Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 30)

Saturday racing at Seoul: 12 races from 10:45 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Not exactly thrilling fare to begin with today but that means it’s very open and we’re looking for something to improve. (7) DIA RUNNER did ok in a couple of starts in Spring and while her latest effort was nothing special, she drops back to 1000M today and looks in the frame. Likewise (1) MORAN DONGBEAK improved on what was just his second start last time out and could develop today. (2) ARGO UNIQUE, (8) DORAON PACHYAI and (10) CHEON NOK are the only ones in the field to have previously recorded 3rd place finishes with the former of those perhaps most likely to repeat or go better. It’s a great race to debut in and as such (12) SEONGUNG, a very late-starter who looked ok in a trial just last week, has to be given a chance.

Selections (1) Moran Dongbeak (2) Argo Unique (12) Seongung (7) Dia Runner
Next Best 8, 10, 3
Fast Start 3, 4, 6, 10

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Katsumi Yoshida-owned (2) BRANDON showed a bit of promise in three outings in late spring and early summer culminating in a 2nd place at this distance. He’s been off since then but returns here as favourite. (7) WIND POWER beat (6) HONEY RUSH as the pair ran 3rd and 4th over the distance on September 2nd and Wind Power looks to be the primary danger here. Honey Rush was six-lengths back that day when sent off as favourite following a good effort the time before and could get back into form. (1) NAEGA JAL NAGA was 4th, his best finish so far, three weeks ago at this distance and can match that here while (5) SUPER COBRA, making just his third start today, steps up in trip for the first time and could benefit.

Selections (2) Brandon (7) Wind Power (6) Honey Rush (5) Super Cobra
Next Best 1, 4
Fast Start 6, 7, 8

Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

Another race that’s not exactly loaded with talent and therefore, (3) K.N. BLUE, an encouraging 4th on debut at the end of August in a race that was arguably tougher than this, has to be favourite to score under champion jockey Moon Se Young. (2) GASOK SHINHWA showed a bit of talent when 3rd of 7 at this distance on September 2nd on what was just her second outing. She can get on the early speed today from a good draw and can go all the way to get close. Also needing to get on that speed early is (8) BLACK MUSIC, He did that on September 3rd and recorded a 2nd place at this distance, his best finish to date. (1) GIDONG DAEJANG and (10) KWAEDO YEOWANG are others in with a shout of improvement.

Selections (3) K.N. Blue (2) Gasok Shinhwa (8) Black Music (1) Gidong Daejang
Next Best 10, 5
Fast Start 2, 6, 8, 9

Race 4: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Restricted to two-year-olds and therefore with enhanced prize money but just nine runners. Five of them go for the very first time and it’s to one of those we turn for the pick. It’s generally wise to treat trial times with caution but the manner in which (7) NIKE STREET won her trial two weeks ago suggests she needs to be taken seriously. It was a performance that would have seen her win many actual races and if she brings that to the track today, she’ll win this gate-to-wire. Of the other debut-makers, (6) TAMNA YEOSIN was the one that caught the eye, winning her trial handily. As for the ones who have raced before, (4) BISUL GONGJU finished off well for 4th on debut at the beginning of the month and has to be considered. We’ll expect her to be ridden forward earlier today. (1) JIGONG JEIL was also 4th on her debut a week later although was a bit further back and a little less impressive.

Selections (7) Nike Street (4) Bisul Gongju (1) Jigong Jeil (6) Tanma Yeosin
Next Best 8, 3
Fast Start 4, 7

Race 5: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(2) MENI TURBO is in danger of contracting a severe case of “second-it is” A pair of runner-up finishes in her first two races saw her up in class and she was then 2nd once more on her first attempt at this level on September 2nd. In fairness, all three who have beaten her so far look decent types and she was only a half-length back last time. She has a good draw today to get away well and we shall give her another chance. Should she end up beaten again, (1) DALLYEORA PACHYAI, who is putting together a fine run of near misses himself and is accordingly up in class today, could be one to take advantage. (8) JILPUNG DOKJU has proven capable of winning money at this class already and should be close again as should (5) HWANSANGUI DOYAK who was 4th behind Meni Turbo last time. The up in class pair of (10) HWANGGEUM YEONMOT and (11) MOON ISLE KING should be competitive at this level while returning to the theme of near-missers, (12) CHOEGOYA CHOEGO remains a maiden but is rarely too far away.

Selections (2) Meni Turbo (8) Jilping Dokju (12) Choegoya Choego (1) Dallyeora Pachyai
Next Best 5, 11, 10, 3
Fast Start 1, 2, 6, 11

Race 6: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Competitive race here restricted to fillies and mares. (2) ECTON SINHWA had been getting closer and finally got her maiden win over this distance on September 3rd. She looks to still have plenty or progression in her and has every chance here. The start before, at the end of July, she finished 3rd behind (11) DONGHAE TENTENTEN and the latter filly went on to run 2nd on her first effort at this level a month ago and will surely be in contention once more. (3) STAR PERFECT and (4) SUN SMART, the latter a Korean Oaks also-ran, have both proven competent at this level and they’ll be close once more. Star Perfect was involved in a three-way finish on August 12th when she just missed out on her maiden win by a neck but was in turn, a neck ahead of (9) WAWA YEOJANGBU in 3rd. That filly has never finished worse than 5th and looked sharp in a trial a couple of weeks ago under Moon Se Young, who takes the race mount for the first time here.

Selections (11) Donghae Tententen (2) Ecton Sinhwa (9) Wawa Yeojangbu (4) Sun Smart
Next Best 3, 1, 10
Fast Start 3, 4, 9

Race 7: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(11) HAE HU was a front-running winner on debut over this distance on August 27th. Obviously he is up in class and drawn wide today but there’s not an awful lot to fear here and he can maintain his 100% record. (3) HI EUREKA enters off the back of consecutive 3rd place finishes and will likely be joining Hae Hu in competing to get on the early speed and go all the way while (6) FIGHTER BONG was a slightly disappointing 4th when well backed last time but can get close once more. The delightfully named (1) ALL KILL should also be competitive in this company.

Selections (11) Hae Hu (3) Hi Eureka (6) Fighter Bong (1) All Kill
Next Best 7, 4
Fast Start 3, 8, 11

Race 8: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

Imported two-year-olds get to race for a big prize here and we have eleven US breds joined by just the one Australian. Three of them have raced before and it is from those where the favourite is likely to emerge. That’s (1) TO GO WIN, a Tiz Wonderful filly who was a solid 2nd on debut behind a good winner on August 27th having briefly led not far out. (5) MANHATTAN MUSIC too was promising on debut when 3rd in a good race in mid-August and both seem to have been saved for this. As for the debut-makers, quite a few caught the eye in trials. The only one to win a heat was (12) RICHARDOFNEWSTEAD, a Haynesfield colt who was a $19K purchase this June from Ocala Breeders’ Sales. He looked very promising in the process too. Others who went well in trials include (2) GEUMSEONG YEOWANG, a filly by Great Notion who cost $25K as a yearling from Fasig Tipton and (3) CHEONGSU YEOGEOL. A Run Away And Hide filly procured as a yearling from at Keeneland for the potentially bargain proice of $8.5K. All three could go well first up.

Selections (1) To Go Win (5) Manhattan Music (3) Cheongsu Yeogeol (2) Geumseong Yeowang
Next Best 12, 6
Fast Start 4, 5, 11, 12

Race 9: Class 4 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 60 Million

(6) TAMNA KING has bounded up the classes with wins in his latest two, both of which were on soaking wet tracks. He looks a decent one so should still be taken into consideration today but there’s no question this is a harder ask. Instead we’re going to go with (8) MAGIC ROCKET, who was 2nd over 1200M four weeks ago at this class and can come with a strong finish from a handy position on what is his first try at this level. (9) MEGA HIT enters following a creditable 5th of 12 in the competitive Macau Jockey Club Trophy three weeks ago. That was her lowest finish to date but she looks very nicely in here and can get close. Yet another to try the distance for the first time is (5) ROAD KING and he too looks nicely in under a very light weight while 2nd place specialist (10) EXCELLENT QUEEN – no wins but five runner-up finishes in seven outings – is up in class here and could find the money once more.

Selections (8) Magic Rocket (9) Mega Hit (6) Tamna King (10) Excellent Queen
Next Best 5, 3
Fast Start 3, 6, 7, 12

Race 10: Class 3 (1700M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(1) DANGDAE GEOLJAK enters having won his latest two by a combine margin of eighteen lengths. Just for good measure he broke the 1700M track record last time too. Conditions are likely to be very different this time but an apprentice jockey on board keeps the weight down at 53kg instead of the 57kg he would otherwise have had, he’ll be on the early speed and he could well go all the way again. Five of the others raced each other at class and distance on August 27th and it was (12) SPECIAL RUNNER who came out on top, He came out of the same outside gate, dropped to the rear and then finished strongly and will be looking to repeat the exact same trick today. 3rd in that race was (6) WILD THUNDER, 6th in the final leg of the Triple Crown and a winner at this distance before and he can be backed to go better here, likely from the front, while (5) HAPPY TODAY and (7) NAREUMI YEONGHON are others who could well be in the frame.

Selections (1) Dangdae Geoljak (6) Wild Thunder (12) Special Runner (5) Happy Today
Next Best 7, 2
Fast Start 1, 6, 8

Race 11: Class 2 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

Really competitive contest here. (4) CIN CIN JJAN has won three of his last four and is accordingly up in class today. He looks nicely in and another win is not impossible today. Also up in class is (8) LOST IN DRAMA who comes in following a win and a very competitive 2nd from her latest two. That win is actually her only one to date but she has shown enough to suggest she can compete for money even at this high level. Already proven to be competitive in this company is (9) KENTUCKY YEONIN, 3rd in a really quick race at this distance on August 20th. He’s another who is better than his number of wins suggests and he could well start top make his statistics look a little better here. (10) HUGHES ROAD showed glimpses of getting some of his old form back when running 4th of 12, ahead of a couple of these, at the beginning of the month while (11) CHEONGDAM BULPAE has gone a little cold in his latest two but can’t be ruled out of going better here.

Selections (4) Cin Cin Jjan (9) Kentucky Yeonin (8) Lost In Drama (10) Hughes Road
Next Best 11, 12

Race 12: Class 1 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 110 Million

Seven of these raced each other at class and distance on August 27th and it was (2) POWER BISEUL, on his first start at this level, who ran out the winner to record his third straight victory. He’s a closer who came from well off the pace that day and under a very light weight once more, he can do the same today. 2nd in that race and best placed to take advantage if Power Biseul leaves himself just a little too much to do today is (9) DIPLOMATIC MISSION. He’s been very consistent in his latest three, beating plenty of these along the way and can be close again. (7) GWANGBOK CHILSIP was 3rd. It was just his second start back following four-months off and he certainly showed progress – progress he can continue to show today. Plenty of others are in the hunt too with (3) CUPID POWER and (12) BEAR QUEEN TROPHY, for whom this looks more suitable than her previous two outings, being the most prominent.

Selections (2) Power Biseul (9) Diplomatic Mission (7) Gwangbok Chilsip (3) Cupid Power
Next Best 12, 8
Fast Start 5, 6, 8, 9
