Seoul Saturday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 11)

Saturday’s racing is at Seoul with 10 races from 10:45 to 18:00. All betting locations are open but attendance must be pre-booked using the MyCard app. Proof of vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens in the opener with eight of the twelve racing for the first time. At least three of those with experience, however, look promising. We’ll tentatively side with (5) ONE MORE RUSH, who has raced twice for 7th and 3rd both at this distance and in similar times. She’ll sit handy to the pace here and today could be her day. It’s a toss-up between her and (3) EUNHYE SERVE. She came from midfield to run 4th on her debut on October 23rd, finishing off very nicely indeed. She draws better today and if she can get in a more forward positon early, could be hard to beat. (10) RAON THE WILD improved on his second start and while he draws wide this time, should benefit from that experience and can improve again. Among the first-timer starters, (6) POWER K and (1) NAOL ACE are likely to be the best supported.

Selections(5) One More Rush (3) Eunhye Serve (10) Raon The Wild (6) Power K

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

More juvenile maidens but just two race for the first time. (8) WOW WOW has a 3rd and a 2nd from two starts so far, both at 1000M and both times settling midfield and running on strong. The extra furlong can suit here and he looks the one to beat. (14) NAMSAN HORANGI draws the car-park but might like the additional furlong that he has compared with his 5th place on debut when he ran on pleasingly. He may need some luck in running early but expect some improvement nonetheless. (5) HANGANG BOSS also finished off well when 4th on debut over 1000M on November 6th. Among the fancied ones, he gets the best of the draw and can go closer here. (12) FLYING GOLD was similarly strong late on at his first time of asking and along with (7) SPUTNIK are among others in the placing frame.

Selections(8) Wow Wow (14) Namsan Horangi (5) Hangang Boss (12) Flying Gold

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Filly maidens here. Having run well for 3rd on debut, (5) GOLD KAISER had no luck from gate fourteen at her second start on November 7th, using up plenty of energy to find a promising positon before quickly laying out and weakening. From a much better draw today and with Moon Se Young climbing aboard, she is worth taking note of. (3) DIA POWERCAT’s previous attempt at this distance didn’t go too well but she looks ready for another crack following a solid 3rd place over 1000M in a good time on October 30th. From a good draw she should be in this a long way. (9) ARCH MEMORY was doing her best work late on when debuting in 4th place over 1000M on November 13th. Up in trip here should suit and she can go closer. (11) SPEED GALLOP and (6) MAGIC JUDE are others who can trouble the judges.

Seoul Race 4: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

The form here is patchy to say the least. (12) GREAT EYE has stuttered a little in his latest two but has shown ability at this distance especially when 2nd three starts back, coming from off the pace. The wide draw isn’t too much of a concern and while Moon Se-young will have had swifter conveyances, this may be another winner. (4) V QUEEN has been consistent if unspectacular across eight starts to date but she has registered the fastest time of any of these at the distance and from a good draw should be in contention here. (9) SOJUNGHAN DANGSIN returned from ten months out to run a creditable 7th of twelve at 1200M on November 6th. She should have come on for that run and can improve here. (5) WONDERFUL CAT and (2) SONGAM PLAYER are others in the hunt.

Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 10)

The final leg of the delayed 2021 Korean Triple Crown finally takes place at Seoul on Sunday afternoon. Just eight runners will compete but they include Heat Yegam and Winner’s Man, the winners of the first two legs of the Series. Before that, racing gets underway on Friday with a seven-race card from 12:40 to 18:00. All betting locations will be open but attendance must be pre-booked using the MyCard app and proof of vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

Racing returns to Busan where Complete Value won last weekend’s Korean Breeders’ Cup to be crowned Champion Juvenile

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

(3) WIND HIGH stepped up to this distance at start number three on October 8th and recorded a good 3rd place having sat handy throughout. She draws nicely here, carries the same light weight, and has solid claims to make the breakthrough. (1) ANNIKA GIRL has been knocking on the door for a while and took a step forward with a good 2nd place over this trip on November 7th, having settled well back. The inside gate gives options to her rider and she should be close at hand again here. (9) BARAM GONGJU was caught wide and then well back at her latest start over 1300M before flying home in the closing stages for 3rd place. She went well at this trip three starts back and should be doing her best work late on again. (8) PICTURE JASPER is another who comes in off a last start 3rd. (4) SEONGSIL SONYEO the logical next best.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

The exposed form here isn’t great. (4) UNBRIDLED QUEEN tackles this distance for the first time and is the only one in the field who has a 2nd place finish to her name. She has the ability to run on and with Seo Seung-un returning to the mount has as good a chance as any of making her breakthrough here. (3) WORLD FLOWER comes in off two consistent performances at this distance, last time overcoming a wide draw to run on well for 4th with a couple of today’s rivals behind her. She gets a much better gate today and should be going close. (8) OMEGA GIRL comes back in trip after recent outings over a mile. She has posted a decent time at this distance and in this company should be competitive. (5) GOLDEN BROOM hasn’t done much in three starts so far but likewise hasn’t done much wrong either. His best finish is a 4th over 1000M but he stuck to his task over 1200M last time and can be in the mix here. (6) NEW FRESH has slowly shown signs of improvement and is another with minor money hopes.

Busan Race 3: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

He may have only finished in midfield in his latest two but (8) WILD BLUE has the fastest time among these over the distance and today finds himself in more amenable company. Expect him to sit on pace or handy here and he can win. (1) CHEONHA NUMBER ONE comes up in class having scored his maiden win at start number eight over 1200M on November 5th. He came from a handy position that day, finishing off well and while he comes up to this trip for the first time, he draws nicely and carries a light weight. (9) ADELE SMART is the only one of these to have already won at the distance and that alone makes him a contender again here while (5) HAVE A GOOD TIME didn’t go well on his previous try at 1400M but draws much better today and if he can get on pace, then he has claims. (3) GOOD STAR another with minor money hopes.

(10) OREUDA showed good speed on debut on October 15th to quickly get to the front and run on to win over 1000M. This is further and slightly harder given that it’s up in class but with some natural improvement he looks very much in this. (7) TTEUGEOUN MANNAM is the big danger. Since resuming following nine months out, she has a 2nd and a 3rd to her name, both at this distance and the latter at this class three weeks ago when she sat just behind the speed throughout and was beaten only by a couple of decent ones. She has a real chance here. (12) KING ALLIE was a winner on debut back in April and followed it up with consecutive 3rd place finishes. He hasn’t raced since July but looked very well when winning a November trial in a fast time and while the wide draw doesn’t do him any favours, he should be competitive first-up. (6) CATCH THE VICTORY and (3) TWO TWO LIME are others in at least the placing frame.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

(11) LANE KILLER got his maiden win over a mile two starts back before running 2nd at this distance on his first attempt at class 5, beating three of today’s rivals in the process on November 19th. He does come up slightly in the weights and drawing wide is never easy at 1800M in Busan but he is very much the one to beat here. (3) CENTUM THOR ran 4th in that race. He is yet to win in eleven attempts but has consistently gone close and has strong claims on another money finish here. (6) OLD CHEONHA is up in class and distance following a maiden win at start number five over a mile on November 19th. His racing style suggests that he should cope with the additional furlong and he can’t be ruled out. Nor can (8) ACE FOUR TEN, who has good experience at this level and is rarely far away. (7) DOCTOR PRO another who could place.

(7) DOCTOR TAKE came from midfield to comprehensively score over this distance on November 12th. He comes up in class here but there isn’t too much to fear and he has every chance of winning again. (2) SEUNGNI TOUT looks to be the main rival. He’s been a model of consistency at this class and comes in after a good 3rd over a mile at his latest start in November. He comes up 3kg in the weights but draws nicely and must be considered. (6) GREAT DANCE was a solid class and distance 4th on November 19th and should be in the mix again while (5) DONGBANUI SIJAK comes up in trip following a decent 2nd place at 1400M. The latter comes down in the weights and looks very nicely in here. (1) YEONGBONGSAN, a class and distance winner at odds two starts back is another one in the frame in a competitive race.

It’s about time (10) ROCKY SKY returned to the winner’s circle. He has won just the once from fourteen starts but has finished as runner-up on no fewer than seven occasions, most recently at his last start when racing against several of today’s rivals at this class over 1400M on November 14th. The wide draw may not be ideal but he should be the one to beat here. (5) BABEL HIT was the winner that day, coming from well back to score. He comes up 3kg in the weights as a result but warrants respect. (9) AMOR FATI is up in class after an all the way win over 1200M on November 5th. He carries a really light weight here and should measure up in today’s company. (4) GEUMA PSYCHIC ran 6th in that November 14th race, positing a fast time, and should be aiming to get closer today. (6) RAON THE POWER was an also-ran in the November 14th race but has plenty of speed about him and can be given another chance.

Seoul & Busan Champion Juvenile Sunday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 5)

It’s Champion Juvenile Sunday at Busan where the Korean Breeders’ Cup over 1400 will decide the best two-year-old of 2021. Twelve go in the race which is the final one on Busan’s seven-race card which runs from 11:10 to 16:40. There are ten races at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00. All betting locations within Korea will be open with a cap of 80% of indoor capacity. Attendance must be booked in advance through the MyCard app and proof of vaccination against Covid-19 are required. Here are the previews of every race:

Yeonngwanguilegend is among the favourites for the Breeders’ Cup (Pic: KRA)

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens in the opener with just two racing for the first time. (6) JAY TROSS just came up short when favourite on what was her second start on October 30th at this distance when 2nd all the way around and just couldn’t get to the winner. The time was good, and she will be red-hot favourite to get it right this time. The main danger may be one of the debut-makers. (2) GLOBAL FIRST ran a solid trial and while that was back in September and she needs a run to avoid having to qualify again, a couple of others in this race also went in that heat and she handily dispatched them. From a good draw, she can go close. (8) CASH BACK was significant improver at start two on November 7th when leading early and ultimately finishing 3rd over this distance in a decent time and won’t need to improve too much to place here. (9) G STAR has been solid if unspectacular across two outings so far and beat a couple of these at his latest appearance. (3) ACE PLAN another who can improve.

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens and seven of the twelve race for the very first time and it is from those debut-makers that the top picks come from. (11) GREEN CHEETAH put in a very good trial, running seemingly within himself with just a little effort asked for towards the end. It was a fast time and while he draws wide, Franco Da Silva in the saddle should be able to help him overcome that and win. (2) LEGEND NUMBER ONE was a bit slow to begin in his trial but ran on very pleasingly, under hands and heels, crossing the line 4th in a fair time. He draws well and if he gets away smoothly, rates as a chance. (5) RAON THE TANK too wasn’t the quickest out of the traps in his trial but made good ground later and was unhurried in his finish. (10) SUPER CRACK beat a couple of his when trialing fairly in November, an improvement on his first qualification heat. You Hyun-myung climbs aboard for the race and he has placing chances. Among the experienced ones, (8) MONEY CASE is the clear pick having finished 4th on debut back in August. He has been back to trial since and can benefit from his experience here.

Several of these raced one another at class and distance on November 7th. (2) NUMBER ONE TARGET finished the best of them, recovering from a bump at the start and running on to finish a good 2nd, her best finish to date. We’ll stick with her to beat them again and this time go one better. It’s probably that (3) RUBY CAT will be favourite to overturn the form from that day though. She has steadily improved across four starts today and was 3rd in that November 7th race. She was on the other end of that bump with Number One Target at the start but recovered well. If her improvement continues on the same trajectory that it has done so far from start to start, then she can be winning here. (1) NO SMALL SUN comes back up in trip following consecutive 4th place finishes over 1000M and from the inside gate can be a danger. (11) MORNING PEARL ran a much-improved 2nd last time out and along with (10) EUNHYE CHUNGMAN, 5th in that November 7th race, is to be considered for a place.

(8) B. K. HANA ran a strong 2nd in a fast time over 1000M at her latest start on November 5th when handy and running on. She ran 5th at this distance on debt in August before finishing well back in a good race in September. She is in shallower eaters here and from the inside gate and with Perovic on her back, she is the one to beat. (1) HAEGA TTEUGO is one of two first-time starts in the race and seems to have potential. It took him two goes to qualify but he won the second of those attempts, breaking fairly before taking the lead and running on in a good time. If he brings that form to the races, then he can go close. (6) NEW CROWN has mixed his form across seven starts so far, but was a strong 3rd at his latest appearance, running on well from midfield. A repeat will see him in the finish today. (11) GEUMA STARLET and (5) HOT PLAY are others in the frame.

(3) GUITARIST beat a couple of these on his way to 2nd place at this class and distance on October 30th. It was his best performance to date and fastest time of any of these that have tried the distance and should be enough to give him favourite status here. If he fails to arrive in tune then (4) THAT’S MY BOY and (2) JEOLMEUN YOUNGUNG, who came home 3rd and 4th in that October race, look set to be the best place to take advantage. Both came form off the pace that day to finish well and That’s My Boy is significantly better drawn this time around. If you don’t fancy that race very much, then (6) SANGSEUNG HAENGJIN and (5) SOUJU came home 2nd and 3rd when they raced each other over 1400M on November 6th and look the next best.

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1600M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

A very tricky race but something has to win. We’ll therefore take a chance on (2) YEONSEUNG BRAVO who, barring a dismal spin around 1400M two weeks ago, has been racing with some consistency recently. He has the fastest time of any of these at this distance and from a nice draw can get that latest run out of his system here. Probably favourite is (7) BARBELL STORM, who made a big step up to this trip at start number four on November 12th, having previously only raced over 1000M. He led into the home straight and ultimately came home 3rd in a run of merit and can have come on for that. Beating him that day was (10) SOL INVICTUS, who scored his best finish so far on his twentieth start. He might not have as much improvement in him as Barbell Storm but warrants some respect here. (4) SILVER LADY and (1) CHEONMA YEONGUNG are other placing hopes.

Seoul

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens with six of the twelve racing for the first time. (3) DUSON DRIVE has probably done enough to warrant favourite status after a 7th and a 6th in his first two outings, in fair times. He draws nicely, can be on pace and can win. (5) TITAN SOCKS debuted over 1200M scoring a decent enough 5th place having previously performed well in a trial when he led. Dropping back to 1000M and from a central gate, he should be on speed and can get closer today. (12) DOWN THE ZONE finished down the field on debut but her time measures up in this company and she can improve despite the wide draw. Among the debut-makers, (2) CHEONEUNCHONG won her trial and while the time wasn’t fast, she did nothing wrong and in a race as soft as this, she can have fair claims first up. (1) JEWELRY BEST another first-timer who could sneak some money.

He draws nicely today and looks the one to beat. (9) MUNHAK FOREST has been getting closer with a 3rd and a 2nd in his latest two at 1200M and 1300M respectively, leading much of the way both times. Expect him to be on pace again and to be in this for a long time. (3) THUNDER HORSE ran 4th to Munhak Forest’s 3rd when they met on November 6th at this distance. While he is yet to finish in the top two, he has no fewer than seven top0five finishes from his twelve starts and can aim for another today. (1) P N S HER never got going over 1000M last time but on her second start managed a 5th over this distance. She draws much better today and can improve. He enters here having finished 5th at his latest start when he came from a wide gate to sit handy and run on. He draws better today and has every chance of overturning the form on (4) KING CRUSH, who came from even wider that day to run 3rd. That marked a significant uptick in form at his fourth start and while he gives 5kg to Posa Posa again, has strong claims and will probably start as favourite. In a race where the exposed form is not strong, a chance has to be given to the only first-time starter, (1) HEUNGHAENG DAEBAK. He led his trial, ultimately finishing in 3rd place in a fair time and from the inside gate has every chance of going well first-up. (9) PURGE QUEEN and (6) TK PLEX are others in the hunt.

While he was a little one-paced in 6th at his latest start on November 20th, the margins weren’t huge and from a good draw and Victoire taking the mount, he has fair claims here. (11) FAST TRACK has finished off his races well so far, including a 5th over 1200M at his most recent on October 24th. The draw won’t be a problem and the slight step up in trip may well work in his favour. (9) GABO SARANGHAE has the fastest time among those who have tackled this distance before and she comes in off a good 4th at her last start. She can be on pace here and be in this a long way. A previous attempt at this distance two starts back saw him lead and fade but he looks ready for another crack here and should be the one to beat. (8) RUFFIAN PARK is another maiden with plenty of money finishes in his record. His recent efforts have all been at this distance and he should be there or thereabouts again today. (3) AMAZING WHIZ does have winning experience albeit all the way back in February. He tackles two turns for the first time having run on nicely for 3rd at this class over 1300M last time out and looks a good placing shout here. Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (December 3)

There’s plenty to still be decided in what’s set to be a hectic final month of 2021. There is the final leg of the Triple Crown to come, plus the conclusion of the race for champion filly and mare, as well of course as the big one, the Grand Prix Stakes on Boxing Day. The first item on the agenda is to decide Champion Juvenile and that will be resolved in the Korean Breeders’ Cup (KOR G2) at Busan on Sunday. Things get underway at Busan on Friday with 7 races from 12:40 to 18:00. Moon Se Young is among several Seoul based jockeys in town for Sunday’s race, who also have rides on Friday’s card. Also in action will be Kim Hye Sun, who reached her latest career milestone last weekend. Here are the previews:

It’s Busan Friday

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile filly maidens open proceedings. (9) QUEEN’S DAERO has run well for 4th and 3rd in two starts so far, finishing both in fair times. She comes in off six weeks out and draws marginally better and with You Hyun-myung climbing aboard, could make the breakthrough here. Kim Hye-sun rode four winner last Sunday and she has solid claims to pick up where she left off with (3) HANEUL MISO. She significantly improved at start number two on November 7th when prominent throughout and only narrowly beaten into 2nd. From a good draw she will be on pace again and can go one better. Among the first time starters, (7) GREEN PAPAGO was the fastest in trials, coming from off the pace to run on well. She has fair claims first-up as does (2) GLOBAL YEOSIN who was on pace throughout her heat and ran 2nd in a similarly decent time. (12) ALL CROWN wasn’t especially quick in her trial but she did cross the line first and is another to take note of.

(3) CHIEF OFFICER returned from three months out to run a significantly improved 2rd place at 1200M on November 5th, beating a couple of these in the process. He comes up a full 4kg in the weights which would normally be a red flag given he had done nothing prior to it, but the form in this race is so patchy, that 3rd is enough for him to go on top. He was ridden on pace for the first time that day and despite the additional trip should be again. (2) HERO MAN came from off the pace to run 6th at this distance on November 14th. He draws better today and seems to be the main danger. (1) OBAEK JANGGUN ran 8th in the same race, running on from an unpromising position. The time he recorded there, while not fast, is enough to put him in the mix in this company. (11) DOCTOR CANDY is another who showed some signs of improvement at her latest appearance when 4th behind Chief Officer at 1200M. She along with (12) RHIANNON POINT, should be in the placing frame.

(3) BEOLMAUI STAR was an all the way winner over 1000M on debut on November 5th. He comes up in both class and distance today but should have enough about him to handle both and he can win again. (11) GOLDENTHUNDERBOLT ran 2nd in both his first two starts before finding things touch in the Gimhae Mayor’s Cup on his first try at 1300M. He should have come on for that and while the draw isn’t ideal, he can be given another chance today. (4) SUNSET MELODY was a winner at this distance on debut at class 6 level and while she weakened to 6th place on her first try at this level on November 7th. She should be in the mix here, as should (1) GOLDEN who finished one place ahead of her in 4th in that race having led for much of the way around. (10) NAMED returned from six months out to run 8th of eleven in a fair time at this trip on November 14th and can build on that run here.

Fillies (and one mare) only here. (6) B. K. MARSHALL has never been worse than 3rd in three starts so far and got her breakthrough at her latest outing when she settled back before running on strong to score at this distance on November 7th. She comes up in class again here but finds herself in very amenable filly only company and looks to be the one to beat. The main danger is perhaps one of the three first-time starters. (2) UNBREAK led in her trial ultimately crossing the line a close 2nd place. The Shanghai Bobby filly draws nicely to get on pace again and could well be dangerous. (5) HAPPY WITCH has run consistently decent times at this distance and while it seems she has found her level in this class, she can run into some money here. (3) MASTER QUEEN and another debut-maker (8) GEUMA MAIA are others who could go well.

Busan Race 5: Class 5 (1600M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Competitive race here. (1) WONDER BLADE has been a model of consistency across seven starts so far, with two wins to his name. He comes up in trip to a mile for the first time but there is no reason it can’t suit and from the inside gate, he has solid claims. Similarly consistent is (11) QUEEN HARLEY. She beat three of these on her way to 3rd place over 1800M on November 12th and while she is up 3kg on her class and distance win two starts back, she still gets weight from Wonder Blade. She doesn’t need to lead so the draw shouldn’t be too disadvantageous. (5) GOLDEN KAISER was 4th in the November 12th race and is another one in the hunt to match or better while (6) QUEEN VRONSKY comes in off a smart class and distance 2nd on November 5th. That was a big uptick on her recent form but she only comes up 1kg in weight and can go well again. Up in class (4) ADELE CROWN, a front-running winner over this trip on November 5th, is another to be considered.

(7) SPEED MATCH was sent off as an odds-on favourite at this class over 1400M on November 5th but dipped coming of the gate and then bumped another horse, losing position. While he worked home very well, he couldn’t quite get there and had to settle for a 2nd. They come up in trip today and Speed Match can overturn the form on that day’s beneficiary (4) SUNLIGHT BOY, who grabbed an early lead and never let it go, holding off Speed Match by a Head on the line. He comes up 3kg but draws well to get on pace again and must be taken seriously. (2) FLAT BABE is another up in trip following a good win at this class over 1400M on October 22nd. She broke fairly that day before taking up the running at the top of the straight and finishing off well. She comes up a full 4kg but can be competitive again. (6) TOHAM STAR comes in off a strong 2nd behind the very good Domination over this distance at the end of October and along with (3) JUST WIN, is another in at least the placing frame.

(5) B. K JOHN comes in having won his latest two in fine style, both at this distance and most recently at this class when he beat several of these handily on November 5th. He comes up 3kg in the weights but draws nicely enough and should have too much again. (3) GEUMA MYSTIC was second-favourite in that November 5th race but from a wide draw struggled to find position and his challenge never really arrived. He has run well at this distance though and from a much better gate today, he can be given another chance. (10) DIAMOND MARINE crossed from gate eleven in the November 5th race to lead until the middle of the home stretch before battling on gallantly for 3rd. He scarcely draws any better today but can place again. Among those who didn’t run in that race, (12) JANGSAN DOKKI and (9) YEONGSEONG ACE are perhaps the best.

President’s Cup Sunday: Seoul & Busan Race-By-Race Preview (November 28)

It’s President’s Cup Sunday in Seoul. The big race has attracted a full field of sixteen and is race 8 on a 10-race program in the capital which runs from 10:45 to 18:00. There are also 7 races in Busan from 11:10 to 16:40. All betting locations throughout the country are open at 80% of capacity, however, attendance must be pre-booked through the MyCard app. Proof of vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens kick the card off with just three of the twelve racing for the first time. (8) HANGANG CHAMP is set to be the favourite having come a good 2nd in a fast race on debut over this distance on October 30th. That followed an extremely unpromising trial, but he certainly seemed to know what to do on race day and with some natural improvement from that run, he can win. He’ll be a prohibitive favourite. Those wishing to take him on, may side with (7) GLOBAL PRIME. He beat a couple of today’s rivals when running on well for 5th on debut at this distance in a good time on October 31st. (10) GRAND POWER did nothing too wrong on his debut, recording a solid time when 6th at this distance and being close to the pace early. In contrast, (2) MAGIC RUSH came from off the pace to finish midfield in another decent time on his first attempt and is another in the placing frame here. (12) VICS GO, beaten by Global Prime on debut, perhaps the best of the rest.

Juvenile maidens with just two of the twelve racing for the first time. There is some positive experience on show too. (1) RAON THE FLASH has raced twice so far, finishing 3rd on both occasions, both at 1000M in good times and most recently beating a couple of today’s rivals on October 29th. He has finished off his races well, draws the inside and can win. (2) UNJU HERO beat three of these on his way to 3rd place on debut at 1000M on October 22nd when racing on-pace throughout. He too draws well and will be expected to get a lead here with every chance of going one better. (7) JUMAL BOBAE and (11) ADELE STELLA came home 3rd and 4th respectively in that October 29th race behind Raon The Flash. Both were doing their best work late in that race and should benefit from the additional furlong today. (3) CHOEGANG MARINE was a much-improved 2nd at start number two on October 17th, coming from the middle of the pack and running on, and he is among a number of others with placing chances here.

A big field here but a hot favourite as (5) GLOBAL MAGIC has looked to be working his way towards a victory in his two starts to date, running 3rd and then 2nd, both times at 1000M. He has looked to have plenty of running in him at the finish the additional furlong today may well suit. (13) TAEYANGMA ran well enough when 3rd on debut to be given a crack at the Munhwa Ilbo Cup in early October. That didn’t go well as he knocked up very quickly to finish last. He has since had time off and then trialed and can be given another chance today. On both his debut and his trials, he has finished off well and Moon Se-young climbs aboard. (1) DAEBAK STAR has run well in both outings so far. He is an on-pace type so the inside gate should help his cause and he will be expected to lead. He has raced at the front and come from midfield and run on so the wide draw shouldn’t be too much of a concern and he can break through here. (4) USEUNG GANGJA comes in off a career-best to date 3rd place on November 7th when he also registered the fastest time of any of these at today’s distance. He looks nicely in here to match of better today. (5) PICTURE JASPER is a stablemate of Green Speed. She hasn’t done much in her three starts so far but ran on well enough on her return from six months out three weeks ago to suggest that the additional furlong today may help. (11) TINA has the fastest time among those who have attempted the distance so far, something she achieved three starts back and she looks nicely in here to go close. (7) DREAM SPEED comes up in distance for the first time after three creditable attempts at 1000M. Like Cheollichong, she had been racing decent company and holding her own and may find this more amenable. (13) WONDERFUL WOMAN significantly improved at her second start, coming home in 3rd place. He comes up slightly in the weights for that performance but nevertheless is the pick to go one better this time. (11) STORM BROWN came home in 3rd place in that race on November 5th. With an apprentice aboard, he has strong claims to go close again. (4) NAMDO ILDEUNG finished 4th in the same race, having previously run 3rd at the same distance. She draws nicely again and looks to be building up some consistency. (1) WINNER FALCON didn’t offer too many clues on debut when somewhat slow from a wide draw over 1200M and finishing in the middle of the pace. Competitive race. (1) PARAN WANGJA has run consistent times over this distance and while he was a slightly disappointing 5th over this distance at his latest start on October 9th, the margins weren’t huge. and it was arguably a tougher race than today. From the inside gate, he can get on pace early and could be the one to beat. (2) HI HI is another who has shown consistency and also holds the fastest time among these at this distance, although that was recorded back in March on a very wet track. He came from the middle of the field to run on for 3rd over 1400M at his latest start and is a danger here. So too is (12) LADY FIRST. She was a smart winner on debut in August at 1000M and while she could only manage 5th on her first try at class and distance back in September, she came back lame after that and can be given another chance here. (4) THUNDER CHAMP comes in following a runner-up finish over 1300M on October 16th when he led from the gate until the final furlong. He should be in the mix here too. (8) HANEUL JEONSA was a commanding winner on debut on October 22nd, when he broke fairly but quickly worked his way to the front and ran to win easily. He comes up in both class and in distance today, but neither should be a problem and he can win again. (3) AGAIN TOUCH hasn’t quite kicked on from her excellent performance on debt but Touch Star Man’s half-sister should have enough about her to be competitive here. She wasn’t a factor in the Gimhae Mayor’s Cup but she gets a better draw than did in both that and her previous two races since her win and she should go close. (2) LIGHT STORY was similarly impressive on debut over 1000M but was flat on reappearance over 1400M three weeks ago. The drop back in trip may suit today. (11) UNJU EUTTEUM broke through two starts back at this distance before running 4th on his first try at this class over 1400M on November 7th, when he led for much of the way around. Juvenile maidens with all but one of the twelve racing for the very first time. Several of the newcomers look competitive but we will side with the one who has experience. (11) RAON THE JET debuted on October 3rd and having settled midfield, ran on to finish 4th in a fair time.  Both the runner-up and the 3rd place-getter that day have since gone on to win their next starts and Raon The Jet can frank that race’s form here. (4) CUPID VOW was an all the way trial winner in a fair time on October 29th. He draws well to lead again and looks set to be the main danger. (5) GOOD NISEN ran 2nd in that trial having sat handy throughout and he too should be there or thereabouts again. Among the newcomers, (6) EAGLE POINT recorded the fastest time in trials and while it was a slightly wetter track than most faced, that alone is enough to being him into the calculations. Juvenile filly maidens with four of the twelve racing for the first time. We’re going to side with experience, though. (11) HWASUBOON has raced twice finishing 2nd on debut and then 3rd, both of them at this distance in good times. The draw is not ideal here but she should be able to overcome that and should have too much. (8) LUCKY INDY ran well on debut but then improved for 3rd place at start number two at this distance on October 24th, leading for much of the way. She should be on pace again and has every chance of going close. (12) BURUI KKOT similarly showed promise on debut when 5th in a decent time at the distance. She can come on for that run and while she draws the worst of all, can run on strong here. Maintaining the theme of the wide gates, (10) GREENBACK won a trial before putting in two creditable performances in the summer. She races for the first time since August and can go well first-up today. The first-timers don’t exactly leap out from the trial reports but (2) CUPID JUMBO perhaps has the best chance of making an immediate impact.

He draws the car park today but he settled midfield and ran on last time so as long as he doesn’t find himself with too much to do, he can win here. (6) APPLE MINT came home in 3rd place that day. He was first-up following five months out and should have come on for that run. He has Perovic aboard and with the better draw could overturn the form on Mighty Sunshine. (2) YESULIYA steps up in trip for the first time following a solid 3rd place over 1000M on October 23rd. That was an uptick in form and from a good gate, he can continue to make progress. He finished off his races well and today’s extended trip may suit. Only four of these have raced at the distance before and (10) RUNNING NUMBER ONE probably has the right to be favourite based on his 2nd place at it two starts back when he ran on from midfield. It wasn’t a fast time but he should benefit from that experience and has every chance here. (9) HWARYEOHAN MISO has hinted at ability across three starts so far including a 2nd place two starts back at 1200M. He too has finished off races pleasingly enough and can adapt to two-turn racing. She was beaten just under a length by (10) BEST TAP but gets the better of the draw today and can overturn that form. Best Tap is a big danger. He ran 2nd in that race continuing his consistent run of form at the distance and registering another good time. He is tactically versatile and won’t need to lead here so the draw shouldn’t be too much of a disadvantage. (9) YELLOW CAT comes up in class following a good win over 1300M on October 10th when she came from well off the pace to run on very strongly. She carries a nice light weight here and should measure up in this company. (12) BYEOLBIT BOSEOK is yet to win in seven attempts but has five top-four finishes and having overcome wide draws before, can go close again. (3) DAEWANGU another in the hunt in a very competitive affair.

Its President’s Cup weekend with the big race taking place in Seoul on Sunday. Before that the weekend’s action gets underway at Busan on Friday with 7 races from 12:40 to 18:00. All betting locations across Korea are open (at least for now) with an attendance cap of 80% of indoor capacity. There is no walk-up admission available and reservations must be made through the MyCard app. Proof of vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

It’s Friday. It’s Busan.

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens open the card with seven of the twelve racing for the first time. Having won a September trial, (8) SEOGWI PLUS debuted in a n all-filly race at this distance on October 24th and ran around in 2nd place the entire way, well-beaten by a good winner but comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. She won’t need to improve much on that to win here. The main dangers look to all be first-timers. (6) COLORFUL WIND crossed the line 1st in her trial having sat handy and finished off nicely. It was a fair time and should stand here in good stead here. (7) SKY JEJUHYANG made all to comfortably win her trial in an unhurried fashion and should enter the calculations. Fillies (and one mare) only in this big field class 6 maiden. After two goes at 1000M and one at 1400M, registering consistent times in all three, (10) GOLDEN POWER tackles this distance for the first time and is perhaps ready to win. She ran on well for 4th last start at 1000M and this could suit. (6) CHEONGMA POWER too looks to be working her way towards the winner’s circle. She has the join-fastest time of any of these for the distance and comes in having run a good 2nd and 3rd in her latest two. Today and apprentice takes 4kg off her back and that could be what she needs to make the breakthrough. She’ll most likely be on pace from the start and can go all the way. (11) LOOKING CAT is one of only two in the race who has won already, albeit all the way back in January over 1400M. She hasn’t raced since March and while she only trialed adequately, shouldn’t be overlooked. (4) DOCTOR TANGO has offered nothing in three previous outings but fairly bolted up in a trial two weekends ago and can be given another chance here. (2) UNBRIDLED QUEEN another in the hunt.

She comes up in trip but from a good draw she can lead and it would be a surprise were she to be beaten. (4) FANTASTIC LEADER comes in following a good 2nd place over class and distance on October 24th when he sat midfield before running on and only very narrowly missing out. He comes up 3kg in the weights but should be competitive. (7) NICE WORLD came home in 3rd place in that October 24th race, continuing his run of very consistent form, finishing between 2nd and 4th in all five starts so far. He surely continues that record here. (12) INDIAN PART is yet to win in eighteen tries but is rarely far away with eight placed finishes. (5) QUEEN OF HEARTS comes in following a decent class and distance 2nd place three weeks ago and from a nice draw can aim to repeat while (9) WONDERFUL WORLD is another up in class, in his case following a good win at this distance on November 12th when handy early before striking the front on the turn and running on well. He can measure up at this level. (3) K K WON is yet to win in fifteen attempts but has a solid placing record as well as the fastest time among these at a mile. He returns to shallower waters today and under a light weight and from a good gate he should on the lead from the start and prove very hard to beat. (10) MUJEOK BULPAE has proved very consistent across his nine starts to date. He beat a couple of these when 6th at his latest outing in a hot race over 1400M on October 31st and steps back in trip for the first time in a while. Draw a line through the latest outing of (11) B J MISS when well beaten in the Luna Stakes Oaks trial over a mile in October. This should suit much better and while she is drawn wide again, she carries a very light weight and can be in the finish. (7) COPY THAT was a very good winner over this distance first-up on October 10th. He then ran 4th over 1400M on his first try at this class two weeks ago and can keep his good run going here. (4) YEONGGWANGUI TIME and (8) FUTURE KING are others with placing claims.

Busan Race 7: Class 3 (1800M) Allowance / KRW 75 Million

(3) ALPHA STAR was an all the way winner over a mile at class 3 level on October 1st. Up in class and in distance today, he draws nicely and while this is significantly harder, he has claims to win again. (12) MAN OF TOP beat three of these on his way to 3rd place at class and distance on October 22nd, continuing a recent run of good form. Gate twelve over 1800M at Busan is never easy but he doesn’t need to lead and if he can find a decent position then he can go close. (2) POKPUNG EONDEOK was a smart class 4 winner over a mile two starts back before running a very good 2nd to Fantastic Man at this class and distance back in August. This is his first start since then but he draws nicely and should figure in the finish. (9) QUATTRO MAX and (8) YEONGGWANGUI FIGHT are among others who should be in at least the placing frame.

Meni Hero Surprises At Busan While Raon The Fighter Upends Seoul

There were super features at both Busan and Seoul this past weekend as both tracks hosted their respective Owners’ Association Cups. At Busan there was a shock with Meni Hero leading home the field, while at Seoul a new star was born as Raon The Fighter dominated an elite set of sprinters.

The Busan Owners’ Cup on Sunday saw a quality field meet the starter over a mile, headed by Blue Chipper, along with Tiz Plan and Doctor Carson then a mix of young talented horse stepping into the higher levels Including Yeongung Louis a close 3rd in the SBS Sports Sprint to Eoma Eoma at level weights, as well and the unbeaten Success Macho.

They would all be beaten. The start was even other than Yeongung Louis veering out slightly and it would be Black Musk who led from Blue Chipper and the ever-reliable King of Glory.

Black Musk’s challenge would falter in the home straight while Blue Chipper would maintain his charge but drifted wide. Tiz Plan made his way forward but closing the best was 20/1 chance Meni Hero, who struck the front just over a furlong from home under jockey Ham Wan-sik, and ran on to win by just under two-lengths from a resurgent Tiz Plan. Wang Beotkkot closed strongly for an unlikely 3rd while Blue Chipper was an always game 4th.

It was a quantum rise in results for Meni Hero, whose only previous class 1 success had come two starts back over 1400M. By the great stallion Menifee, he is out of Pocketful Of Money (by Running Stag), who was a long time holder of the 1800M track record at Seoul Racecourse. Only four-years-old, there could be plenty to come. Tiz Plan showed he is still a force to be reckoned with in 2nd while Wang Beotkkot was a revelation in 3rd. As for Blue Chipper, he briefly hit the front with 300M remaining and while he couldn’t hold on, showed he still can’t be dismissed in any company.

A day earlier at Seoul Racecourse, an elite field lined up for the SROA Trophy at 1200M, headed by Eoma Eoma, winner of the SBS Sports Sprint and of ten races from twelve starts in total and East Jet, winner of nine races including last year’s edition of this race. The 2020 SBS Sports Sprint winner Morfhis was present, as was the unbeaten three-year-old Raon The Fighter, a winner of seven from seven up to Class 2 level in very fast times.

Eoma Eoma was sent off as the odds-on favourite but after an even start, Raon The Fighter quickly headed the field ahead of East Jet and with the favourite caught wide. It stayed that way until the home straight which Raon The Fighter entered a length clear. And then he just kept going.

Eoma Eoma put in a huge effort to find the fence and to grind out 2nd place from the fast-finishing Morfhis with East Jet in 4th. But they were running a different race to Raon The Fighter, whose jockey Park Tae-jong was afforded the luxury of being able to ease his mount in the closing stages having taken a long leisurely look back over his shoulder. The margin of victory was six-lengths on the line in a time barely outside the track record.

It was a statement performance that has turned the existing order on its head. Eoma Eoma didn’t get the greatest of trips but even so, there are few similar races in history in Korea that his performance would not have won. While Raon The Fighter entered unbeaten, there is always the question in such circumstances of whether they will match up in truly elite company. The answer was an emphatic “yes”. Where Raon The Fighter goes next, or even what distance he tackles, as he has won up to 1800M already, is the hottest topic in Seoul right now.

Raon The Fighter is a three-year-old colt by Bayern and out of Clarinda (by Empire Maker). He was imported in-utero which meant that although he is officially classed as Korean-bred, he was ineligible for the three-year-old Classics this year. There is no limit on what races he can take part in from now on though, and it would seem there is no limit in his potential.

Busan Owners’ Cup Sunday: Busan & Seoul Race-By-Race Preview (November 21)

After Raon The Fighter’s spectacular win in the Seoul Owners’ Association Chairman’s Trophy in the capital on Saturday afternoon, it’s the turn of Busan to stage its edition on Sunday. The Busan Owners’ Cup is Korean Group 3 and will be run over a mile. It features the likes of Blue Chipper, Doctor Carson, Tiz Plan as well as the unbeaten Success Macho. There are 7 races at Busan from 11:10 to 16:40 and 10 at Seoul from 10:45 to 18:00. All locations are open for customers, however, attendance must be pre-booked through the MyCard app and proof of vaccination against Covid-19 is required. Here are the previews:

Seoul Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens to begin with and six of the eleven will race for the first time. (11) YONGHOJIMA is set to be a warm favourite. Following a promising trial, the Take Charge Indy colt ran 2nd on debut over this distance on a fast time, settling midfield and running on. The draw is not ideal, but it shouldn’t matter. The optimistically named (10) QUEEN OF RACING ran a useful enough 5th on debut at this distance in a fair time from the same wide gate she draws today. (2) FOREVER DREAM has improved across two starts so far, running a fair time when 5th over this distance at his latest. He draws nicely again here and shouldn’t be discounted. Among the first-time starters, (6) MABAWI looks the pick. The Rock Hard Ten colt was a front-running 2nd in his October trial in a good time and from a nice central draw can go well first-up. (8) BEAT UP another first-timer with claims.

Busan Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 60 Million

Juvenile maidens with five of the ten racing for the first time. However, it’s hard to look past (4) I WILL BE FREE. He ran a close 2nd on debut in a fast race over 1000M on October 15th, settling midfield and running on strong. He shouldn’t need to improve on that performance much, if at all, in order to win here. (6) FUNNY LIFE has a 4th and a 3rd in two starts so far, both in fair times at this distance. She is likely to be on pace here and should be involved at the business end of the race. So too should (10) YEONGCHEON SOLE MIO, who ran 5th to Funny Life’s 3rd when they race each other at this distance on October 17th. Were it not for the widest gate, he may even have been favoured to overturn that form. Among the first timers, (3) ILNYEOM CHEONHA ran a decent 2nd, running on well and can be considered first-up. (5) VICTORY NINE, who benefits from an apprentice claim this time, is another in the hunt.

Seoul Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

Maiden fillies here. (6) SISEON JUMA comes back in trip after a run over 1300M when from a wide draw, she was slow away and ultimately ended 6th. We’ll go on her previous showings at this distance though, including a 2nd place in a good time. With a good gate today – or at least better than last start – she has claims. Likely favourite is (1) SWEET CAMP. Two starts back she came close to making all over this distance, ending in 2nd and then from a handy position ran 3rd at her latest try. From the inside gate she will on pace early and has every chance of leading all the way. (10) BOOSTER ROCKET comes in off an improved 2nd place over 1300M at her last start in September. She’s had ten weeks off since then, but the wide draw shouldn’t be of concern, and she can go close again. (3) SILVER STAR and the first-up (7) DELPHINI are other minor money hopes.

Busan Race 2: Class 6 (1200M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

A big field for this standard maiden. Only three of them have a runner-up finish to their name and we’ll side with (1) DROMOS to take full advantage of her inside gate to lead early and all the way. She comes in following 2nd place at this distance on October 22nd, her third career start, and with a touch of natural improvement, she can win. (10) BLUE SKY ran 3rd on debut at this distance on October 10th, beating a couple of todays rivals in the process. She had previously shown consistency in a couple of trials and can make progress here. (14) ADELE BOSS is down no favours at all by the draw, he has a very nice turn of foot about him. With a 2nd and a 3rd in his latest two, both at 1000M. He steps up in trip for the first time and if the gates were reversed between hm and Dromos, so might the top picks. (4) WONDERFUL SMARTY is yet to finish in the top two in sixteen attempts but has plenty of minor money finishes in races like this, while (2) SPRING FIRE is another who shouldn’t be too far back

Seoul Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

We’re set to have a warm favourite here in the shape of (3) WONDERFUL NIKIYA. She is yet to win in thirteen attempts but has the fastest time of any of these at the distance and comes in after a solid 3rd place on October 23rd when she was handy to the pace throughout. This is arguably a weaker race and from a great draw she can get to the lead right away and she can win. (4) BROWN CHARM has mixed his form across three starts so far but he comes up in trip here at it may well suit. Punters will certainly be alert to Moon Se-young’s presence aboard. (5) CURRERECUS has been consistent, if not exactly quick, across ten starts today and that consistency may see him to another place finish today, while (8) M J STORM and (2) HELLO GEUMSEONG are others in the hunt.

Busan Race 3: Class 6 (1400M) Allowance / KRW 25 Million

She is yet to win but (9) CHEONGHO LEADER has five top-five finishes from eight starts so far as well as the fastest time of any of these at the distance by some margin. She beat a couple of these on her way to 3rd place at her latest start on October 29th and has proven versatile in running well when on pace or from behind. She is favoured here. (6) YEONSEUNG BRAVO is a clear second pick. He ran 5th behind Cheongho Leader two starts back before leading until the home straight over a mile in his latest outing. He will run on here and can be dangerous. (3) MONEY BAG has mixed his form across his eight starts so far but he is by no means alone in that. On his day he has some talent, and he has a great draw here. (7) BEST HAMSEONG has a 4th and a 5th from two starts so far, both at 1200M. He is expected to be on the pace here and can be involved for a long way. (8) EDGE has just raced the once and could be the wildcard.

Seoul Race 4: Class 5 (1400M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

Competitive race here. (1) LUCKY APPEAL was a winner at this distance at class 6 level two starts back before coming from well off the pace to dead heat for 3rd on his first try at this class on October 23rd. He has tended to get a bit far back in his races, but the inside gate should give his jockey some options and while his running style does mean he may need a bit of luck, he can win. (4) M J BEST comes back up to this trip for the first time since January. He has come on plenty since then and has been running very consistent times over 1300M at this class. He too can get a bit far back, but he has claims here. If you prefer front-runners then despite the wide draw, (10) WINNER IS WELL may be the way to go. He is racing for the first time since May but looked well when trialing two weeks ago and could be a winner first-up today. (12) REAL PACK draws the car park and comes up in class but posted a good time when 2nd at this distance at his latest start and can measure up here. (9) MAD BLADE can have a line drawn through his latest and is worth another chance here.
