Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (September 8)

Korea Cup & Sprint weekend is well underway with the barrier draws having been made on Thursday. There is a big day of racing at Seoul on Saturday with five valubale Trophy races and then of course, the big races on Sunday. Visit the official site and twitter for the latest news and we will of course, have a full preview up in time for the big day. In the meantime, we have the pressing issue of 10 Friday races at Busan from 11:30 to 18:00. Here are the previews:

Race: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

(12) BOUND TODAY put in a much improved performance on August 11th, comfortably defeating a couple of these and with a little bit of continued progress today looks to be the one they need to beat. (3) YES QUEEN put in a career best 2nd on her 19th start the same day and should be close again while in the same race (2) ACE WOMAN also showed improvement with a 4th place and should be in the placing frame here. (4) GIPPEUM SARANG led on her last start before fading for 5th and should be on pace again today while (7) CLOVER QUEEN was solid if unspectacular on debut a month ago and can build on that today.

Selections (12) Bound Today (3) Yes Queen (2) Ace Woman (7) Clover Queen
Next Best 4, 5

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

With a 3rd and a 2nd from his first two starts and only just missing out last time at this distance, (10) DAL GEURIDA surely gets it right today. He hasn’t been especially quick out of gates but based on what he has shown so far, should be too strong in the closing stages. (11) MACH KAISERIN was 5th behind Dal Geurida on August 6th but then ran a very useful 3rd two weeks ago and can go close once more. (1) JIRANJIGYO was 4th that day and also looks in sight of a win at some stage. She should be on the early speed and it’s not impossible it could be today. (2) GHOST WARRIOR and (8) CONFIDENTIAL are others who could have a say in proceedings.

Selections (10) Dal Geurida (1) Jiranjigyo (11) Mach Kaiserin (2) Ghost Warrior
Next Best 8, 3
Fast Start 1, 11

Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

Small field here and it’s (8) CHERRY BLOSSOM who should make the breakthrough. The Bart Rice trainee has shown promise over two starts so far and there shouldn’t be too many scares here. She may well lead early and go all the way. (5) NURI ACHIM did ok on debut on August 5th, running on reasonably well over 1000M and may appreciate the step up in trip today. (1) BELLAMY GONGJU didn’t appreciate the step up last time but can be given another chance. None of the three debut-makers catch the eye at this stage although of them (4) CHANG GONG looks the most ready.

Selections (8) Cherry Blossom (5) Nuri Achim (1) Bellamy Gongju (4) Chang Gong
Next Best 3, 6
Fast Start 6, 8

Race 4: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 55 Million

Debut-making (4) CORE BLADE, who is by Menifee and out of Soseno, half-sister to Subsidy – one of the best horses in Korea ten years ago – and a decent filly in her own right, is sure to get plenty of attention, coming as she does from Kim Young Kwan’s stable and sporting Power Blade’s colours. She was good in trials and looks to have potential. She’ll not be favourite though. That will be (2) CHEONNYEONDONGANDO, a decent 3rd on debut over this distance on August 11th and likely to set the pace here. (8) TESTA MAGIC hasn’t shown much in the way of speed so far after high early expectations but could improve as could (5) SAEROUN JILJU who ran ok with no expectations on debut last month. Both of them were beaten by Cheonnyeondongando.

Selections (2) Cheonnyeondongando (4) Core Blade (5) Saeroun Jilju (8) Testa Magic
Next Best 7, 1

Race 5: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

(3) RUNNING GIRL got her maiden win at the fourth time of asking over this distance on August 6th. She is up in class here but looks very nicely in, has a good draw and has every chance of making it two in a row. She’ll be favourite but it won’t be a walkover; (9) EORIN YEOWANG remains a maiden but has come close on a number of occasions, including a solid 2nd place last time out. (7) FIRST WINNING beat three of these last time on her way to a surprising 3rd place and could repeat while (4) OPEN CHAMPION returns for the first time since March and trialed up nicely a week ago. (1) SECRET MARINE and can be forgiven his last of seven first-up on August 18th and can do better here.

Selections (3) Running Girl (9) Eorin Yeowang (4) Open Champion (7) First Winning

Race 6: Class 5 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

A pair of undefeated horses go head to head here and something has to give. (9) MAKING SEUNGNI has won twice so far with both being nice and comfortable. They were both at 1000M so he’s up in trip today but both times he came through late to run on strongly so should be ok. That said, (11) SIN STEALTH also looked a very smart type on his debut, making all and winning by as many as his jockey chose. That was at 1200M and he may well have the edge here. (8) KKEUTPAN ACE won at this distance at class 6 and is the best of the rest although we could also see challenges from (3) SEOGANGDAERO and (6) CHEONJI CHAMP.

Selections (11) Sin Stealth (9) Making Seungni (8) Kkeutpan Ace (6) Cheonji Champ
Next Best 3, 1, 4
Fast Start 8, 11

Race 7: Class 4 (1200M) Handicap / KRW 55 Million

Tricky one this to the extent that debut-maker (6) ROAD TO WARRIOR looks to have as much chance as any. The Peter Wolsley-trained gelding was a A$46K purchase and won an August trial in nice enough fashion. (12) YEONGGWANGUIFACTOR and (8) BAENGMUNBAEKDAP ran 3rd and 4th respectively on what was for both of them their debut on July 21st and both return for the first time here seemingly in the hunt while (7) HAPPY SOUND and (9) SEULVELY also go ok on their day and can compete for places.

Selections (6) Road To Warrior (8) Baengmunbaekdap (12) Yeonggwanguifactor (7) Happy Sound
Next Best 9, 3, 2
Fast Start 9, 12

Race 8: Class 4 (1300M) Handicap / KRW 55 Million

(4) COURAGIO won at this class over 1400M on his return from six months out in June and while he could only manage 3rd when odds-on a month ago, we’ll stick with him to get the job done today. (12) KWAEDO SINHWA, a solid 3rd last time out looks the main danger but there will be support too for the up in class (1) DREAM JILJU and for Bart Rice’s (6) VALKYRIE. (3) FREE RUNNING last ran back in June of 2016 when he landed his second straight win. He returns almost fifteen months later and trialed up well. He’s the wildcard.

Selections (4) Couragio (12) Kwaedo Sinhwa (1) Dream Jilju (3) Free Running
Next Best 6, 11
Fast Start 4, 7

Race 9: Class 3 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

(3) HYPER LOOP won his first four outings but, while he has fallen short when very well backed on each of his last two starts, you’d be brave to discard him here. He’ll be on pace early and has every chance. Also on pace will be the main danger (2) FANTASTIC JOY. 2nd on her first try at this class over 1200M on August 5th, she hasn’t actually raced at this distance before although a previous go at a mile wasn’t successful. Nevertheless, she has come on since and can be competitive. It looks to be between those two but best of the rest are (7) SMART GENTLEMAN and (8) CHOEGANG JEOLLYEOK.

Selections (3) Hyper Loop (2) Fantastic Joy (7) Smart Gentleman (8) Choegang Jeollyeok
Next Best 4, 6
Fast Start 2, 3

Race 10: Class 2 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 90 Million

Decent contest to finish with. Thomas Gillespie’s (7) GREAT KING comes in off the back of consecutive 2nd place finishes (he has five runner-up finishes to the one win so far) at class 3 and finds himself up in class today. He also finds himself carrying a very light weight and could very well win this. (2) MAGIC LINE saw his own run of 2nd placed finishes come to an end when 6th over 1400M last time. However, he did beat a couple of these and can return to the money today. (5) GLORY DAYS also beat a couple of his rivals here on his way to 2nd last time out and could repeat while (6) KKEUTPAN BOOSTER and (8) IRON TRAIN, also in with a shout.

Selections (7) Great King (2) Magic Line (5) Glory Days (6) Kkeutpan Booster
