (6) HAPPY PLAN showed significant improvement at her second run when finishing second behind Jeonjeongsageum. She went over the 1300m last time out suggesting she should be capable of figuring over 1200m after sitting just off the speed last start.

Three-year-old maidens here with two of the ten making their racecourse debuts. And one of those first-timers looks a prospect with (5) SARAMIRANEUNBYEOL having won a trial in a fast time at the end of January. Moon Se Young partnered him in the heat and though he is suspended, Alan Munro is a more than adequate replacement and the colt can go very well first up. The favourite though will be (4) TOP SEED. He ran 3rd at this distance behind Choegang Teukgeup on what was his second career start three weeks ago, finishing strongly. He should have come on for that run and be fitter third-up today. (1) K N WONDERFUL may appreciate the slight step up in trip today following three solid if unspectacular efforts at shorter while (7) HONEY BUTTER BOBBY showed significant improvement when 3rd last start and can maintain that momentum here. Aside from Saramiraneunbyeol, the other debut-maker is Tony Castenheira’s (8) JANGSAN BADA. He too won his trial and there’s no reason why he can’t go well first-up.

The fourth on the card looks to have only a handful of winning chances. Three-year-old (8) GEOMPO looks hard to beat coming off a last start second placing. The Hansen colt has been consistent since beginning his career in August last year, yielding a win and three minor placings from five starts. He’s an on speed runner and it looks as if this field will have trouble running him down. (5) SPEED GO lines up for his second start after winning on debut over the 1000m. Whilst it wasn’t the strongest field last start he went on for a dominant victory winning by five lengths. Of the speedier types engaged he has the best draw suggesting he may be first to cross. (7) KING SON is another that has had the one start for a victory. He hasn’t been seen since May 2018 and resumes twenty-two months later. It is hard to gauge where he is at but apart from the aforementioned horses the remainder of the field is not all that strong. (9) GOLD MOUNT was a winner back in October and has since finished fourth behind Complete Captain in similar class. The lightly raced five-year-old should be considered an each-way hope.

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
The first on Saturday will see a field of twelve maidens go over the short course. In a race that lacks form, (1) SIBERIA looks ready to strike at her first start after a solid trial. The Chapel Royal filly settled midfield before working through the line nicely when untouched by Kim Jeong-jun who rides her for her debut. (2) BEST PARTY was well beaten at her firs couple of starts as a two-year-old but has trialled reasonably since. The chestnut took up the running in the trial before going down a length. Look for improvement here. (5) SPRING COME lines up for his third start after being well beaten at his first couple of attempts. His times have been good enough to suggest he can run into the money. (9) BAEKDUWA HALLA ran a fair trial when qualifying for her first run. The Old Fashioned filly was slightly green but ran through the line reasonably.

Tricky little maiden this with no standouts but plenty having shown a bit of ability. Others have been faster over the distance than (4) ARARIYO but the colt has a 3rd and a 2nd from three starts so far. He was well back behind a good winner last time but has shown he knows what to do and from a good draw can lead from the start. (11) SHINY FIRE showed improvement when runner-up on what was her second career start. She led until the closing stages that day and will look to do similar here. She comes in after three months off and if she can overcome the wide draw, will be a danger. Moon Se Young climbs aboard (12) NONGBUI SUCHEAHWA. The filly has never been worse than 5th in five outings to date and should at least continue that run here. (6) HANSEN CHOICE and (9) NEVER WALK ALONE are others in the hunt.
Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The three-year-old Korean-bred gallopers line up in the third all looking for their first win. (6) HEUNG CAPTAIN was good on debut when finishing 2nd behind Dream Po Re over the 1000M. The son of Colors Flying bounced out of the gates well and found the fence early on. Expect him to work forward once again with limited speed engaged. (3) RAON HIGH is another on speed galloper who comes out of a three-year-old event where she finished 3rd. She was beaten 2.5L when clocking a time that should see her be competitive in this event. She placed in a juvenile event prior to her last run. (11) BARBELL looks one that can improve on his first couple of starts. The Old Fashioned gelding is likely to settle midfield or worse but can run into the money based on previous efforts. (2) SOJUNGHAN GOLDEN made up ground in the straight when debuting in a juvenile event in December. The Cielo Gold gelding gave the impression he will appreciate the extra furlong and perhaps longer in future starts.

(2) DREAM PO RE was an impressive winner on debut on January 5th. The Shackleford colt is up in both class and distance today but the manner of his win suggests he should be firmly in the frame again. It took (4) DONGJJOK GLORY a few more goes to figure things out, but he was a very nice winner last month, coming from off the pace to score over 1300M. He too is up in class and is a contender. (11) WONDER K is yet to win but has run 2nd in his latest two. That has resulted in him being bumped up to this level, but Moon Se Young’s presence aboard means he is sure to be backed. Completing the list of those up in class is (9) STRONG RED, who made all to see off a somewhat limited field over 1300M in December. All four of those have claims here but if you prefer one with experience at this class then (5) DIA KEY is the one to go for. Having got his maiden win at 1000M in December, he stepped up to this level and ran 3rd, beating a couple of these, at 1200M a month ago.

A field of maidens will go over the two turns in the fifth where there is a lack of form engaged. That means the form of (2) A ONE KING looks good enough to take this race. The Exploit four-year-old ran on strong over this distance last time out when finishing 4th behind Colors De Lago. His times have been far better than his rivals engaged. (9) WONDERFUL ORANGE has been hitting the line well of late when the race has

Moon Se Young is back from injury today
Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The three-year-old maiden gallopers line up for the first on the thirteen-event card where we can get excited to see some first starters who look to have some potential. (5) OLD BLADE produced an eye-catching trial when untouched by Antonio Da Silva, who will take the ride for her first start. She didn’t run the fastest time, but she covered the ground with ease and looked to have plenty left in the tank. She showed early speed in her heat so expect her to position on the pace. (3) MAGIC PLAN is another one that wasn’t asked for in her trial but seemed to cover the ground well. The Plan filly will be ridden by Park Tae-Jong and it will be interesting to see what she offers when in full flight. (1) ICE PUNCH has race experience and will line up for his second start. He was good on debut when second, less than two lengths behind Dia Key. Punters can rejoice as the amazing Moon Se Young is back in action, he will be aboard the amazing looking grey galloper. (6) CHEONJI ULLIM had one run back in July when finishing second behind Taktuein where the margin was eight lengths. Connections seem to have gone him right again and he can run into the money. Good race with some promising types.

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
Weak maiden here but that means it’s very competitive with any number vying to be the least slow around the 1300M. It could well end up being (2) THANK YOU DAECHEON, who has been one-paced in two outings so far but has registered competitive times in decent company. He’ll settle just behind the pace and could out-plod them late on. (3) GLOBAL WANGJA ran through the line nicely for 3rd on debut over 1000M in December. The additional trip should suit, and he can be in the frame here. Draw a line through (4) EAST ONE’s latest effort which came from the widest barrier. He should be able to get to the lead here and can be a danger. (8) CHEONJI KKOT BARAM is one of only two in the race – the other being East One – who has a runner-up finish to his name and that should put him in the hunt as well. (11) SPEED DANCER looks best of the limited rest.

The third event looks tough for punters with many chances engaged. The dominant form line appears to be the race which Bravo Gwacheon won back on 4th January. (7) WILD WOODS finished third in the race over 1300m when running through the line strong. The Forest Camp three-year-old is likely to work forward in a race that lacks speed and be one of the main players come the business end. (5) GUREUM BADA crossed the line with Wild Woods last start and is another of the main chances. The gelding improved significantly at his second start after being well beaten on debut. He should be able to settle in the first half of the field. (4) HONG SAN ran on fairly last start when lining up in a 2yo event won by Lady Kelly. He should appreciate an easier assignment along with a better draw suggesting Park Byeong-Yun may be able to settle him closer to the speed. (6) THE DREAM lost considerable ground when they jumped last start resulting in the Menifee gelding having to settle well back. The three-year-old managed to run home well when it was all over.

(3) FUTURE FIRE steps up in class having secured his maiden win at the fourth time of asking on January 5. The manner of that victory was pleasing as he made all to score by a full-five lengths in a time that would win plenty of races at this level too. He’s drawn nicely once more and can lead all the way again. Experienced campaigners (6) GWANGYA BULGIDUNG and (11) BARAMUI MISO came home 4th and 5th with a length between them when they raced each other over the distance on January 4. Neither wins out of turn – or in the latter’s case at all – but both have enough about them to be competitive here and can aim to place. (2) BLUE DAEJAYEON tackles the distance for the first time and can go well from a good draw. (10) INDY LADY is inconsistent but is another capable of running into some money in this company.

It was a sunny but cold 2020 Opening Day at Seoul on Saturday
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
Three-year-old maidens here with no fewer than seven of the twelve going around for the very first time. Of those with experience, the clear standout is (7) GLORY FIGHTER. The Temple City filly came from off the pace to finish off well on debut over this distance on December 7th. She’ll want further eventually but for the time being, she looks nicely in here and is the one to beat. As for the others who have raced, none particularly caught the eye although (8) WONDERFUL MAGIC found himself on pace early before weakening and may have come on for that run while (2) GREAT WAY never really got going but previously performed adequately in a trial and is another who can improve. As for the first-timers, (5) HEUNG CAPTAIN is the obvious one. He was just beaten a head in a trial last November in a fast time and if he brings that form to the races, has every chance of making a winning start. (6) DREAM PO RE went through a couple of trials and he too posted a competitive looking time two weeks ago.

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
Twelve maidens will line up in the second on the card where the main chances appear to have been dealt wide draws. (12) GOOD WONDER makes her fourth career start and has seemed to improve with each run. The Hawk Wing filly was game last start when getting tired late after leading for the majority of the race. She did exert a lot of energy early in the run, she looks one that will appreciate to set a modest pace or take a sit. (11) SAEROUN BOBAE comes off a second last time out behind Samseong Viva. This looks a weaker assignment and she has each-way claims. She won’t be able to match the early speed so expect her to sit midfield. (1) ONE AND ONLY has posted good times over the five furlongs as she steps up to the 1300M for the first time. The filly has been able to settle just off the speed in her two runs to date and Kim Dong-soo can elect to sit closer if he wishes from the inside draw. (7) HANIL MOA is capable of running into the money after finishing in the top five at her past three starts. She is somewhat one-paced and will need to be in touch with the leading division at the top of the straight.
Selections: (12) Good Wonder (11) Saeroun Bobae (7) Hanil Moa (1) One And Only
Next Best: 9, 6

Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million
A pretty ordinary looking maiden featuring a few who do seem likely to make their breakthroughs at some stage. Most likely today is (2) FUTURE FIRE. He’s raced just three times so far, recording a 3rd and a 4th in his most recent two, the latter of which was at this distance. He isn’t the quickest of starters, but he is capable of running on well and he should come out on top today. (11) BOMNALUI GIEOK has shown steady progress over five outings and while his 3rd place at this distance last time out was in an even weaker race than this, he has good scope for more here. If he can overcome the wide draw to get on pace, he will be a factor. (6) NONGBUI SUCHEAHWA was sent off favourite for her latest back in November, She was ultimately a little one-paced and came home in 3rd but she should at least be matching that here. (3) CHEONJI KKOT BARAM and (10) LEGEND WIN, both of whom come in off career-best finishes, are others who warrant consideration.
There is an abundance of speed engaged in the fourth, suggesting they will run the first half of the race in a good time as they sort themselves out. (12) SPEED BIRD was good on debut when winning over the five furlongs. The Kim Hag-soo trained galloper jumped quickly and led all the way clocking a good time for Class 6. Punters can expect another forward ride from Lee Hyeon-jong who partners the colt once again. (6) LUCKY BEOPJEON has been a model of consistency since beginning his racing career in June last year. Although he hasn’t notched his first win yet, he has finished in the top three on four occasions from five starts. He ran third behind Stretto last time out over this distance which reads well for this assignment. (11) SAMSEONG VIVA won over the 1300M last time out in class 6 company. Alan Munro will ride the three-year-old who appreciated sitting on speed last time out. (2) ROYAL GHOST is another looking for her first win. She has seven top four finishes from eight starts and has collected a cheque at her past two starts. From barrier two, she is a big chance to finish in the money once again.
Plenty of in-form types clash in this nice-looking handicap. (8) DIA KEY steps up in class and distance following a good maiden win over 1000M on December 7th. He did previously weaken on debut at 1300M a month earlier but ran through the line well when winning and looks ready for the extended trip. (1) LUCKY MYEONGHO also comes up to the 1200M having a win and a runner-up finish, the latter at this class, over 1000M. Both he and Dia Key will be on pace from the start and the winner could come down to the one who sees out the trip better. (2) CHEONJI POKPUNG shouldn’t have too many problems with the distance having already won at further. He comes in off back to back 4th places and can improve on those today. (3) CAMP TOUCH and (7) DAEMA JIPUNG are others in the hunt.
A field of twelve fillies and mares will face the starter in the sixth where they will go over the six furlongs. (7) JEOLYE was admirable last start when breaking maiden status. From barrier seven, the Secret Circle filly was never closer than four wide from the rail. She lost considerable ground on the turn before hitting overdrive and going on for a good win. She is penalized 3kg, but she showed last time out that she’s tough. (10) CLEANUP SHINE lines up for her second start after a respectable debut. The Awesome Of Course filly comes out of the Jeolye race where she finished third, beaten just over a length. With a bigger advantage in the weight scale, she can threaten. (4) NALARA HILL is one of the Korean-bred gallopers engaged who has won a couple in the easier grades. She has shown at her last two starts she can be competitive in this grade. She finished fourth last start behind Platinum Euro when one-paced through the line. (1) MOONHAK MISCHIEF finished third behind Mark Story on debut and then was somewhat disappointing at her second start when finishing midfield. She’s drawn well and can bounce back in this event.
(1) JEONGMUN SUMMIT registered two good wins at 1200M and 1000M and was sent off favourite at 1300M on November 24th. From a wide draw and after a bump at the start, he was unable to get to the front and then over raced around the turn before weakening. (more…)
The final weekend of racing at Seoul for 2019 gets underway on Saturday with 11 races from 10.45 to 18.00:
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million
Twelve debutants line up in the first on the card where a couple of them have shown some ability with soft trial performances. (8) LUISA was nominated for an event a few weeks back but was scratched on race day. She looks one that may be ready to hit the ground running early. She covered additional ground due to a wide draw in her trial and let down nicely in the straight to finish second. She is by Federalist and out of a handy mare in Kkakjaengi who won six races and amassed over US$500k. She’s a well-developed two-year-old (477kg) and will be watched with interest. (2) ALL BAEK won her trial in good fashion and should be considered a winning threat. The Hansen filly cornered awkwardly in her trial but won her heat in an effortless performance. Ham Wan Sik rode a couple of these in their trials and has elected to go with her. (1) LONDON HEAT posted a fair time but was urged along in her trial similar to that of race conditions. She has drawn well and should be kept safe in selections. (7) GLOBAL SUN finished second in her trial when lining up on a wet rated track. The horse’s silks have had plenty of success of late.

A lackluster field of twelve will face the starter in the second on the card over the short course. (6) JILJUUI KKUM lines up for her second career start after finishing fourth on debut. She ran on strongly at her first career start a posted a relatively fast time. If Choi Bum-Hyun can get her to sit slightly closer to the speed in the run she will take some holding out. (7) LAKE STAR is another having her second start after finishing midfield on debut. The lack of strength of her opposition in this race means she can run into some money. She showed a reasonable turn of foot last time out. (10) GLOBAL WANGJA ran fourth in his trial in only a fair time but thay may be good enough to collect a cheque. With the awkward draw he may be forced to settle rearwards and save his effort for the home straight. (2) SUPER PARK was well beaten on debut but it was a much stronger affair. With the drop in class, combined with a better draw keep her safe in your numbers.
Selections (6) Jiljuui Kkum (7) Lake Star (10) Global Wangja (2) Super Park

Race 3: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million
The third on the card will see the maiden gallopers stretched out to the 1700m. (10) CHEONNYEONUI GODO was disappointing last time out when one paced through the line over 1300m. His performances prior were strong enough to suggest he is a winning hope in this event. He ran over the 1700m three starts back when finishing fourth in an event superior to this assignment. (1) BAEKDUSAN CHEONJI ran a better race last time out. The Hansen two-year-old ran on fairly from the tail to finish fifth over 1300m. He may be better suited by the 1700m giving him more time to find his rhythm and work into the race. (8) SEN KING sat on speed last time out when yielding ground in the straight to finish fifth. He ran over 1700m two starts back when using the same tactics and finished midfield. Given the lack of depth in the field anything sitting on speed may be able to hold on for some minor money. (3) HONAM DAERO looks next best after finishing third over the same distance last time out. The three-year-old did not clock an impressive time but he showed some fight in the run home.
Selections (10) Cheonnyeonui Godo (1) Baekdusan Cheonji (8) Sen King (3) Honam Daero

The fourth race will see a field of twelve line up over the two turns at Class 5 level. (5) STRONG QUEEN looks ready to break through after being the bridesmaid and not the bride at three of her five career starts to date. A big positive is the rider change with Grand Prix winning jockey Antonio Da Silva being legged aboard. She is likely to settle just behind the speed and fly home. (7) GEUMSUNI STAR looks a winning chance as well consistently finishing in the top four at his past few starts. The three-year-old finished behind a very nice two-year-old in the form of Determination last time out. He has been running times that will see him one of the main chances in the race. (8) QUIET ADELE broke maiden status last time out in a weaker affair. The two-year-old will be stretched out to the 1700m for this first time after showing a nice turn of foot last time out. She has the featherweight of 52.5kg and will be steaming home in the final stages. (9) BLACK GINGA has been thereabouts and can run into some minor money once again.

Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million
The fifth race is an interesting affair with some progressive gallopers engaged. (11) GLOBAL THUNDER looks a nice galloper coming off a last start win. He has a mature racing style with him settling well just behind the speed last time out before being extricated of heels and running the pacemakers down. The time wasn’t the fastest however he will take improvement from that run and he also looked like he had another gear that wasn’t used. (4) P.K. HILL backed up his maiden victory with an impressive second behind Elite Lady. She is a speedy type who has drawn well and may even lead. (7) RED SUN ran on well last time out when getting well back in the run early. The Ecton Park three-year-old is likely to be beaten for speed in the early stages but should flood home. (9) SPECTOR QUEEN is another back marker who has shown a good turn of foot in the weaker grades. She ran a good time on a dry track last start and a similar performance will see her figure in this assignment.
Selections (11) Global Thunder (4) P.K Hill (7) Red Sun (9) Spector Queen

Race 6: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
The sixth race on the card will see another field of Class 5 gallopers line up over the 1000m where the on-speed engagements look the main chances. (3) LUCKY SANGUN set the track alight last time out when clocking 59.9 for the 1000m on a sloppy track. The Old Fashioned two-year-old has drawn ideally to sit on speed once again and will be benefited by the claim of Kim Deok-Hyeon. (1) CUPID HONEY looks the main threat after an impressive start to his racing career winning at just his second start. Lee Hyeok will ride the two-year-old for the first time and is likely to try and keep Lucky Sangun outside of him and not give up the lead. (4) SENTOSA is a ten start maiden but a win doesn’t look too far away. The filly comes of a fourth last time out when somewhat one paced through the line. She has finished in the top four at her past nine starts and continues to earn. (7) MISSILE CANDY looks best of the rest after running on well last time out from well back.
There does not appear to be an outright pacemaker in the seventh race where the majority of gallopers like to settle midfield or worse. (7) GEUM ROYAL is looking for three straight wins. The progressive type won in good style last time out when winning by four lengths. The three-year-old will have apprentice Kim Deok-Hyeon aboard once again who has not been defeated on the Chapel Royal colt to date. Although the galloper has the claim, the weight is the biggest concern rising four kilograms on his last win. (11) RAON HANNIBAL has been impressive to date in the weaker grades. The filly finished third last time out when having her first try at Class 4 level. The wide draw makes it tough but she is lightly weighted and a good ride from Lee Hyeok will see her in the mix at the business end. (6) BAEKDUUI JEONGSANG finished second behind Geum Royal last time out. The four-year-old carried 1.5kg more than the winner last time out whilst this time he will get a 2kg weight advantage. Leading rider Kim Yong-Geun will be legged aboard which is also a positive. (10) JEMA TEUKGEUP has previously won in this class and should be considered an each-way prospect. The filly comes off a last start third when hitting the line hard.
The imported maidens will take to the track in the eighth where the field is inexperienced (4) LORD BAN has had just the two starts and placed on both occasions. The two-year-old finished behind a handy type in Mark Story last time out and looks hard to beat. He tried to lead last time out before being ran down. Expect Song Jae-Chul to employ the same tactics from barrier four combined with limited early speed drawn inside of him. (9) SOUL MERIT showed improvement at his second career start. The American Pharoah colt ran through the line well after settling midfield. He is lightly weighted, if Choi Bum Hyun manages to get him one off the fence he should have a soft enough run to steam home. (2) DORAON POPEYE has had two race starts yielding two placings. The gelding ran a good time last start over the same distance, a similar time in this event will see him collect some money. (8) MOONHAK EMPIRE ran through the line fairly at his first start. With some natural improvement at his second start he can finish in the top four.

The ninth on the card has plenty of in-form gallopers, some proven in Class 3 company whilst some look progressive types coming off Class 4 victories. Whilst there appears to be plenty of early speed engaged, (11) GAON FORCE looks one that has the speed to overcome his wide draw and either find the fence or sit outside the leader. His last win was impressive showing early dash and going on to win. He’s proven over 1700m in good time suggesting he will take some beating. (2) SEMYEONG GISANG comes off a win over the same distance last time out in Class 4 company. The Clear Attempt colt did a brilliant job to lug the 57kg over the two turns and post a good time. He is aided by the claim of Moon Sung-Hyeok. (1) TRI THUNDER has been in good form winning two of his past three. He hasn’t been given much respect of late when being sent out at juicy odds but he has proved the he has ability. He has sat in the leading division at his past few starts and the inside draw will mean he will get every chance. (4) SMARTY BLUE should be respected. He is hard to gauge as this is his first run since July but he trialed well and he has a record of six top three finishes from ten starts including three wins.

The tenth is another 1700m event for the Class 3 gallopers. (9) DANCING BLADE looks hard to beat coming of a third last start behind the impressive Raymond. The filly is second up this preparation and she should strip fitter after her first up performance. Antonio Da Silva replaces Kim Yong Geun. (8) HWANSANG STAR finished second behind Jewangui Byeol in a race that quite a few of these runners are coming out of. The Violence three-year-old ran through the line well and has been a model of consistency of late. (2) CALL WIN appears the best drawn of the favoured gallopers engaged. He won two in a row, including one in this class before finishing third in the Jewangui Byeol race. He has been racing on speed at his past few starts which seems to be working yielding the two wins and a placing. (6) SLING STONE has shown plenty of potential is his eleven start career to date. A compact field of nine will face the starter in the last on the card. (5) PENETRO looks a good chance in a race with limited chances. The Spicule gelding was hindered by his natural early speed last time out when jumping well only to have three of his rivals kick up and keep him wide throughout. He looks one that will park just off the speed and run home strong as we saw two starts back when defeating the talented Yaho Smart Cat. (3) M J POWER looks the natural danger and may start favourite in the event. He comes out of the Kookje Shinmun Cup where he was outclassed down at Busan. He was a Class 2 winner two starts back when given a peach of a ride from Lim Gi Won. He is a consistent type and is a winning chance. (9) PHEONIX SUN has gone off the boil of late but is has plenty of talent. He hasn’t had a run for three months which is maybe what he needs to reinvigorate his performances. The lightly raced six-year-old has won five races from twelve starts and is a Class 2 winner back in April. (2) CREMOA POWER is another that has ability but hasn’t been putting his best foot forward of late. In a weak Class 2 event he is a chance of running into some minor money.
