Champion jockey Moon Se Young is in town ahead of the KRA Cup Mile on Sunday and he is in with plenty of chances.

English racecards can be found here. Here are notes on races 2-10

Race 2: Class 6 / 1200M / Allowance / KRW 40 Million / 13:25 (KST)

(8) INDIAN CHIEF has come home in 5th place in each of his three attempts so far, all of them at 1000M and he could be the one to make the breakthrough here. He’s shown the best finish of any of these and the extra furlong may be to his benefit. The one with the best result so far is (6) B.K. ONE, who was beaten three-lengths into 2nd at this distance on a sloppy track a month ago. That was much improved from his debut and he should go well again. The others do not excite. (10) BEST CHEONGCHUN was ok on debut and can be given another chance after a disappointing second start and we’ll expect improvement from (1) GEUMTE and (2) VICAR FAMILY. The one debut maker (7) STYLISH was hardly impressive in trials but must be given a chance against this average lot.

Favourites: (8) Indian Chief (6) B.K. One (10) Best Cheongchun (2) Vicar Family
Next Best: 5, 7, 9, 1
Outsiders: 3, 4,
Fast Starters: 1, 5, 8

Race 3: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 14:10 (KST)

This lot come in with 0 wins for 118 starts between them so something has to give. It’s tempting therefore to go with the ones who have done the least amount wrong so far. They would be (1) CAPE MAGIC and (7) OH MY CAPTAIN with the latter the more favoured of the two. He runs best when he can get forward early and should be able to here. Best at this distance is (4) CHEONGMA DAEJANGUN. He tends to go back at the start and close and against this calibre of opposition, should be going very well. The other one to consider is (3) EUNGDAPARA, who does at least have a 3rd place to her name.

Favourites: (7) Oh My Captain (4) Cheongma Daejangun (1) Cape Magic (3) Eungdapara
Next Best: 6, 5
Outsiders: 2, 8
Fast Starters: 7

Race 4: Class 5 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:00 (KST)

Just fillies and mares and (1) GOLDEN KINGS is up in class following her maiden victory on her 2nd start on March 4th. She’ll need to find some more here but will go forward early and has good claims. Also up in class in (2) BLUE CAT. She has finished 2nd in both her two starts to date but shouldn’t be overwhelmed by anything here. She will also go forward. There are a couple of big dangers among the more experienced runners. (6) ULTRA MAGIC looks the best of them, 3rd last time out and perhaps ready to win again. Seoul’s champion jockey Moon Se Young is in town to ride in the KRA Cup Mile on Sunday and he takes the mount on (7) KWAEHAN MYEONGPUM who has come close in both her starts so far this year. (4) DAMYANG CHEONSA, (5) CHOEGANG TUHON and the up in class (11) MAIN VICAR are others capable of finding the money in this competitive event.

Favourites: (1) Golden Kings (2) Blue Cat (6) Ultra Magic (7) Kwaehan Myeongpum
Next Best: 5, 4, 11
Outsiders: 3, 8, 9, 10, 12
Fast Starters: 2, 11

Race 5: Class 5 / 1300M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:50 (KST)

(5) YEONGGWANGUISINHWA made all to get her maiden victory over 1200M on March 4th. She’s up in class today but must be given respect. She’s from the track’s top stable and has a chance of repeating. (1) SUNGANUI BEOPCHIK was considered sufficiently talented to be sent to Seoul for the nation’s top juvenile race last November. That didn’t go well and nor did his next two starts but he returned to form with a good 2nd place at 1200M last start and will be backed here. (10) CLEAN CHOEGANG has come close recently and comes close again while (3) LADY CHARTERED can match or better back to back 5ths in her last two starts. Among the others, (6) DONGGWANG JEIL and (7) SHARP WIN look best placed for improvement.

Favourites: (5) Yeonggwanguisinhwa (1) Sunganui Beopchik (10) Clean Choegang (7) Sharp Win
Next Best: 3, 6, 2,
Outsiders: 4, 8, 9, 11, 12
Fast Starters: 5, 7, 11

Race 6: Class 4 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 16:40 (KST)

Small field but open race and (8) BRAVO MARINE is the pick. Peter Wolsley’s Aussie bred was 5th over a mile a couple of weeks ago and can go better back at 1400M today. Kim Yong Kwan’s (1) GUMALLI was 3rd on debut three weeks ago and will be well backed to follow up while (2) SINSEGYE SINHWA is sent in against imported opposition and should be competitive following a decent 3rd place behind two good ones last start. (7) GANGJA BONSAEK and (5) HWANHUIUI BYEOL, up in class following a four-length victory last time and likely to be the pace-setter here, are the others to consider.

Favourites: (8) Bravo Marine (7) Gangja Bonsaek (1) Gumalli (2) Sinsegye Sinhwa
Next Best: 5, 3
Outsiders: 4, 6
Fast Starters: 5

Race 7: Class 4 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 17:20 (KST)

(1) STEAL THE SHOW WHY could only manage 4th of 6 in a Korean Oaks trial at the start of last month but should have too much for this field on what will be her first try at a mile. She will look to lead all the way. (3) PURPLE OCEAN and (5) HOT COMMEND both ran in last year’s Oaks and the former is better placed to stop the favourite here. She will though need to be forgiven for a poor effort at this distance two weeks ago. (8) WORLD QUICK has three 3rd places in three tries at this class and should improve. She was one place behind (6) MUBI SONATA back in January – the latter returns for the first time since here.

Favourites: (1) Steal The Show Why (3) Purple Ocean (8) World Quick (5) Hot Commend
Next Best: 6, 7
Outsiders: 2, 4, 9
Fast Starters: 1, 7

Race 8: Class 2 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 18:00 (KST)

A couple of good ones go here. (3) TONGIL SIDAE has won three of five so far including last start at this class over a mile. (1) WONDERFUL TODAY is up in class but comes in following back to back wins including last time at this distance. At this stage Tongil Sidae is favoured but both have every chance. Those two will be a short priced forecast. Ones with the potential to cause them some bother include (4) LAST TICKET, who is a reliable money winner and (5) CHOEGANGIJI, who was 5th behind Tongil Sidae last start. (7) JUNGANG DAEHAE and (8) FIELD SCAMPER are also capable on their day.

Favourites: (3) Tongil Sidae (1) Wonderful Today (4) Last Ticket (5) Choegangiji
Next Best: 7, 8, 2
Outsiders: 6, 9
Fast Starters: 2, 6

Race 9: Class 3 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 18:30 (KST)

(8) EVANGELINE didn’t get a great trip when well backed in the mud at the start of March but can be supported to get back to winning ways today with the Seoul champion jockey on board. Best placed to stop her is (1) SEORABEOL GONGJU, who beat three of these when a class a distance winner on March 11th. (12) GLOBAL KING was 3rd over 1800M first-up after a spell last month and is an interesting entrant at 1200M today. (6) SUPER STORM is up in class following victory over a modest set of imports and will need to find more here while (2) CHEONHA ULLIM disappointed over a mile last time but has had a couple of months off since and should be happier at 1200M today.

Favourites: (8) Evangeline (1) Seorabeol Gongju (6) Super Storm (12) Global King
Next Best: 2, 5, 4
Outsiders: 3, 7, 9, 10, 11
Fast Starters: 3, 12

Race 10: Class 1 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 105 Million / 19:00 (KST)

Nice competitive event to finish with and (4) MIRACLE LINE steps up to class 1 for the first time following a dominant six-length win over 1900M last start. This is his first time racing at this distance for over a year and it will be tough but he should be competitive. Also up in class and set to be competitive is (5) INDIAN STAR. She’s won seven of ten so far but is yet to strike at further than 1200M. Top-rated and therefore carrying top weight is (1) HIGH FIVE. He beat three of these when racing 2nd over 1400M on his last start and can go well once more. (7) WINNER’S MARINE was a class 1 winner last start at 1800M and will be shorter than the 19/1 she was sent off that day. (3) MAC AND CHEESE can also be dangerous with a top jockey booking today. All of the rest have some form of claim too but those are the top ones.

Favourites: (4) Miracle Line (1) High Five (5) Indian Star (3) Mac And Cheese
Next Best: 7, 2, 8,  9
Outsiders: 6
Fast Starters: 4, 5

Full Sunday Preview: Bold Kings v Triple Nine, Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup

It’s a big Sunday of racing in Korea. Pinot Noir heads the field for the Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup at Seoul but the most interesting race of the day is in Busan where Grand Prix winner Bold Kings takes on President’s Cup winner Triple Nine and also Gumpo Sky in a real class 1 test.

DSC_3289-select (1)

Bold Kings beat Gumpo Sky by a neck in the Grand Prix. They face off again, with Triple Nine also in attendance, on Sunday

The first race at Seoul is at 10:50am and the first at Busan at 1pm. 12 races will be simulcast to Singapore and Malaysia while Seoul races 7, 8 and 9 will be shown in Australia on Sky Racing 2.

English language racecards are here. Notes on all simulcast races are below (we spent most of Friday dodging winners so treat with caution):

Busan Race 1: Class 5 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 13:00

(6) ILMANGMUJE got back to back wins in December and January and following a creditable 3rd place last time, can get back to winning ways today. She’ll likely come from just off the pace along with (5) QUICK FORCE, how has two 2nds and two 3rds from four starts to date and can go close again. Up front early will be (8) ACE POWER and (3) BLUE STORM, both of whom have claims although on Friday it wasn’t easy for horses to lead all the way. Next best is (7) MAJOR WINNER.

Favourites: (6) Ilmangmuje (5) Quick Force (8) Ace Power (3) Blue Storm
Next Best: 7, 2, 4, 9
Remainder: 1, 10
Fast Starters: 3, 4, 8, 9

Seoul Race 5: Class 5 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 13:20

Big field and a competitive one too (2) JISANG BIHAENG just gets the nod over (11) SUSEONG CAPTAIN; both come in following 2nd place finishes at this class with the former having done it at this distance. Both will go forward early and both have claims. (5) BEST TAKER drops back in distance after a decent 4th at 1700M last month and can go well while both (9) GWASOK DOLPUNG and (13) FLY WING can be given further chances after slightly disappointing recent starts. (10) KKUMDONGNE, who beat Gasok Dolpung when winning at class and distance in December, may also be considered.

Favourites: (2) Jisang Bihaeng (11) Suseong Captain (5) Best Taker (9) Gwasok Dolpung
Next Best: 10, 3, 13, 1, 6, 8
Remainder: 4, 7, 12, 14
Fast Starters: 2, 3, 11

Busan Race 2: Class 5 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 13:40

(14) DAMYANG JANGGUN is up in class and distance following a maiden win at the fifth time of asking last month and he is more than capable of following up here. (11) FOUR STAR actually beat Damyang Janggun when recording his own maiden win in January. He went on to run 3rd behind (3) GARAK GONGWON at this distance on his first try at class 5. Garak Gongwon followed up with another 2nd place and both must be considered here. (6) DAEHANUIMYEONGSEONG returned from a six-month spell with a very solid run over 1300M three weeks ago and can show more progress here. (4) WISH ME LUCK hasn’t excelled in two starts at this class since winning on his debut but gets another chance while (7) PEACE BERY and (10) POWER CUPS are among a number of others not to be overlooked in a really competitive race.

Favourites: (14) Damyang Janggun (3) Garak Gongwon (6) Daehanuimyeongseong (11) Four Star
Next Best: 4, 7, 12, 1, 10, 2, 5
Remainder: 8, 9, 13
Fast Starters: 6, 7, 12, 14

Seoul Race 6: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 14:05

Banker favourite of the day here in the shape of (2) SUPER BROAD. A Korean bred taking on mild imported opposition – who only have one win between them – and a really good winner last time, he’ll come from just off the early pace and it is hard to see him getting beaten. Those with the best chance of pulling off a surprise are (4) PRO MATHEUS, who has shown some glimpses in three starts to date and (5) DALLYEORA GANGJEOK, who has won plenty of money but never finished any better than 3rd. (1) CHIEF DRESSEL and (10) MADURYEONG are others who will be expecting to finish in the money.

Favourites: (2) Super Broad (4) Pro Matheus (5) Dallyeora Gangjeok (1) Chief Dressel
Next Best: 10, 8, 9, 7
Remainder: 3, 6, 11, 12, 13, 14
Fast Starters: 3, 10, 12

Busan Race 3: Class 4 / 1300M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 14:30

From Kim Young Kwan’s stable, (13) MATCH POWER makes his racecourse debut here having won a trial in good fashion last month. The Cowboy Cal colt will be expected to go very well. The main obstacle to his securing a debut victory is (9) WORLD QUEEN, a very reliable filly who will be on pace early and won’t let many past here. (12) ILLYUCHEON looks to have a win in her at some point and beat (11) BUYEONG TOWER as the pair raced 3rd and 4th over 1200M last month. (3) SEUNGNI PARK and the up in class (4) GOOD TOUCH are the others with claims.

Favourites: (13) Match Power (9) World Queen (12) Illyucheon (4) Good Touch
Next Best: 11, 3, 5, 7,
Remainder: 1, 2, 6, 8, 10, 14
Fast Starters: 6, 9, 11, 12

Seoul Race 7: Class 4 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 14:55

(3) GANGSEONG DAEGUK, a winner at domestic class 4 and 2nd in a similar race at the end of last month is the pick to claim this competitive affair. He’ll look to lead all the way. (2) BALIOS QUEEN and (7) BEONGAE BIHO both enter following decent 2nd places last time, the latter defeating (11) NEW VETERAN who can also be expected to go well here. (6) PYEONGCHONYEONGUNG has a pair of 2nd places among four previous outings and will surely get a win at some stage. He can come close here. (14) RAON TROY was disappointing last time out but can be given another chance here.

Favourites: (3) Gangseong Daeguk (7) Beongae Biho (6) Pyeongchonyeongung (2) Balios Queen
Next Best: 11, 14, 5, 1, 4
Remainder: 8, 9, 10, 12, 13
Fast Starters: 3, 5, 14

Seoul Race 8: Class 2 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 90 Million / 15:45

Much more competitive but the verdict goes the way of (10) SUN STRONG who has beaten (1) SUPER TANK over this distance before. The latter went on to pick up an 1800M victory of his own and is the main danger. Those two will look to come from off the pace, a pace that could be set by (2) GOLD MOUNTAIN and (6) ILJIN HWARANG, both of whom are capable of staying on. (8) CHASING DOLLARS is reunited with jockey Lee Chan Ho, who has gone well on him in the past and should be competitive here.

Favourites: (10) Sun Strong (1) Super Tank (8) Chasing Dollars (2) Gold Mountain
Next Best: 6, 4, 7, 5
Remainder: 3, 9
Fast Starters: 2, 3, 6

Busan Race 5: Class 2 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 16:10

Very open race and (1) HEUKGANGJA makes a quick return following a good 3rd place at a mile two weeks ago and likely to be among the favourites here. (9) MAGIC PARK actually beat Heukgangja over 1800M last month and will have backers to repeat while (3) MEDA GLORIA is up in class following one too many near misses at class 3. She may struggle to win here but should be close. (4) DREAM TOWER and (14) PROFESSOR SILVER raced 4th and 5th at 1900M last month and both can go well here. The wildcard is (11) SUMMIT MYEONGUN. One of the most highly thought-of three-year-olds at the beginning of last season, he hasn’t raced since the KRA Cup Mile almost exactly a year ago. He’s been gelded and came through a barrier trial very nicely earlier this month.

Favourites: (1) Heukgangja (9) Magic Park (11) Summit Myeongun (14) Professor Silver
Next Best: 3, 4, 5, 13
Remainder: 2, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12
Fast Starters: 1, 4, 9

Seoul Race 9: Class Open – The Gyeonggi Governor’s Cup (KOR G3) – 2000M / Allowance / KRW 300 Million / 16:40

This is practically a rerun of the Donga Ilbo Cup, which took place over 1800M on February 28th. All eight fillies & mares who too part that day line up again and with (6) PINOT NOIR having won that race by a full nine-lengths, there aren’t too many reasons to oppose her today. She will go back early and look to hit the front entering the home straight. The other market leaders are likely to be the ones who chased her home forlornly. (1) SMART TIME was 2nd, (3) X FILE was 3rd and (9) MENI MONEY was 4th. Also expected to go ok is (10) LUCKY MUSIC while among the three who didn’t go in the Donga Ilbo, (2) SHINE CLOVER perhaps has the best chance of an upset. But not much.

Favourites: (6) Pinot Noir (10) Lucky Music (9) Meni Money (1) Smart Time
Next Best: 3, 2, 8, 11
Remainder: 4, 5, 7
Fast Starters: 2, 7

Busan Race 6: Class 1 / 2000M / Handicap / KRW 105 Million / 17:05

The big money may have been in the previous event at Seoul but this is undoubtedly the race of the day. Grand Prix Stakes winner (1) BOLD KINGS makes his eagerly awaited four-year-old debut. He’s seven for seven but faces President’s Cup winner (7) TRIPLE NINE over the latter’s preferred distance of 2000M. It could go either way but Bold Kings has raised himself on every occasion so far and there’s no reason why he can’t do it again. It’s set to be a terrific contest. (3) HEBA ran Triple Nine very close last month and can’t be ruled out and while (5) GUMPO SKY could only manage 5th in that race, he was only beaten a neck in the Grand Prix and will surely give a good account of himself. He and Bold Kings will lead, Triple Nine will come from just behind. The evergreen (4) VIVA ACE can never be ruled out of the money.

Favourites: (1) Bold Kings (7) Triple Nine (5) Gumpo Sky (3) Heba
Next Best: 4, 2
Remainder: 6, 8
Fast Starters: 1, 5

Seoul Race 10: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 75 Million / 17:30

After the likely fireworks in the previous contest, this is rather more run of the mill. (1) GWANGBOK CHILSIP is favoured to get back to winning ways over this modest class 3 field. (7) BIG MOUNTAIN and (8) JANGSAN TAEYANG provide the sternest competition for the three-year-old while (2) READ AGAIN and (3) HWANGGEUM GASOK can’t be ruled out. However, the most likely outcome is Gwangbok Chilsip leading from gate to wire.

Favourites: (1) Gwangbok Chilsip (7) Big Mountain (8) Jangsan Taeyang (3) Hwanggeum Gasok
Next Best: 2, 6
Remainder: 4, 5, 9
Fast Starters: 1, 6, 9

Seoul Race 11: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 18:00

Really nice contest to finish with which sees four up and coming fillies taking each other on. (2) DONGHAE CHEONHA is unbeaten in two starts and was a dominating winner over this distance at the end of last month. (1) KATIE STAR has been beaten, at this distance at the end of January, but was impressive over 1000M three weeks ago and has very solid claims. The third filly is (6) JEWELRY PARK, an eye-catching six-length winner last month. (7) BEYOND LIMIT won three of her first four and while she has struggled a bit in her most recent two, can get back in form here especially if the others go too fast early. Aside from those it is a slightly older filly, (5) BIHOBARAM who looks next best while (8) SSONSALGACHI and (13) MUHANDOMA can also go well.

Favourites: (1) Katie Star (6) Jewelry Park (2) Donghae Cheonha (7) Beyond Limit
Next Best: 5, 8, 13, 4
Remainder: 3, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14
Fast Starters: 1, 2, 5, 6

Busan Friday: Race By Race Preview

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday and in a first for Korea, the meeting will be shown live on Sky Racing in Australia. There are big fields all day and there should be plenty to keep bettors occupied.

Busan Racecourse winning line

It’s Friday…It’s Busan!

See here for English racecards. A word about going. As of Thursday morning, the official going at Busan was “Good” with a track moisture content of 8%. There is currently a 20% chance of rain between now and Friday’s racing.

Race 1: Class 6 / 1000M / Allowance / KRW 40 Million / 11:40 (KST)

The first of four maiden races but there are two fillies who come in here having finished 2nd on their respective debuts last month. (8) ALBERT VICAR led for much of the way and beat four of these on February 26th and will be supported but the strong favourite will be (6) V DIVA. She was beaten by a good winner on her own debut, should have come for it and has a top jockey riding. She is the banker favourite of the day. (3) DONGNAM CHOEGO was 3rd behind Albert Vicar last month and finishing the stronger while (11) GANGJA TTEUNDA and (12) MISS CANBERRA both have plenty to find from their debuts but can improve. The one first-timer here is (4) WELL MADE. Her only sibling to race in Korea has won three of ten starts so far and she has a top jockey on board. It took her two goes to qualify and she was average in her last trial but can be competitive in this company.

Favourites: (6) V Diva (8) Albert Vicar (3) Dongnam Choego (12) Miss Canberra
Next Best: 11, 1, 4
Remainder: 2, 5, 7, 9, 10
Fast Start: 3, 6, 8, 11

Race 2: Class 6 / 1200M / Allowance / KRW 40 Million / 12:20 (KST)

South African trainer Bart Rice saddles (3) ACE GLORY and after a 3rd and a 2nd in his first two starts, the colt can go one better here. There are a couple of big dangers though. (7) DONGBANG BULPAE was beaten by V Diva (who we saw in race 1) and may benefit from the extra furlong today while (6) GIFTED SUN, beaten last time by Albert Vicar and Dongnam Choego (both also from race 1) can also improve. (10) NORTHERN TRACE showed development back from a spell last time and gets a top jockey today while (9) BAEKDU YEONGUNG was a slightly disappointing 6th when well backed a month ago and can be given another chance. There are three debut-makers. (12) KKEUTPAN HERO won a barrier trial at the end of last month and may be considered. (4) BEOLMAUI SIN is owned by one of Busan’s most successful owners and while indifferent in trials, will also have supporters.

Favourites: (3) Ace Glory (7) Dongbang Bulpae (6) Gifted Sun (12) Kkeutpan Hero
Next Best: 4, 9, 10, 1
Remainder: 2, 5, 8, 11, 13, 14
Fast Start: 3, 7, 8

Race 3: Class 6 / 1200M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 13:00

Thomas Gillespie’s (8) MAJOR SLAM was indifferent on debut but much improved her second appearance last month when she ran 3rd over this distance. She can continue her development here. She’ll be the favourite but (4) TRIPLE QUEENS looks to be on the up as well, beating a couple of these when running 4th on March 4th. More experienced is (7) OH DAEBAK, yet to win in ten but capable of at least matching her best of 4th in this company. Also with experience is (12) VICAR SARANG – he’s beaten Oh Daebak recently and can challenge at the business end again. (1) KARIN JJANG, (2) KWAEHAN EUTTEUM and (10) RED YOUNG MYEONGUN look the other ones with claims among a weak field.

Favourites: (8) Major Slam (4) Triple Queens (7) Oh Daebak (12) Vicar Sarang
Next Best: 10, 2, 1, 11
Remainder: 3, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14
Fast Start: 3, 11, 14

Race 4: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 13:40

The final maiden event sees (3) COT WING come in looking ready to win after coming closer and closer in recent starts. Last time he finished strongly only to be beaten less than a length when running 2nd at this distance. Behind him in 5th in that race was (4) ARCH and he will be looking to get closer. Another who looks ready to win is (13) EOROK, who scored a career best 3rd place last time. Bart Rice’s (12) SILENT LAGO was a much improved 3rd on what was her second start at the beginning of this month and further improvement is possible while (1) OLYMPIA QUEEN and (14) YEONGGWANGUI FORE are others for whom a maiden win would not be a total surprise; the latter may look to go forward in a race with not much early speed.

Favourites: (3) Cot Wing (12) Silent Lago (13) Eorok (4) Arch
Next Best: 1, 14, 10
Remainder: 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11
Fast Start: 3, 11, 14

Race 5: Class 5 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 14:25

(11) SANTA GLORIA comes in following a creditable 3rd of 6 in the Gold Circle Trophy – a Korean Oaks trial – at the beginning of this month and that is going to make her quite an attractive proposition here She is likely to get forward early. This is a tough race though with all but one trying the distance for the first time. (9) ALSO NUMBER ONE was a winner at this class over 1200M at the start of the month and must be respected. He beat Peter Wolsley’s (10) JIBONG JILJU in that race. That colt won his first two early last summer before being out for six months and the step up in distance may be what he needs. (4) BAEDARI HAENGUN has finished 3rd in five of her seven starts to date and there’s no reason why she can’t do that again. (14) V MAN got a slightly unfortunate trip when disappointing at odds-on on March 6th and can be given another chance today. (1) YOUARE THE CAPTAIN and (12) THE STARS are others with claims.

Favourites: (11) Santa Gloria (9) Also Number One (14) V Man (10) Jibong Jilju
Next Best: 4, 1, 12, 7
Remainder: 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 13
Fast Start: 9, 11

Race 6: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 14:15

The first event of the day open to foreign-bred horses and (14) GASI GONGJU was a winner on debut over 1000M in February and has every chance of following up here. Main danger looks to be (5) SEUNGNI UNCLE MO who made all to record his maiden win over 1200M last time and will surely try similar today. Much more experienced is the Korean-bred (12) MACH CHAMP, whose best recent work has been at 1000M but could also go well at 1200M in this company. Thomas Gillespie’s debut-maker (13) GREAT SONG won a trial in good order last month and can be considered while (8) AMAZING DAEJI doesn’t look a candidate to win but can find the money.

Favourites: (14) Gasi Gongju (5) Seungni Uncle Mo (13) Great Song (12) Mach Champ
Next Best: 8, 1, 7
Remainder 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 10, 11
Fast Start: 2, 5, 7, 12, 14

Race 7: Class 4 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 15:05 (SIN)

Another race open to foreign-bred runners but the slight pick could well be a Korean bred. (3) FIRST KING is up in class after his second win on February 28th and looks very nicely in here to get a third. Yet to score is (5) FURIOUS RUNNER but the Aussie bred colt beat four of these when running 2nd over 1200M last time. He’ll go forward and while he carries plenty, he must be strongly considered. (13) SSI F STAR was 4th first-up after a spell last time and should have come on for it and can go better. (4) SWEET MYEONGUN and (10) GIMAKIN JILJU have claims on the places while improvement will be expected of (9) EURI EURI.

Favourites: (3) First King (5) Furious Runner (13) Ssi F Star (4) Sweet Myeongun
Next Best: 9, 10, 8
Remainder: 1, 2, 6, 7, 11 12
Fast Start: 5, 6

Race 8: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 16:00 (SIN)

(7) MIRACLE IJI has raced just four times and looks the one to beat here following a solid 2nd place over a mile last time out. He tries two turns for the first time and that should suit him just fine. Also a first-timer at this distance is Kim Young Kwan’s (13) BAEKDU. He races for the first time this year but finished 2015 with back to back victories, the most recent of them at a mile and he can go very well. Another winner at a mile last time is (3) GIANT HOLD and he is up in class along with (2) SAENGIL GIPPEUM. Both of them can go well with the latter likely to lead early on. (5) SAND KING was 3rd, a length behind Miracle Iji last start and must be respected while (6) LEGEND POWER is also capable of placing while (9) TOP SPRING did exactly that at lengthy odds a couple of weeks ago.

Favourites: (7) Miracle Iji (13) Baekdu (2) Saengil Gippeum (3) Giant Hold
Next Best: 5, 6, 9, 10
Remainder: 1, 4, 8, 11, 12
Fast Start: 2, 5

Race 9: Class 3 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 16:30 (SIN)

A very open race here with any number having claims. Five of them raced each other over this distance on February 26th though and most of the favourites are likely to be among them. That race was won by one of this year’s hottest three-year-old prospects, Banjiui Jewang. He of course is not here today but (9) SHARP GALE got closest to him that day, just beating (6) SAENA out of 2nd place by a neck. That was Saena’s fourth 3rd place from her last five starts. (2) JANGGUNBONG was a further half-length back in 4th and he should be looking to at least match that today. The real disappointment in that race was (11) WIRE TO. The colt was found to have been suffering a respiratory tract issue that day and while he did win his previous two, punters may be exercising caution today. As for those who didn’t run in that race, (5) MR. KELLY is the pick. He ran 2nd to Wire To in January but has beaten both Sharp Gale and Saena in recent starts and could very well beat them all here.

Favourites: (5) Mr. Kelly (9) Sharp Gale (6) Saena (2) Janggunbong
Next Best: 11, 1, 12, 7
Remainder: 3, 4, 8, 10, 13, 14
Fast Start: 2, 4

Race 10: Class 2 / 1200M / Allowance / KRW 88 Million / 18:00 (KST)

Sent off at long odds-on, (7) PERDIDO POMEROY went down to his first defeat on his first try at this class last month. He drops down to 1200M today and runs slap-bang into (2) FRENCH BOY, who has won five of eight so far and steps up in class today. These two are the market leaders but it is Perdido Pomeroy who is favoured to get back to winning ways. They’ll both go forward as will plenty of others. As for those others, eight of them faced each other over 1200M on February 12th. (11) SINHEUNG GOSU came out on top of them that day in 3rd but was indifferent on his reappearance a couple of weeks ago. Instead, (4) CHEOGANG BULPAE, (5) ACE CHEONBOK and (8) WORLD LOVE are likely to be favoured to chase home the favourites.

Favourites: (7) Perdido Pomeroy (2) French Boy (5) Ace Cheonbok (4) Choegang Bulpae
Next Best: 8, 13, 11, 12
Remainder: 1, 3, 6, 9, 10, 14
Fast Start: 2, 4, 7, 8, 11

The weekend’s racing in Korea gets underway on Friday with a ten-race card at Busan. Busan will also hold a card on Sunday while Seoul runs Saturday and Sunday.

See below for notes on simulcast races 4-10:

Race 4: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 13:40

Top trainer and jockey combination on (1) CHALLANHAN ACE, who has come close on both his last two starts and is favoured to make all and score here. (5) GORYEOUI KKUM was 2nd on his debut, well beaten by a good winner but ahead of three of these rivals and can be competitive. One of those beaten ones was (3) SMART KING, who has finished 4th of 5th in each of his five starts to date and can look to improve. (7) TAMNA CHEONHA and (10) RAON BENTREE are the others to look out for. (6) NOBLE WARRIOR makes just his second start after a fill six months out but will obviously need this race.

Favourites: (1) Challanhan Ace (5) Goryeoui Kkum (3) Smart King (7) Tamna Cheonha

Race 5: Class 5 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 14:25

(6) MAD POWER was a good winner on debut last month and while up in both class and distance today, will be among the front-runners here. (9) GOLD SUN and (7) HUIMANG QUEEN were both 4th on their first tries at this level on February 14th and may also be considered; the former was beaten by (14) BYEOLMURI and that one too can overcome the outside gate to be involved. More experienced is (5) SUNDAY ROYAL, who was only beaten a nose having almost made all over 1300M on February 19th and must be respected today.

Favourites: (6) Mad Power (7) Huimang Queen (5) Sunday Royal (9) Gold Sun

Race 6: Class 5 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:15

A small field but a number have chances. They’re headed by (4) BLACK TETRA, a two-length winner on debut at the end of February and who is up in class here. Going forward out of the gate will be (2) MAGIC LINE and that one is the main danger; he was just beaten a neck over this distance last start and will be strong once more. (6) MAYA COUNTRY has looked much improved since returning from six months out and can go well. (3) DAMYANG CHEONSA and (8) KKEUTPAN JILJU are also ones likely to attract backers.

Favourites: (4) Black Tetra (2) Magic Line (6) Maya Country (3) Damyang Cheonsa

Race 7: Class 4 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 16:05

Another open contest with (7) BRAVO MARINE looking ready to win after a 2nd and three 3rd place finishes in his four starts to date. Main danger (10) SUPER CHEOLIN is already a winner and while he was beaten by (2) MAERYEOK DEONGEORI on January 31st, he can overturn that form today. (9) IRON TRAIN finished behind both of them that day but back up at a mile here, a distance he won over on Christmas Day, improvement is expected. (5) ACE SINHWA, 5th in that Christmas race and a creditable 6th at 1800M last start, may also be involved.

Favourites: (7) Bravo Marine (10) Super Cheolin (2) Maeryeok Deongeori (9) Iron Train

Race 8: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 17:00

(5) TOHAMSAN steps up in class following his second win in three starts; a five-length triumph over this distance a month ago. He led almost the whole way that day and has every chance of being successful with similar tactics today. (6) WONIL ROOKIE, half-brother of a winner of some of Korea’s biggest races, returned from eight months out on February 12 to beat (3) GUMPO MIREU by a neck. That was a well-run race and they both step up in class too. Both are likely to also go forward early. If we are looking for something to beat those likely pace-setters, (1) NURI BULPAE is the best contender. He was a class and distance winner a month ago. (4) POKPUNG SINHWA, disappointing last start, can be given another chance here.

Favourites: (5) Tohamsan (6) Wonil Rookie (3) Gumpo Mireu (1) Nuri Bulpae

Race 9: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 17:30

Two standouts here but (4) MAIN STAY is the pick on his first try at this distance. He beat three of these over a mile on February 19th and should have little difficulty with the extra furlong. The main danger is (7) SAEMSONNEEUNENERGY, who comes in following back to back 2ndplaces at this distance. He will go right back early but has a strong finish. (2) RISING BRAVO was 2nd to Main Stay last month and can push him again while (8) USEUNGIJI, who didn’t go well in that race, can improve today. Wildcard is (1) PILKKOT, down in class after being out of his depth at class 2 but a proven winner at this level.

Favourites: (4) Main Stay (7) Saemsonneeunenergy (2) Rising Bravo (8) Useungiji

Race 10: Class 2 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 18:00 (SIN)

Good race this but (2) APPROACH should have too much. (9) CHEONJI PARK was 4th behind Approach last time and while the weights are further in his favour this time, he will have to improve to overturn that form. A danger is (8) DIFERENT DIMENSION, who looked lively running 2nd when back from a lengthy spell and tries this distance for the first time. (4) SAEROUN BEOPCHIK won a weak class 3 in January and followed it up with a 2nd place to get bumped up in class here but needs to find plenty. (1) WILD BURNING and (7) NOT ANYMORE are the others with hopes of placing.

Favourites: (2) Approach (8) Diferent Dimension (9) Cheonji Park (4) Saeroun Beopchik

SROA Trophy – Full Preview Of First Korean Graded Race of 2016

Sunday sees the first Graded race of 2016 at Seoul in the shape of the local Group 3 Seoul Owners’ Association Trophy. A full field of sixteen will line up for the 1200M sprint.

img_20160131_162313.jpg

Global Fusion was the rather unlikely winner of the Segye Ilbo Cup in January

Six of them ran in the Segye Ilbo Cup on January 31st with the first two home that day – Global Fusion and Always Winner coming home as an 1800/1 exacta that day. This time there are set to be strong challenges from the likes of Sotong Sidae, Power City and Magic Dancer in what is set to be a nice competitive race.

Here is a full rundown of the field. All are Korean bred and all will carry 57kg with fillies and mares receiving a 2kg allowance (Name [Pedigree] Age Sex (Starts/1st/2nd/3rd) – Jockey):

SROA Trophy (KOR G3) – Seoul Racecourse – 1200M – March 13, 2015 (16:40)

1. Impetus [Exploit – Miss Stravinsky] 6 H (30/7/3/8) – Jo Jae Ro
4th behind Seonbong last start over 1400M, he is a solid class 1 competitor and has good closing speed. Generally slow away, the minor money is a realistic aim here.

2. Yaho Sky Cat [Peace Rules – The Relentless Cat] 4 G (8/4/1/0) – Djordje Perovic
He’s won 4 of 8 so far but yet to strike any higher than class 3. A disappointment in the Segye Ilbo Cup, where he was unable to get forward early, he has plenty to find here. Needs a good start.

3. Magic Dancer [Forest Camp – Wildly Magic] 6 H (25/10/4/2) – Jo Sung Gon
This former big Stakes winner has perhaps seen better days but landed a creditable 4th in the Segye Ilbo, his 2nd race back after a spell. He got forward early and gave little away late on and that performance puts him in contention here. A chance.

4. Sun Lordly [Vicar – Stormcloudrising] 7 M (32/6/4/2) – Hwang Soon Do
She’s only raced four times since winning the JRA Trophy last May and has shown very little. Even the jockey booking suggest she is a big outsider.

5. Global Fusion [Menifee – Morning Red Sky] 7 G (36/7/3/6) – Yoo Seung Wan
The 66/1 winner of the Segye Ilbo Cup, lfying home from well off the pace to get up by a neck. Similar tactics are expected here but while a bit more respect is due today, the odds are against a repeat.

6. Sotong Sidae [Gold Money – Myeonggauihuye] 5 G (28/7/4/6) – Park Byeong Yun
He may end up as favourite. It’s been a long time since he was entered in a sprint but he is one of the top horses at the track. The Grand Prix distance was too much for him last start but he comes in fresh today. He goes back early and has very solid closing speed. A real chance.

7. Haemaru [Vicar – Forest Flower] 5 G (24/7/3/4) – Choi Bum Hyun
A consistent placer in 2015, he hasn’t started this term quite so well and was disappointing at 1400M last start. Ideally would be ridden closer to the front today – he ran a close 2nd when put into contention early over 1400M in December and improvement is possible here.

8. Gumanseok [Vicar – Perfect Storm] 7 G (42/11/6/8) – Lee Chan Ho
Came back into form with a pair of unexpected victories in December and January but didn’t go well in a tough race three weeks ago. Capable at sprint distances in the past, he should settle in midfield and makes for an interesting outsider.

9. Goldholic [Volponi – Lovely Memories] 4 C (21/6/4/4 – Lee Joon Chel
Mixes in elite company for the first time following three wins in his last five starts. Led from gate to wire over 1800M last time out and while it will be harder to get to the front here, he shouldn’t be too far away. This is a big step up though.

10. Power City [Archer City Slew – Power Bull] 5 G (17/9/2/2) – Park Tae Jong
3rd behind Global Fusion and Always Winner in the Segye Ilbo last month, he is a proven big race winner. Likely to settle in the middle of the field,he has strong finishing speed and he will be one of the favourites.

11. Always Winner [Always Winner – Hallat’Eukkeup] 4 G (15/4/4/2) – Kim Dong Soo
Just beaten a neck by Global Fusion in the Segye Ilbo and three lengths clear of Power City, that was Always’s Winner’s first try at the top level. He led almost the whole way that day and will try similar today. A chance he will get home in front this time.

12. Seonbong [Duality – Megabuck Gal] 4 C (17/6/6/0) – Moon Jung Kyun
6th in the Segye Ilbo Cup having raced prominently early. He may not get to the front today but he should be close by, has a good turn of speed and is capable of going well.

13. Best Guy [Didyme – Madam Winette] 6 G (11/5/5/1) – Ji Ha Ju
He’s only raced eleven times and has never finished worse than 3rd, winning on five occasions. Facing this level of competition for the first time, he does have the fastest time at this distance of any of those who go here and while the odds are this will be his first time outside the placings, he’s not to be ruled out.

14. Singyu Gangja [Mckenzie Pass – Tamna Bibari] 4 G (16/6/4/3) – Lim Gi Won
Another one up in class and allowed to take his chance following a class 2 win over 1400M last month,. He made all that day and will try to get forward here. He will be one of the outsiders though.

15. Raon Morris [Yankee Victor – Thunder By Night] 5 H (16/6/3/2) – Ham Wan Sik
Winner of last year’s Selangor Turf Club Trophy, he followed up with a 2nd place over this distance at class 1. Not especially competitive in two starts since, he will need to find a bit more here

16. Sun Burster [Officer – Coin D’Or] 4 C (11/6/2/2) – Yuri Takahashi
An up and coming one, he’s won six of eleven to date and came from well off the pace to snatch 2nd in a quick race over 1300M at the end of January. He’ll likely be patiently away again to day from the outside gate and is another interesting outsider.

Busan Friday: Race By Race Preview

This Sunday sees the first Korean Graded Race of 2016 in the shape of the Seoul Owners’ Association Trophy. Sixteen runners will come under orders for the six-furlong sprint and we’ll have a full preview on Saturday. The weekend’s racing, however, gets underway on Friday with a ten-race card at Busan.

Dynamic Busan!

English racecards can be found here

The first race is at 11:40 and the last is at 18:00. Races 4-10 will be simulcast and below are brief notes on each of those races (times local Korean time):

Race 4: Class 5 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 13:40

(9) YUSEONG STAR was 3rd over class and distance a month ago and is one of a number of contenders for this very competitive race. (7) BIGBANG BIG was beaten into 2nd by (6) MEGA HEART in January but overturned that form last time and should be involved once again. Another danger is (3) PENTA HEELS, up in class following a maiden win over 1000M on February 19th. That was a much improved performance and she has potential for more. (1) UNFLAGGING HEART and (12) MOMENT are the others to consider.

Favourites: (9) Yuseong Star (3) Penta Heels (7) Bigbang Bid (1) Unflagging Heart

Race 5: Class 4 / 1000M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 14:25

(5) THE QUEEN has two wins from four outings. She made all to win over this distance in a very quick time last start and despite bbeing up in class here, will be hard to beat. (2) DAEHOYEOJANGGUN comes in following a strong of 2nd and 3rd place finishes, generally behind decent horses and can place again while (12) ARION METAL showed some promise in two 4th place finishes in his first two starts last autumn and returns from a spell here. (3) GREEN MIREU, 2nd at the distance last time, can also go well.

Favourites: (5) The Queen (2) Daehoyeojanggun (12) Arion Metal (3) Green Mireu

Race 6: Class 4 / 1200M Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 15:15

Each week at this time of the year, we mention that we must pay close attention to Korean bred horses running in races open to foreign bred horses as they will usually be stronger. With that in mind, (2) SUPER STORM and (9) JIBONG STAR are the ones to watch. The former gets the verdict although the latter did beat four of these over 1000M last month. Another pair of Korean breds, (4) KKEUTPAN DAEJANG and (8) JAYU DAERO are next best. Among the debut-makers, (12) GUMALLI, from the track’s top stable was quick in trials and looks the best although (10) PHILIP AND GIRAFFE, encouraging on debut, can be given another chance despite a disappointing second start.

Favourites: (2) Super Storm (9) Jibong Star (12) Gumalli (8) Jayu Daero

Race 7: Class 5 / 1300M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 16:05

Three come in here off a win last start. (3) RAON SANTOS and (4) MINE are both up in class after maiden wins but both were emphatic enough to suggest they will be  competitive at this level. The former is favoured at this stage. The third is (1) WONIL ROSE. She was a class and distance winner on February 19th by a nose and while she does carry an extra 3kg today, she can be competitive once more. Back in 4th behind Wonil Rose that day was (6) DANCING CAT; she has a weight advantage today which will see her with plenty of support to overturn that form. (9) SEONGHO JEONGSANG is yet to win in ten but has been 2nd on three occasions including last time out over this distance.

Favourites: (3) Raon Santos (1) Wonil Rose (6) Dancing Cat (4) Mine

Race 8: Class 3 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 17:00

(11) SMART GENTLEMAN is up in class following three consecutive wins but there is little to fear here and he could very well make if four in a row today. (2) SEORABEOL GONGJU narrowly dodged the winner’s circle in four short-priced outings but nevertheless finds herself up at class 3 today and will probably conspire to be narrowly defeated once again. (12) YESURI MYEONGUN was disappointing last time at 1400M but has beaten plenty of these at this distance already this year and will beat plenty today too. (8) TANK POWER can go better dropped back to 1200M today while (6) SMILE QUEEN could only manage 6th on her first try at this class at the end of January and can go better here. She finished ahead of (13) GRACE who was a winner at class and distance in January.

Favourites: (11) Smart Gentleman (2) Seorabeol Gongju (12) Yesuri Myeongun (6) Smile Queen

Race 9: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 17:30

A class and distance winner, beating four who go here, on his last start, (6) DONGBANG DAERO does carry an extra 4kg today but is still capable of making it two in a row. (10) BADA DOSI was 2nd that day and given the shift in weights, may well be favourite. Another danger is (2) SINHANG. He’s won two from five before today and tries two turns for the first time. He will go forward from the gate and if he stays, he has solid claims. (4) NAGASINDA was 4th behind Sinhang last time and should be looking to at least match that here. The very experienced (11) STAR WARP is unlikely to be winning this but could sneak into a place.

Selections: (6) Dongbang Daero (10) Bada Dosi (2) Sinhang (4) Nagasinda

Race 10: Class 2 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 18:00

An up-and-comer, (13) TONGIL SIDAE is up in class following his second win in four starts on February 14th and can take full advantage of joint-bottom weight on his first try at this distance today. He should be too good for these. The rest are all going to need to find improvement in recent starts (4) HEUKGANGJA, likely to join Tongil Sidae in an early lead, looks the best of them with (2) POKPUNG CHOEGANG, (8) SINHEUNG GOSU and (11) PUREUN ACE others who can go well.

Favourites: (13) Tongil Sidae (4) Heukgangja (8) Sinheung Gosu (11) Pureun Ace

Sunday Filly Classic trials: Full Preview

The current cream of the domestic bred three-year-old filly crop are in action at both Seoul and Busan on Sunday with the running of a pair of early season classic trials, the Sports Seoul Cup in the capital and the Gold Circle Trophy on the south coast.

Ottug Ottugi

Ottug Ottugi goes in Busan’s early Oaks trial

Unsurprisingly the fields are small but nevertheless interesting. Seoul on Sunday runs 11 races from 10:50 to 18:00 while Busan runs 6 from 13:00 to 17:05.

English Racecards can be found here. Entry to the racecourse is free for all punters on Sunday to compensate for the loss of four races due to the weather (among a number of issues) last Sunday.

Here’s a full rundown of the fields in both trials. All are three-year-old fillies and all will carry 55kg.

Name [Pedigree] (Starts/1st/2nd/3rd) Trainer – Jockey

GC Trophy (Special) – Busan Racecourse – 1400M – March 6, 2016 (16:10)

1. My Alice [Limitless Bid – Allie’s Premo (Alex’s Pal)] (3/2/1/0) JB Mun – Ikuyasu Kurakane
A possible front-runner here, she’s done little wrong so far although is tried at the distance for the first time. Four-length winner last start.

2. Yuseong Tiger [Discreet Cat – Comarillo (Deputy Commander)] (4/2/1/0) DS Bang – Kim Dong Young
The most likely to be happy to sit back and let others lead, she was an easy five-length winner last time over 1300M and can go close.

3. Steal The Show Why [Whywhywhy – Steal The Show (Cat Thief)] (8/2/2/1) KY Baik – You Hyun Myung
A four-length winner at class 5 over 1300M last time beating one who went on to win very smartly on Friday, she will sit just off any early pace.

4. Hoseungjibyeok [Didyme – Everything Nice (Elusive Quality)] (3/3/0/0) BE Kang – Song Keong Yun
Unbeaten and a class 4 winner at this distance beating the well-thought of Evangeline last time. She will want to settle in midfield and will be second favourite.

5. Ottug Ottugi [Forest Camp – Main Objective (Lion Heart)] (6/4/1/0) YK Kim – Oh Kyoung Hoan
This is the favourite, however her only previous try at 1400M – the Breeders’ Cup in Seoul, she did not stay on for this distance. We are three months on now and we will give her another chance. She sets the pace and she is the favourite.

6. Santa Gloria [Menifee – Pupil (Unbridled)] (4/1/0/1) KY Baik – Pasquale Borelli
The outsider of the field, she has been beaten by Yuseing Tiger and is yet to perform at anything higher than class 6. The only one for whom a win would be a big shock.

Sports Seoul Cup (Listed) – Seoul Racecourse – 1400M – March 6, 2016 (16:40)

1. Chang Se [Forest Camp – Daecheonpung (Fiercely)] (7/3/2/1) JW Park – Lee Hyeon Jong
She’s won three of seven and beat imported opposition at class 4 last time. Tries the distance for the first time but will stay. Could lead and in the absence of Waikiki is the likely favourite.

2. La Reine [Menifee – Souther Splendour (Southern Halo)] (2/1/0/0) YJ Choi – Jo Sung Gon
A winner on debut in an event where all were previously unraced, she showed nothing next up and is an outsider here.

3. Sidaeyeowang [Vicar – Fier Time (Fiercely)] (4/2/0/0) JW Park – Djordje Perovic
Two wins and two fourths and has been beaten by Meni Money, she will need to find something here. Likely to sit behind the early lead.

4. Ujuchoegang [Creek Cat – Sonoray (Gone West)] (3/0/0/0) HS Seo – Bang Choon Sik
An outsider, she;s one of two yet to win and it’s hard to see her doing so here.

5. Meni Music [Menifee – Morning Music (Songandaprayer)] (7/3/1/1) YG Park – Park Eul Woon
At one time believed to be the pick of the crop, she has stuttered as the competition has grown stronger. Goes at this distance for the first time, she will probably look to lead but others will be favoured.

6. Argo Queen [Creek Cat – Lunar Colony (A.P. Indy)] (6/0/1/1) BJ Choi – Kim Dong Soo
Along with Ujuchoegang, this one hasn’t wn and she probably won’t here either. Still at class 6 and not much to recommend.

7. Daehan Cheonwang [Forest Camp – Seonju Jangsu (Happy Jazz Band)] (5/3/1/0) HJ Bae – Lim Gi Won
Can be forgiven her most recent try in January, she is a winner at this distance at class 5. She will sit just behind any early pace and may be considered.

8. Waikiki [Pico Central – Wyvern (Didyme)] (6/2/2/0) JH Ha – Park Byeong Yun

Seoul Saturday: Race By Race Preview

Has Spring sprung? Last Sunday saw the final two races at Seoul called off due to snow and while at Busan on Friday, the most useful bit of gear would have been a canoe and paddle such was the rain, temperatures all of a sudden are in the high teens. The rain is set to hit Seoul in time for Saturday’s card but there will still be plenty going on.

20160302_125249.jpg

Just two days previously, this was under half a foot of snow – could be underwater on Saturday

There are 11 races from 10:50am to 18:00. English racecards can be found here. See below for comments on overseas simulcast races 4-11:

Race 4: Class 5 / 1000M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 12:00 (SIN)

All filly & mare affair first up and (9) KATIE STAR is strongly favoured to get her second win in three starts. A good winner at this distance on debut, she was 2nd over 1200M on her first try at this level at the end of January and will surely go one better this time. (2) NEW NANCHO has a 5th and a pair of 4ths in three tries at this level and will benefit from the in-form Djordje Perovic in the saddle. (7) SAMJEONG GUARDIAN disappointed on her first try at this class but gets another chance here. She finished behind (1) NAREUSYA QUEEN last start and that one, along with (4) SUNDAY DREAMER are the others to look out for.

Favourites: (9) Katie Star (2) New Nancho (7) Samjeong Guardian (1) Nareusya Queen

Race 5: Class 5 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 12:50 (SIN)

(2) DONGCHONUI GUY comes in looking for a hat-trick of victories and he can do it but it won’t be easy. (1) DAECHEON FOCUS, a winner at this distance already, looks to be the main danger and these two up and comers will both look to get forward straight from the gate. (7) SWEEP ICHEON is yet to win in twelve outings but enters having come close recently while (4) OUR CAT generally runs at five furlongs and looks an interesting entry here. (8) PERFECT BIC C and (9) CLEANUP SEED are others to take into consideration.

Favourites: (2) Dongchonui Guy (1) Daecheon Focus (7) Sweep Icheon (9) Cleanup Seed

Race 6: Class 5 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 13:40 (SIN)

Another competitive affair with (7) GEUMA BALIOS under champion jockey Moon Se Young set to be slightly favoured following a good 2nd place last start. He tries this distance for the first time while (1) CURRICLE didn’t go well in one previous attempt but comes in after a strong 3rd over 1300M in January and can be competitive. (3) WHIZ RUN and (5) GWANGSOK can improve on recent starts while (10) RECKLESS, 4th behind Geuma Balios at odds in excess of 200/1 last time, will be much shorter today and could compete for a place.

Favourites: (7) Geuma Balios (1) Curricle (3) Whiz Run (10) Reckless

Race 7: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 14:30 (SIN)

Up in class after back to back wins but shrewdly entered against imported opposition, there is little reason to oppose (5) SUPER START. He’s the only one of these with winning experience; he has led gate to wire in both those recent victories and will look to do so again. If we are to oppose him then we need to find up and comers with potential to improve. (1) KAIZEN FORCE and (13) KODIAK LOVE come closest to fulfilling that requirement while (12) TOTAL WALKER and (14) SMART HULK may also receive some backing.

Favourites: (5) Super Start (13) Kodiak Love (1) Kaizen Force (14) Smart Hulk

Race 8: Class 4 / 1700M / Handicap / KRW 60 Million / 15:30 (SIN)

(8) WINNERS GLORY is on the Classic trail having been 3rd in the Champion Juvenile race last November. He got his three-year-old season off to a solid start with a comfortable win over 1400M last month and races around two turns for the first time today. He is the favourite. (6) AYERS ROCK beat (5) KING CREEK CAT as they ran 2nd and 5th over this distance on February 13th and those two look to be the main dangers here, the latter having already won twice at this distance. (4) CLEAN UP KING was last on his first try at 1700M in January but can go better today while (7) STRONG FIELD , returning for the first time since November, is also to be considered.

Favourites: (8) Winners Glory (6) Ayers Rock (5) King Creek Cat (4) Clean Up King

Race 9: Class 3 / 1700M / Handicap / KRW 75 Million / 16:00 (SIN)

This race also sees one of those on the Classic trail as the top pick. (3) CHEONJI STORM didn’t go well in the Juvenile Championship race despite being very well backed. He has a win and a 2nd in two starts since, both at 1400M and takes on two turns for the first time today. He is likely to go forward and should he stay on, he has an excellent chance. To beat him, the others will all need to find something above their recent form with (1) DAEGEONI and (5) SEONUP looking the most likely. (2) LUCKY HEART, another front-runner, and (6) ROYAL VICTORY are others with claims on a place.

Favourites: (3) Cheonji Storm (5) Seonup (1) Daegeoni (2) Lucky Heart

Race 10: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 75 Million / 16:30 (SIN)

(6) MISO WANGJA has two wins and two 2nd places from four outings prior to today and while this is his first try at 1800M, he was quick when only beaten a neck over 1700M at the end of January and in this company is very difficult to oppose. He will be the strong favourite. It’s tough to make a case for the others but (7) THE SSEN CHAMP has won at the distance before and can be in the hunt while (4) HUGHES ROAD is inconsistent but should be placing here. (5) JINMYEONG GANGHO and (9) CONCORDE II are others who can be competitive.

Selections: (6) Miso Wangja (7) The Ssen Champ (4) Hughes Road (9) Concorde II

Race 11: Class 2 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 90 Million / 17:00 (SIN)

Open contest to finish with, we’ll go with (7) RAON RUSA after he beat three of these when getting his second consecutive 2nd place in January. It’s not with a huge amount of enthusiasm though as there are plenty of others capable. One of those he beat last time is (9) CHEONYEONUIGIPPEUM, who has won at the distance before and has a significant weight advantage. (3) GUMPO YEOJANGGUN also looks nicely in and can improve on recent starts while (1) HAERANGANGJA and (13) LUCKY LIGHT should appreciate the opportunity for a crack at this distance. Open race and there could be some value to find.

Favourites: (7) Raon Rusa (9) Cheonyeonuigippeum (13) Lucky Light (1) Haerangangja

Busan Friday: Race By Race Preview

After last week’s snow induced chaos, it is finally warming up on the peninsula. Racing gets underway Friday with a ten-race card at Busan.

Busan Racecourse

It’s Busan Friday time

There are a total of 10 races with the first at 11:40 and the last at 18:00. There is also a pony racing card on Jeju Island. English racecards are available here.

Races 4-10 will be simulcast to overseas. Here are full notes on those races along with probable favourites:

Race 4: Class 6 / 1300M / Allowance / KRW 40 Million / 13:40

(4) GOLDEN KINGS was 2nd on debut at the end of January and should surely be going one better against a moderate set of fillies and mares here. (3) CAPTAIN CHANCE has picked up minor prize money in each of her last four outings and can be close again. She finished behind (5) HURRICANE FORCE, who managed a shock 2nd place over this distance on February 12th having previously shown no discernible talent but must be given a chance here. (8) HWASEONG ACE and (2) IGIPPEUM GEUDAERO look the best of a less than impressive rest.

Favourites: (4) Golden Kings (3) Captain Chance (8) Hwaseong Ace (5) Hurricane Force

Race 5: Class 5 / 1200M / Allowance / KRW 40 Million / 14:25

(1) LADY CHAMP, coming in following a 2nd and a 3rd in her most recent two outings could be the one to score in an open race. (8) SANGSEUNG MULGYEOL was a class and distance winner last start, beating (6) JIBONG JILJU. The latter was returning from seven months out, raced like he needed it and should be much closer today. (10) ALSO NUMBER ONE is yet to strike in eight starts and while a well-beaten 2nd behind a good winner last month, can be dangerous here. (7) LOAD CELL, up in class today following back to back 2nd place finishes is the other one to watch.

Favourites: (1) Lady Champ (6) Jibong Jilju (10) Also Number One (8) Sangseung Mulgyeol

Race 6: Class 5 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:15

A winner on his debut in debut and close in three subsequent starts, Bart Rice’s (7) SHORT STOP looks the standout here. He was beaten into 4th place by (1) COOL RUN on his last start but should overturn that form today. There are a couple of dangers. (9) ROCKET BLADE was an easy winner on debut in January and while he found it tougher on his first try at this class on February 19th, can go better here. (2) WONIL ACE was 2nd over 1300M last start and should be close while (8) WARRIOR KING is inconsistent but goes well on his day. (6) HWANHUIUI BYEOL didn’t perform on his first try at this class but can improve.

Favourites: (7) Short Stop (9) Rocket Blade (2) Wonil Ace (1) Cool Run

Race 7: Class 4 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 16:05

(4) MUJEOKUI SAMSON, from Kim Young Kwan’s stable hasn’t shown a lot in three starts so far, is one of a number who may appreciate the opportunity at this distance. The stable means he will be favourite. (6) GANGHAN NAMJA has raced at a mile before and while it didn’t go well, he is a two-time winner over 1400M and will have backers. (3) OHHWAMA and (8) GIANT HOLD raced indifferently together over 1400M in January but both could improve today as could (9) AFLEET CORREDOR, a stablemate of Mujeokui Samson. (11) GIMAKIN JILJU, racing for the first time since a disappointing effort on Christmas Day, could deliver at good odds.

Favourites: (4) Mujeokui Samson (6) Ganghan Namja (11) Gimakin Jilju (8) Giant Hold

Race 8: Class 4 / 1200M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 17:00

(7) DYNA’S DREAM is hard to oppose here, coming in after back to back wins. She is up in class but is nicely in and should have the beating of these. Nothing else enters in much form so (2) POWERFUL FORCE and (4) WORLD QUICK, who have both beaten a few of these in their most recent outings are next best although both will have to find plenty to challenge the favourite. (3) MASTER KEY has been poor in her last two but can go better dropped back in distance while (6) IRON MARINE was last returning from almost four months off in February and can improve today.

Favourites: (7) Dyna’s Dream (2) Powerful Force (3) Master Key (4) World Quick

Race 9: Class 3 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 17:30

Thomas Gillespie’s (5) JUNGANG GONGJU could only manage 5th of 8 in a competitive event over this distance in January. This is competitive too but the opposition s perhaps a touch softer and we could see a repeat of this mare’s Christmas Day victory. (3) DONGNAM CHEONHA ran a decent 3rd on his first start of 2016 over the distance last month and should be close again while (6) BOHEMIAN is up in class and distance following victory at 1400M in January. (9) CHEONJI GEOTAP was disappointing over a mile last starts but can be given another chance today with (7) GLOBAL KING, racing for the first time since October, a live outsider.

Favourites: (5) Jungang Gongju (3) Dongnam Cheonha (6) Bohemian (7) Global King

Race 10: Class 2 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 18:00

(1) EMETH won three of his first four and dropped back to 1400M today should be able to hit the front early and make all to return to the winner’s circle here. (5) LAST TICKET is another who should appreciate the shorter distance today but may have to settle for a sixth 2nd place finish while speaking of 2nds, (10) TAPIPOINT has finish in that position in both his two starts at Busan since being relocated from Seoul and can challenge again today. (2) YUSEONG FIGHTING and (3) JIBONG MANSE look best of the rest.

Favourites: (1) Emeth (10) Tapipoint (5) Last Ticket (2) Yuseong Fighting
