Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (October 14)

Seoul is back from the long holiday and on what is a set to be a cool but fine day in the capital there are 12 races from 10:45 to 18:00:

Race 1: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

We begin with a filly-only contest and a nice competitive one at that. (6) AMENDA wasn’t far off 3rd place on debut in August, coming home 5th but then improved to 2nd on her re-appearance on September 3rd. She’s not the quickest of starters but is up slightly in trip today and has as good a chance as any here. (3) RUBY BEOLKIN returned from a lengthy absence to record a sound 3rd place at this distance last month. She looks a much better filly now and can continue to progress here while (2) JEGUKUI HUYE was favourite when stepped up to 1700M a month ago but didn’t see out the trip. She should be much happier back at 1300M where she scored her best finish to date. (5) SAUVIGNON and (8) CHEONGUN ILHO, both at this distance for the first time, are others with scope to go well.

Selections (6) Amenda (3) Ruby Beolkin (2) Jegukui Huye (5) Sauvignon
Next Best 8, 1, 4
Fast Start 3, 9, 11, 12

Race 2: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Seven of the twelve are racing for the first time but it’s among the five who have each raced once previously where we find out pick. That’s (12) GEUMA THUNDER, who may have been ten lengths behind the winner on debut at this distance on September 9th but that was no disgrace. He led for much of the race and ran on for a comfortable 2nd place and while the outside gate may not be ideal, he’s got every chance here. The other experienced ones don’t really appeal, even (6) CLEAN FLOWER, who was 4th back in August so we’ll look to the newcomers to find the dangers. (10) DOKDO JIGI was eye-catching in his trial and while that doesn’t always translate to a race, he was fast and if he runs like that here, could well win. (4) NAM SON was slightly more sedate in his heat but ran 2nd to an experienced racehorse and can go well first up. (2) FOREVER WINNER and (3) GLOBAL KINGDOM other first-timers who looked good in trials while (11) HANSEN GLORY took a couple of goes to get it right, he came through well enough eventually and has a top jockey booking.

Selections (12) Geuma Thunder (10) Dokdo Jigi (4) Nam Son (3) Global Kingdom
Next Best 2, 11
Fast Start 3, 10, 11, 12

Race 3: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

A full field of debut-makers here and (2) LUCKY MISS looks sure to be favourite having been quickest in trials last month. She trialled up alongside a few experienced ones and didn’t look out of place. (5) MYEONGPUM BOBAE beat both (7) SEONGBUL CHAMP and (4) NEGA KKEUTPANWANG quite handily when the three of them trialled together on September 15th and she looks to be the clear second choice. Given the draw, she could well get the lead early and could go all the way. Coming from wide will be the pair of (11) DOUBLE GOLD and (12) GUREUM SONJITHAE. The latter looks to be the readier of the two but both could go well first-up here.

Selections (2) Lucky Miss (5) Myeongpum Bobae (12) Gureum Sonjithae (7) Seongbul Champ
Next Best 11, 4
Fast Start 1, 5, 7, 12

Race 4: Class 4 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

Valuable race for imported juveniles with seven of nine racing for the very first time. However, those debutants will have to go some if they are to beat (3) EMPIRE KINGDOM. Having won a trial in August, the Bodemeister colt duly made all on debut on September 16th to win by a length and a half over 1200M and is hard to oppose here. (6) WHIZ REINA finished two lengths ahead of (9) WELLNESS K as the pair ran 1st and 2nd in a September trial, both performing acceptably enough to get backing for a place here while (8) NABOM DOKKAEBI actually registered the best trial time of the newcomers and can also go well first up here.

Selections (3) Empire Kingdom (6) Whiz Reina (8) Nabom Dokkaebi (9) Wellness K
Next Best 4, 2
Fast Start 2, 3, 9

Race 5: Class 6 (1700M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(10) SIMON RICH has run below market expectations in each of his last three outings, beaten four lengths when favourite over 1300M a month ago. Just like every other horse in this race, he steps up to two turns for the first time and we’ll give him another chance to get it right. You’d have to fancy him to be on or close to the early speed but of course, that’s an unknown too. A couple who are not likely to be on the speed early though are (8) SHAR NAO and (9) STORMY. Both have shown the ability to run on reasonably well and they may be among those who appreciate the extra distance the most. (4) MUJEOKUI SIGAN and (5) WONDERFUL LUCKY are others who may have scope for improvement among this limited set.

Selections (10) Simon Rich (9) Stormy (8) Shar Nao (5) Wonderful Lucky
Next Best 4, 3
Fast Start 2, 7, 10, 11

Race 6: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Fillies and mares only. (1) PEARL QUEEN just came up short by three-quarters of a length at class and distance a month ago and today can sit handy and come through late to get the win. Also coming in off a 2nd place finish is (6) BAEKSAN YEOWANG, who is yet to win in four starts but has now come close on two occasions. Accordingly she’s up in class today but should be competitive, again from off the pace. Ignore (3) PYEWOL SUHWA’s latest run and he can be given another chance with a favourable draw and a likely lead along with (11) SEOUL BOLT who makes a welcome return to a distance she has been best at. (5) SHANGHAI PANGPANG was scarcely involved last start but is another who could be worthy of another chance at potentially decent odds.

Selections (1) Pearl Queen (11) Seoul Bolt (3) Pyewol Suhwa (6) Baeksan Yeowang
Next Best 5, 10
Fast Start 2, 3, 9, 11

Race 7: Class 5 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

He’s yet to win and he’s up in class but (1) ONE LEADER has a chance here. He went well on his first try at the distance last time out and is sure to get the trip again. The two main dangers both try this distance for the first time and they were only separated by a nose when they raced each other over 1300M on September 16th. (2) DALDARI just got the better of (5) DAEGUNHAM that day and both should be involved in things here with Daegunham perhaps preferred. (4) ALL KILL remains a maiden but at this distance and in this company could find the minor money along with (7) COMPLETE HIGH.

Selections (1) One Leader (5) Daegunham (2) Daldari (4) All Kill
Next Best 7, 11
Fast Start 2, 3, 6,11

Race 8: Class 4 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Gemologist colt (8) KYE RI steps up to two turns for the first time and although he’s never been better than 3rd in nine attempts so far, he looks to have every chance here with Djordje Perovic returning to the mount for the first time in a long time. (1) BORN WARRIOR somewhat unexpectedly got his maiden win at the tenth time of asking last start. It was at this distance and he must be respected albeit he is carrying an extra 4.5kg today. (6) YEONGUNG BULPAE beat (7) JWACHEONGNYONG as the pair ran 2nd and 4th at class and distance a month ago and both look to be in the hunt here while (3) GOLDSTAR HILLS is perhaps better than recent form suggests and can improve.

Selections (8) Kye Ri (3) Goldstar Hills (1) Born Warrior (7) Jwacheongnyong
Next Best 6, 9
Fast Start 2, 9

Race 9: Class 3 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(7) OP SEVEN enters two for two and really should be extending his 100% record here. The Tale of Ekati colt was a two-length class and distance winner on September 3rd and the additional 3.5 kg today should be of little consequence. (2) OKAY GOOD looks to have the best chance of getting close, stepping back in trip today while the inconsistent (11) BROADWAY SIN is also better than last run suggests. Up in class (5) ARCH ARCH is not without placing claims and nor is (9) FIX TIME.

Selections (7) OP Seven (2) Okay Good (5) Arch Arch (11) Broadway Sin
Next Best 9, 10
Fast Start 2, 3, 7, 11

Race 10: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Really competitive affair here with a number in with solid claims. Top-rated is (6) SENTA POBA, who has come close in both efforts at this class so far and steps up to 1300M for the first time. He’ll be on the early speed and should go close. Joining him up front from the start is likely to be (8) SMART BOBAE, a winner of two from four so far and 4th in a similar contest over 1200M a month ago and in the frame here. (3) GEUMSOWHA can be forgiven a disappointing showing in a solid MJC Trophy on international weekend and is worthy of another chance here with (4) SANGBIGUN and the up in class (2) GIMOA LAUNCH others to consider.

Selections (6) Senta Poba (8) Smart Bobae (3) Geumsowha (4) Sangbigun
Next Best 2, 10
Fast Start 1, 2, 6, 8

Races 11 & 12 won’t be simulcast overseas but selections are as follows:

Race 11:  7, 2, 9, 5
Race 12: 8, 4, 5, 7
