Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (August 18)

The weekend’s racing gets underway at Busan on Friday afternoon with a 10-race card from 14:30 to 21:00. Notes on all races (1-6)  for overseas simulcast below:

Race 1: Class 6 (1000M) Allowance / KRW 40 Million

1. SPECIAL POWER – Three slow efforts so far. 9th of 11 on latest at 1300M. Outsider.
2. BEAUTIFUL ACT – Was 200/1 on debut on May 19th but came 4th. Not seen since but could match that.
3. VICTORY ROAD – Only beat one home on debut at 1000M on July 7th. Lots to find.
4. ATOMIJI – Best result a 2nd over 1300M in June. 3rd of 12 last time ahead of Busan Bolt and favourite to score here.
5. SILVER LINE – Took a while to qualify going through a lot of trials. Can’t be backed first-up.
6. EDGE OF WINNER – First-time starter. Trialed up ahead of Silver Line in July. Watching brief here.
7. FULL HOUSE – Beat Atomiji in trials way back in March but only beat one home on actual debut in May. First start since.
8. BLESS YOU – Best a 3rd place ahead of Beautiful Act Atomiji in May and then 5th last start behind a few decent ones. Two months off since and should be looking for career-best here.
9. SEONHO – First-time who trialed up ok. Half sister to some modest ones who were capable of winning at low levels.
10. BOLD RULES – Looks the best of the first-times. Competent in trials.
11. BUSAN BOLT – Best from nine starts so far is 5th but she was less than length behind Atomiji last time on August 6th and can seek a career best here.
12. GOLDEN AGE – Much improved 2nd on return from three months off on July 14th. Can go well again.

Verdict: (8) BLESS YOU, (2) BEAUTIFUL ACT and (4) ATOMIJI raced each other all the way back in May, finishing 3rd, 4th and 9th respectively. However, it’s Atomiji who has appeared to come on the most since then and Thomas Gillespie’s filly gets the nod here. She beat (11) BUSAN BOLT last time and that one can challenge again as can (12) GOLDEN AGE, much improved last time on return from a spell. You never know with the debut-makers but none of the four here look immediately promising.

Selections (4) Atomiji (8) Bless You (12) Golden Age (11) Busan Bolt

Race 2: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

1. JANGHAN JILJU – Best a 3rd place over 1000M in April. Not raced since 6th of 11 at 1000M on May 5th – her worst finish so far. Not impossible.
2. PICHICHI – 5th behind Seda at a mile in June and then 7th of 12 last stat on July 21st at this distance. Midfield finish par again but top jockey on today.
3. ACE DOLPUNG – 5th and 3rd in two starts so far both at 1000M and most recently on August 6th. Extra distance should suit and he has a big chance.
4. TONGHAP BULPAE – Front runner who has tended to fade in each of his starts so far. Does have a 2nd at this distance though and can match today.
5. DAEHO MYEONGGA – Last of 9 on debut on July 21st. Can improve here.
6. NEULPUREUN DRAGON – Finished in mid position on both starts so far. Similar expected here.
7. GOLDEN BULLET – Looked to be getting closer but has gone cold a little in latest two. A bit to find today.
8. SEDA – Best result came at 1600M when 3rd ahead of Pichichi in June. 6th of 12 last time at 1300M but can improve here.

Verdict: We’ll go with the up and comer here and that’s (3) ACE DOLPUNG. He’s not been spectacular in his 5th and 3rd place finishes but the extra distance may well suit, it’s a top trainer and jockey combination and the competition is modest. He should be on speed early along with (4) TONGHAP BULPAE who has had a bit of a problem staying on late but is in with a shout here. Likewise (8) SEDA and (1) JANGHAN JILJU should be competitive.

Selections (3) Ace Dolpung (8) Seda (4) Tonghap Bulpae (1) Janghan Jilju

Race 3: Class 6 (1300M) Allowance / KRW 22 Million

1. MANNAMUI SIJAK – Well back behind New Happy Day and Jibong Yeongung latest start on August 6th.
2. BLACK FINE – Started poorly and never featured when well backed over 1000M on July 21st. Showed promise before that, inside draw and further today and should be better.
3. NEW HAPPY DAY – 14 races without a win but she consistently comes close. 4th on August 6th ahead of a couple of these and today could be her day.
4. POWER BOW – 9th on both outings so far and still plenty to find.
5. JIBONG YEONGUNG – Beaten by New Happy Day two weeks ago. Yet to win in 22 and probably won’t here but can find some minor money.
6. ARIYA – 6th of 11 on July 14th was her best so far. Can continue to improve today.
7. CHAM HAENGBOKAN – Best so far was 5th over 1000M in weak race on July 14th. Two previous tries at this distance haven’t gone well but improvement possible.
8. MALIBU RULER – Managed 3rd place at the distance in June and while he’s not managed to follow up in two efforts since, looks well in here.

Verdict: Not a strong field and it could be the turn of 14-race maiden (4) NEW HAPPY DAY to make the breakthrough. She’s not quick but she always runs on diligently and is rarely too far away. (8) MALIBU RULER has run well at this distance before and can get close while (2) BLACK FINE is likely to make the early pace and may be suited by both draw and distance today. (6) ARIYA best of a limited rest.

Selections (2) Black Fine (3) New Happy Day (8) Malibu Ruler (6) Ariya

Race 4: Class 5 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 40 Million

1. HWARANGUI HUYE – First start since March. Trialed up adequately but won’t be well backed.
2. SMART MARINE – First start since February. Looked reasonably sharp in a quick trial.
3. KOREA HUNTER – 54th start today. He’s not a quick starter but runs on and will pass a couple late on. 5th behind Royal Kelly in July.
4. ROYAL KELLY – Class and distance winner on July 23rd. Carries an extra 3kg today but if she gets to the front early, she should win again.
5. JEOKDOUI HWASIN – Has come close plenty of times at this level. 7th of 12 over 1200M two weeks ago.
6. METELITSA – Returned from five months off to run 6th behind Beonggeulbeonggeul on August 5th. Can get closer today.
7. GWANGYAUI JILJU – Only beat a couple home on latest and looks up against it again.
8. BEONGGEULBEONGGEUL – Beaten by Buyoeng Tower and Jeokdoui Hwasin on July 14th but improved 3rd ahead of Metelitsa last start. Can find the money again.
9. BUYEONG TOWER – Good and unexpected 2nd place ahead of Jeokdoui Hwasn and Beonggeulbeonggeul in July but struggled on return two weeks ago.

Verdict: (4) ROYAL KELLY made all to win at class and distance on July 23rd and she’s favoured to repeat against fairly modest opposition here. (6) METELITSA returned from an absence to run a decent 6th behind (8) BEONGGEULBEONGGEUL on August 5th and can get closer today while (3) KOREA HUNTER should also be in the frame.

Selections (4) Royal Kelly (6) Metalitsa (8) Beonggeulbeonggeul (3) Korea Hunter

Race 5: Class 4 (1000M) Handicap / KRW 55 Million

1. YEOWANGUI TANSAENG – Shown a bit of improvement since returning from a couple of months off. 5th of 12 at 1000M on July 14th and could match that here.
2. CHARTERED DREAM – 4th over 1200M two weeks ago her latest prize money. She wins plenty even though she’s never won and can pick up some more small change today.
3. TIGER SLAM – First start since 4th, half a length behind Chartered Dream on June 16th. Decent colt, top jockey on again and with a good start, can come close.
4. VALKYRIE – Not too far away in latest starts but does usually find a few too quick.
5. BANJIUI JANGMI – First start since April. Won her trial and must be considered.
6. BAEDARI HANI – Two wins and two 2nds from four starts, all at this distance. 2nd at class and distance on July 16th and favourite here.
7. SECRET MARINE – First outing since March. Struggled in three attempts at this class prior to layoff. Trialed up ok but won’t be well backed.
8. TWO TWO KINGS – Last of seven on debut on July 21st. The only way is up.

Verdict: (6) BAEDARI HANI looks a promising sprinter and she can continue the strong start to her career here. She should be able to get on pace early and can lead all the way. The talented (3) TIGER SLAM returns for the first time since running 4th behind (2) CHARTERED DREAM in June and both can be competitive here as indeed can (5) BANJIUI JANGMI, who races for the first time since April and looked sharp when trialing.

Selections (6) Baedari Hani (3) Tiger Slam (5) Banjiui Jangmi (2) Chartered Dream

Race 6: Class 3 (1800M) Handicap / KRW 75 Million

1. SPEED MARK – 4th and 5th in latest two at 1400M and 1200M. Up to two turns for the first time but should beat a few.
2. FIELD SCAMPER – Hasn’t found things much easier since being relegated from class 2. Slight improvement last time though when 4th of 7 at distance ahead of Daseot Me.
3. KOREAN TANK – First start since April. Had lost his way a little in two outings before the break.
4. SUPER MATCH – Returned from four months off to run 4th, but within a length of, White Castle and Tough Country last time. Can go closer today.
5. WHITE CASTLE – 2nd ahead of Tough Country and Super Match on latest start. Gets close here too.
6. TOUGH COUNTRY – Winner at this class over 1200M in May and comes in off back to back 3rds, beating Daseot Me at this distance in June and then 3rd between While Castle and Super Match last time. Giving weight away but a big chance.
7. DASEOT ME – A bit to find having been beaten by Tough Country and Field Scamper in recent efforts.

Verdict: Competitive race. (5) WHITE CASTLE beat (6) TOUGH COUNTRY and (4) SUPER MATCH as the three of them finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th over 1400M on July 14th. There was less than a length between them that day and those three fill out the top three selections here but it could be in any order. Today’s distance should favour Tough Country but he is giving 5kg of weight to the others. Among the ones who didn’t go that day, (1) SPEED MARK, looks the best.

Selections (4) Super Match (5) White Castle (6) Tough Country (1) Speed Mark
