It’s a bit of a low-key Sunday of racing in Seoul with nothing higher than class 3 although there is still plenty of competitive action with 11 races from 10:45 to 18:00. Busan does have a class 1 feature with last year’s Grand Prix Stakes runner-up Dongbang Daero in action. On the south-coast there are 6 races from 12:40 to 17:05. Here is the race-by-race for Seoul with Busan selections below:

Race 1: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 24 Million
(9) AQUA STROM has been getting closer across his six starts to date, culminating in 2nd place at 1000M running on well on May 12th. He’s not a fast starter so he has a tendency to leave himself too much to do but if he gives himself a chance here, he should win. If you prefer one who will be on speed, then (6) TAMNA YEOSIN is the way to go. She improved to 2nd last time at this distance on a slow running track on May 5th and should be a contender here. Also showing good improvement last time was (11) MACH SEUNGNI while the unfortunately named (1) I AM WINNER has been consistently close in her latest three and can play a role here, likely challenging Tamna Yeosin for the early lead. (8) YONGUI JUDO is another who has a 2nd place in his record and can be considered.
Selections | (9) Aqua Strom (6) Tamna Yeosin (1) I Am Winner (11) Mach Seungni |
Next Best | 8, 3 |
Fast Start | 1, 6, 10 |
Race 2: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
It’s hard to look past (8) HANSEN GLORY here. He showed lots of promise in three starts at this distance as juvenile before suffering an injury after his last race in December. He was fast in a May trial and if he’s anything like he was last year, he’ll win. If he does come up short, then (5) JUNGLE BEAT and (6) FLYING JOY could be ones to take advantage. Jungle Beat is up in class despite not having won at class 6 but shouldn’t be intimidated by too much here while Flying Joy comes in following 5th place in a stiffer contest than this at the distance three weeks ago. Neither (1) EVER A ONE nor (9) LEAD UP went especially well behind (11) PARTY POWER last month but both could improve today.
Selections | (8) Hansen Glory (5) Jungle Beat (6) Flying Joy (9) Lead Up |
Next Best | 1, 11 |
Fast Start | 3, 5, 6, 9 |
Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Very competitive race with cases to be made for plenty. (3) NAEGA KKEUTPANWANG is a front-runner who has had to settle for 3rd place in each of her last three starts. She drops back half a furlong in trip today and it could be to her benefit. (2) SEUNGNI NARAE had to scratched from a scheduled start five weeks ago through injury but he entered that in good form and would have been well-backed having secured a 3rd and a 2nd in his two starts immediately beforehand. He’s back working well now and should be in the frame here. (6) BACK TO BACK has been a touch disappointing in his latest two but is back at the distance he won at today and should be a threat. (12) CHEON MONG and (8) BAEKSAN ISLAND came home 3rd and 4th when they raced each other at the distance on a wet track on May 13th and both can look to match that here. Most punters will have finally given up on (11) KKEULEOJUNEUN SON who seems to have lost her way.
Selections | (3) Naega Kkeutpanwang (6) Back To Back (2) Seungni Narae (12) Cheon Mong |
Next Best | 8, 11, 7 |
Fast Start | 3, 4, 11, 12 |
Race 4: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Small but competitive field. (5) JAELONGI is the pick, having run 2nd to Nike Street at class and distance on May 12th. He is still a maiden but now has four 2nd places to his name and can go one better today with Moon Se Young riding for the first time and likely attempting to make all. If he is to come up short once again then (6) DONGSEO GADEUK, who has finished behind him in both their last two races, is one contender to take top honours. However, more likely are (1) STAR PERFECT and (8) JEONGSANG DOLPUNG. Neither covered themselves in glory in their respective last starts but both are better than that and are proven money winners at this level. (4) WON AGAIN was a surprising 2nd at class and distance on May 20th and can also be respected today.
Selections | (5) Jaelongi (1) Star Perfect (8) Jeongsang Dolpung (4) Won Again |
Next Best | 6, 3 |
Fast Start | 5, 7, 8 |
Race 5: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Another small but very tricky contest with all seven having at least some kind of claim. (6) SAEBYEOK JANGGUN is up in class following his maiden win at the fifth time of asking at this distance on May 13th. It wasn’t excepted and came on a very wet track, but if he can get on the lead early, a repeat can’t be ruled out. (5) HAETSAL WANGJA was a good 3rd in similarly damp conditions the week before at this class and can get even closer today. (7) MONDAY MONEY enters following back to back 3rd place finishes at 1700M and at this distance and is in the frame too. (2) GONSEOL and (4) GWACHEON TUHON are both maidens after far too many starts but both have enough about them to find the money in races such as this.
Selections | (5) Haetsal Wangja (6) Saebyeok Janggun (7) Monday Money (2) Gonseol |
Next Best | 4, 3 |
Fast Start | 3, 6 |
Race 6: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
Surely this time (3) ICHEON SSAL returns to the winner’s circle. He won his first two last summer before coming up short in the big late season juvenile races. He had some near misses behind good horses at the start of this year before only beating one home in last month’s Korean Derby. Not the most straightforward of horses but he has too much for this lot. (6) THUNDER MARINE beat (9) HUIMANG POINT as the pair came home 1st and 2nd at this class over 1200M on May 19th. Thunder Marine looks a talent but has been inconsistent while Huimang Point is turning into a runner-up specialist, but both should get close here and could even take advantage if Icheon Ssal’s coltish ways return. (1) BLACK MUSIC was a decent 2nd over 1400M a month ago and has claims to match here while (4) GWANGYA BULGIDUNG drops back in trip today and could offer some placing value.
Selections | (3) Icheon Ssal (6) Thunder Marine (1) Black Music (4) Gwangya Bulgidung |
Next Best | 9, 8 |
Fast Start | 1, 5, 6 |
Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(4) L CAR finds himself rapidly up in class having won two in a row at 1000M and this distance in April and May. There’s noting to suggest he can’t cope with it and he is the pick to win again, likely trying to lead all the way, but this does look to be his toughest assignment to date. The Simon Foster-trained (2) WOMAN VOLT was 3rd when favourite on debut on May 19th. She ran well enough to suggest she has wins in her and she can go close here. (5) OLD IRISH BRET showed significant improvement in the wet last time running 4th in a good race at 1000M and can continue his progress today. (1) NEW HIGH TIME and (7) KAILASH DANCER are others who should be competing at least for places.
Selections | (4) L Car (2) Woman Volt (5) Old Irish Bret (1) New High Time |
Next Best | 7, 10 |
Fast Start | 1, 2, 4 |
Race 8: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
The manner in which (2) ÉCLAIR BEAUTY romped home by six lengths over 1300M on May 12th suggests that even though she is up in class today – and it was a very wet track that day – she can win again and is accordingly the slight top pick. (5) SEOURI BYEOL was 2nd that day and gets promoted too but it is a third horse up in class here who looks to be the main danger. That’s (6) SEUNGJAUI MISO, a battling winner over 1300M last month and one who looks to have plenty more to come. (4) HURACAN was a good 2nd over 1000M at this level three weeks ago and runs further than the minimum distance for the first time. (1) MIGHTY MAMBO can be forgiven his latest start and given another chance here. He is a strong finisher and can pass plenty late on.
Selections | (2) Éclair Beauty (6) Seungjaui Miso (4) Huracan (1) Mighty Mambo |
Next Best | 5, 7 |
Fast Start | 2, 4 |
Race 9: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(5) SIMPLE LIFE comes in off the back of two consecutive runner-up finishes at class and distance. He should be on the early speed here and has every chance of going all the way. (2) LOVE IT too enters following a series of near-misses, each time beaten by good horses. She is yet to win in eight starts but that’s more reflective of the quality that she has faced rather than any weakness of her own and she should be firmly in the hunt today. (9) SARYEONI WIN was a solid 2nd at class and distance on May 12th and can repeat while (8) BEONGAEMA and (6) CHICAGO ART came home 2nd and 3rd at class and distance a day later, both exceeding expectations. Lightly-raced (3) WHIZ REINA is the wildcard. She showed plenty of potential in three outings last year but has only raced once since.
Selections | (5) Simple Life (2) Love It (9) Saryeoni Win (3) Whiz Reina |
Next Best | 7, 6 |
Fast Start | 3, 5, 7, 9 |
Race 10: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million
It took (8) NONGBON DAERO a few goes to figure things out, but he’s now gone on to win five in a row and is up to class 3 today with every chance of extending his winning streak to six. It’s his first time at 1800M too but he had little difficulty with 1700M and he’s the one to beat. (9) SMART PARK and (2) HIBIKI finished 2nd and 3rd respectively at 1700M on May 6th and both should be in the frame again with Hibiki slightly more likely to challenge the favourite. (5) JEONGSANGOREUM ran a good 2nd at class and distance on May 12th and the experienced gelding can continue his solid run of form today and is a likely pacesetter. (1) HYESEONG YEOWANG, a stablemate of Smart Park, is a touch inconsistent but goes well on her day and shouldn’t be too far away.
Selections | (8) Nongbon Daero (2) Hibiki (5) Jeongsangoreum (9) Smart Park |
Next Best | 1, 7 |
Fast Start | 1, 4, 5 |
Race 11: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million
(6) IGYEOJUMA is up in class having registered a battling win over 1200M on what was his second career start on May 20th. The Super Saver gelding is up in trip too but can come from just behind the early pace to win again. The main danger is (5) STAR CAT. She won back to back contests in February and March to get up to this level and has since managed a 2nd and a 4th in challenging company. She’ll be on speed from the start. (1) PRO MATHEUS comes in having improved in his latest effort and the experienced five-year-old could get close here. (3) JINGYEOGUI TYRANNO remains a maiden after six attempts but is not without ability. (10) ILJIN HWARANG looks best of the rest.
Selections | (6) Igyeojuma (5) Star Cat (3) Jingeyogui Tyranno (1) Pro Matheus |
