It’s the final day of racing before the Korean Thanksgiving break and at both Seoul and Busan, some of the top names on the peninsula are coming out for a run. The day’s main attraction is on the south-coast where stablemates Triple Nine and Power Blade face each other once again, this time in the Kukje Sinmun Cup. There are 11 races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00 and 6 at Busan from 12:40 to 17:05.
Power Blade finally got the better of Triple Nine in the Owners’ Cup over a mile in August and had he had a slightly ore favourable draw at Seoul last month, could well have won the Korea Sprint. At 1400M today he will be favoured to prevail once more over Triple Nine, who is yet to win since returning from Dubai. Also among the small field of eight are Success Story and Seoul raider City Star.
Korean Derby winner Final Boss returned to winning ways over 1800M in August and today he too steps down to a Sprint distance in the concluding race 11. He’s up against sprint-specialist Choegang Schiller over 1200M which means he carries a very light weight.
Only Seoul is simulcast overseas today – here are the notes:
Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million
It’s been a long time coming but (8) STORMY PASSION should finally get her maiden win today. She’s been getting closer, culminating in a 3rd place three weeks ago but has always run into one or two too quick. It will be her first time as favourite and she should have too much against this limited set of opponents. Main danger is (11) GEUMEUN JUOK, who has been a little one-paced but shown glimpses of ability across three improving outings to date. (6) I AM WINNER made an underwhelming debut in August but looked useful when trialling up again a couple of weeks ago and may have something to contribute if she gets a good start while (5) DUSON EYE and debut-maker (12) CHOEGO BISANG are others who could go ok.
|Selections||(8) Stormy Passion (11) Geumeun Juok (5) Duson Eye (6) I Am Winner|
|Next Best||12, 7|
|Fast Start||1, 5, 6, 12|
Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million
Restricted to juveniles this one with six first-timers joining three who have raced before. It’s one of those three, (7) MAGIC TEN, who will be the strong favourite. She finished off very nicely for 2nd over 1000M on debut at the end of August and given the extra furlong today, should win. (4) SEOURI BYEOL similarly should be happier today at this distance than she was on her own debut and can improve. None of the debut-makers were hugely impressive in trials although (3) CLEAN UP TEUKGEUP will be backed by virtue of having recorded the fastest time. Likewise, (9) ROYAL TANK also showed that he knows what he’s supposed to in the latest of three trials he went through a couple of weeks ago.
|Selections||(7) Magic Ten (4) Seouri Byeol (3) Clean Up Teukgeup (9) Royal Tank|
|Next Best||1, 5, 2|
|Fast Start||2, 8, 9|
Race 3: Class 5 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
Competitive contest. (1) CLEO and (5) GOLD LEG are both up in class following decent showings at class 6, the latter running out an all the way winner by three lengths over 1300M last time. Both should be competitive at this level. They won’t be favourites though. (4) MENI BADA didn’t quite get home when well backed on his first try at the distance on September 2nd. The two-year-old shows promise though and should have learned from that. He can win today. Also with promise is (2) HARPY EAGLE. The
Drosselmeyer gelding has had a number of setbacks but finally returned at the end of August for his first start as a four-year-old and did well. He can build on his 4th place from last time. The wildcard is (6) BLUE LANCE, who finally returns sixty-eight weeks after his last start. He trialled up well.
|Selections||(4) Meni Bada (1) Cleo (2) Harpy Eagle (5) Gold Leg|
|Next Best||6, 12|
|Fast Start||1, 4, 5, 10|
Race 4: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
Competitive contest here but (1) SMART DREAM perhaps has the edge having run a good 3rd among slightly stronger company over 1300M on September 2nd. She led for much of that race, getting passed late on but can stay on at the slightly shorter trip today. The very experienced (7) OUR CAT got even closer when just beaten a head at class and distance on September 3rd and can compete again today while (11) GEUM KAERA enters off the back of a solid run of form and can be a danger. (2) SILLA HWARANG was disappointing last time but worthy of another chance here while (5) ANYANG CHEETAH is likely to be on pace early and can hold her own too.
|Selections||(1) Smart Dream (11) Geum Kaera (5) Anyang Cheetah (2) Silla Hwarang|
|Next Best||7, 10, 4|
|Fast Start||1, 4, 5, 8|
Race 5: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(8) SINUI MYEONGRYEONG won his first two starts with ease before stepping up to this class and distance on August 20th. He was beaten, running 2nd behind a gate to wire winner in a fast race on a very fast running track. He should have come on from that and returns after a six week break ready to resume winning ways today. (2) JEONGAN KINGDOM was 4th that day and in the intervening period has also managed a 5th place over 1300M and he can be a threat today so long as he doesn’t leave things too late. The main danger though looks to be the up in class (7) DAE BONGHWANG. He returned from five months out to comfortably score over this distance on August 28th and there should be more to come. (1) SIN DOLGYEOK can’t be ruled out following a swift win over 1000M last time. He’s been off since July and is sure to be on the early pace, the only question being if he’ll stay on when put under pressure in this company. Another one up in class is (5) SEUNGNIUI YEOWANG following two dominant wins over 1000M. She’s up in distance for the first time today.
|Selections||(8) Sinui Myeongryeong (7) Dae Bonghwang (5) Seungniui Yeowang (2) Jeongan Kingdom|
|Next Best||1, 10|
|Fast Start||1, 5, 6, 8|
Race 6: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million
(10) MUNHAK CHIEF didn’t do much on debut in June but has won both his subsequent two outings in fine fashion. Accordingly the Pioneerof the Nile gelding is up in both class and distance today but he looks very nicely in and has an excellent chance of making it three in a row. It’s a competitive field though. (8) LIGER SOCKS beat (4) SMOKEY VALE as the pair ran 3rd and 4th over class and distance on August 13th.The latter followed up with a 3rd place at 1200M at the beginning of this month and both should be in the hunt today with both also likely to be on the early speed. Joining them up front early should be (9) MAJUNGMUL, 2nd at class and distance three weeks ago having seemed likely to make all and she’ll get close once more. (11) SEOCHANG BIHO, four-lengths adrift of Smokey Vale last start, and (12) DAE JYUSIN, winner at this class over 1200M at the end of August are others who can be taken into consideration.
|Selections||(10) Munhak Chief (9) Majungmul (8) Liger Socks (12) Dae Jyusin|
|Next Best||4, 5|
|Fast Start||4, 7, 8, 9|
Race 7: Class 5 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million
(10) BIG SKY got his maiden win at the 16th time of asking on September 3rd coming from midfield to prevail by a nose on the line. It had been coming as well with him beating a couple of these on his way to 2nd the time before. An apprentice jockey is put up today to keep his carried weight nice and light and he could well strike again. (11) SPEED CORE beat two of his rivals here on the way to a 2nd place of his own at class and distance three weeks ago. He too carries very little and looks a danger. Both those are likely to try to come from behind but out on speed early should be (1) COMPLETE WINNER. He hasn’t raced since taking a spin around 1000M back in July but went well at this distance the time before and has the services of the champion jockey today. (6) HAPPIEST, 5th behind Big Sky last time, and (8) BONNET BLUE are also in the moneying frame.
|Selections||(10) Big Sky (1) Complete Winner (11) Speed Core (8) Bonnet Blue|
|Next Best||6, 12|
|Fast Start||1, 4, 12|
Race 8: Class 4 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million
(2) GWACHEON WONDER took twenty goes to get his maiden win which finally arrived at this distance in June. Since then he has been up in class but holding his own nicely with a 4th and 3rd amongst useful types in his latest two. He’s versatile but will likely be content to let others lead here and look to finish strongly. “Others” could well mean (1) PHILIPPOS. He debuted last year but wasn’t seen again until this July. He’s put in two solid performances since, both at 1200M and takes a big step up in trip today but should be equal to it. The experienced (4) DANGCHAN MOSEUP is a proven money winner at this class and distance and should be there or thereabouts among this lot while (3) STRONG SHINE is up in class after a slightly unexpected four-length win at this trip just two weeks ago. (9) DALLYEORA LEO is another who shouldn’t be too far away.
|Selections||(2) Gwacheon Wonder (1) Philippos (3) Strong Shine (4) Dangchan Moseup|
|Next Best||9, 10|
|Fast Start||1, 7, 8, 9|
Race 9: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million
Lightly raced filly (3) RICH YEOJANGGUN has been shooting up the classes in her rare appearances. She’s four for four so far and races for the first time since a comfortable gate to wire win, beating two of these in the process, at class and distance on July 1st. The company is stiffer today but if she’s on her game, she’ll win again, most likely leading gate to wire. She comes up against a decent one though. (1) JANGSAN CITY was the winner of a similarly stiff race over class and distance just two weeks ago and should be a tough opponent while (6) GEUPSIWOO is up in class having recently acquired a taste for winning by margins. The inconsistent (8) OJEI MYEONGDAP is also worth another chance following a lacklustre effort on latest.
|Selections||(3) Rich Yeojanggun (1) Jangsan City (8) Ojei Myeongdap (6) Geupsiwoo|
|Next Best||9, 11|
|Fast Start||3, 6, 8, 9|
Race 10: Class 2 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million
Good race this. (11) SEONGPA has won his latest two both at this distance and most recently at this class in front-running fashion. He defied a wide gate last time and while he carries an extra 3kg today, could win again. (6) ACE RUNNER was 3rd behind Seongpa last time on August 13th having won at class and distance the time before. He was favourite that day and will have plenty of backers to overturn the form here. (1) DIA SOCKS steps back in trip having finished a very good 2nd in the JRA Trophy race over 1800M on September 9th and should be in the frame while (12) ANOTHER SMART ONE, class and distance winner in July, went back to trial after a lacklustre effort last time out and looked very sharp. Moon Se Young takes over in the saddle today and he could be a big threat. (3) O.K. YEONDAB looks best of the rest.
|Selections||(11) Seongpa (12) Another Smart One (6) Ace Runner (1) Dia Socks|
|Next Best||3, 5|
|Fast Start||1, 7, 11|
Race 11: Class 1 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million
There were a few eyebrows raised when this year’s Korean Derby winner (11) FINAL BOSS was entered in this sprint race, not least of Moon Se Young who rode him on his return to the winner’s circle in August. Moon gets on another but under such a light weight, Final Boss really ought to be winning this. He faces sprint specialist (12) CHOEGANG SCHILLER, whose high rating puts much of the field out of the handicap. Even under 59kg, the 2015 Asia Challenge Cup winner remains a big danger. While an apprentice rides Final Boss, Moon gets the leg-up on (8) BEST GUY who beat both Choegang Schiller and (3) DYNAMIC JILJU last time out in July and he’ll be among the leading contenders too. (2) JUNGL DRUMMER lost his way a bit of late but can get back to some form here with (9) SUN ROK another to look out for if the favourites don’t take your fancy.
|Selections||(11) Final Boss (12) Choegang Schiller (8) Best Guy (9) Sun Rok|
|Next Best||2, 1, 3|
|Fast Start||1, 7, 8, 10|
