Busan Friday: Race-By-Race Preview (January 13)

Power Blade and Diferent Dimension ran overnight in the Dubai World Cup Carnival meeting at Meydan with the pair running 3rd and 7th respectively among 15 runners in the 1600M Handicap. Their home track is Busan and it’s on the South Coast where Korea’s weekend racing gets underway on Friday with 11 races from 11:30 to 18:00.

English Race Cards can be found here. Notes on overseas simulcast races are below:

Key
Fast Starters: Expected fastest starters today
Start-200M: Fastest average time for Start-200M (most recent 6 starts)
200M-Finish: Fastest average time for 200M-Finish (most recent 6 starts)

Race 4: Class 6 / 1600M / Allowance / KRW 20 Million / 13:40

Really rare opportunity for class 6 horses to have a go at a mile so needless to say it’s a full field and none of them have had a chance at the distance before. Were ten months between (5) THE BEE GOLD’s debut and second start. He looked much improved on his return two weeks ago and can continue to improve here. (7) YONGWANGDAM showed ability at 1300M and is one of a number who should appreciate the trip while Kim Young Kwan’s (8) FOUR NINES comes in following back to back 2nd places and looks the likely pace-setter here. Those are the three standouts but in such a race there are plenty of possibilities among which (9) STYLISH and (3) DONGNAM DAEBAK look to be the most likely of the rest.

Selections: (7) Yongwandam (8) Four Nines (5) The Bee Gold’s (9) Stylish
Next Best: 3, 10
Rating: –
Fast Starters: 3, 8
Start-200M: 3, 8, 12, 9, 1
200M-Finish: 8, 10, 11, 5, 7

Race 5: Class 5 / 1000M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 14:30

(11) KEUNJAYU is yet to win in five but comes in following three consecutive 3rd place finishes. Last start on December 31st, she beat three of her rivals here at this distance and has every chance of getting a career best finish. She may not be favourite though. (4) LOOK AT ME and (8) JEOKDOUI HWASIN were both behind her that day but both can go well here, the former especially with a more favourable draw and top jockey booking. Another yet to win is (5) B.K. SAY, who’s up in class following two 2nd place finishes, is likely to lead and should go close. The rest look distinctly average with (1) KWAEDO YEOGEOL perhaps most likely to improve on recent form.

Selections: (11) Keunjayu (5) B.K. Say (4) Look At Me (8) Jeokdoui Hwasin
Next Best: 1, 7
Rating: 7, 4, 1, 11, 5

200M-Finish: 8, 1, 5, 4, 10

Race 6: Class 5 / 1300M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 15:20

Competitive all-filly race and (8) WORLD PEACE is up in class following a facile six-length win a month ago and there’s no reason why she can’t follow up here. She is attesting further than the minimum distance for the first time though so for those looking for proven ability at 1300M, (11) DAEJIUI HUIMANG will be the pick. (2) WINNING GILI has yet to win at all in thirteen outings but doesn’t usually miss by much and can add some more prize money here even if one or two will likely be too quick again while (5) BULKKOT CHEONGCHUN too should have the beating of plenty. (10) SULTRY HUMOR won a weak class 6 at this distance in early December and can improve on a poor showing at 1000M later the same month. In a similar way, (12) ADELEUI JINJU was poor on her first try at class and distance last month but gets another chance today with Choi Si Dae returning to the ride.

Selections: (8) World Peace (11) Daejiui Juimang (12) Adeleui Jinju (5) Bulkkot Cheongchun
Next Best: 2, 10
Rating: 11, 8=10, 3, 5
Fast Starters: 2, 10, 12
Start-200M: 12, 10, 11, 4, 7
200M-Finish: 12, 8, 3, 5, 2

Race 7: Class 5 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 40 Million / 16:10

The Peter Wolsley/Darryll Holland combination is the one to beat here. (6) ROYAL RUBY was 3rd at class and distance on December 9th. He was favourite that day so it was a slight disappointment but he did beat two of his rivals here and can beat them again. One of those was (3) SONATILLED who has actually raced once more since then, running in 4th at 1300M on December 31st and he should go close again. He’s expected to try to lead today. (1) CHOEGANG DRIVER showed aptitude for the distance with an unexpected 2nd place on December 18th coming from well off the pace and she is one to watch carefully as is the up in class (5) PRIZE KING who got his maiden win last start at 1200M and tries a longer distance for the first time.

Selections: (6) Royal Ruby (1) Choegang Driver (5) Prize King (3) Sonatilled
Next Best: 10, 2
Rating: 1, 6, 7=11, 3
Fast Starters: 2, 3

200M-Finish: 5, 6, 1, 8, 3

Race 8: Class 4 / 1300M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 16:35

This race is open to imported horses but half of the small field is locally bred and it’s from that half where the favourites are going to be. (5) HAPPY GONGJU enters two for two and while she’s up in distance for the first time, has to be strongly considered. (3) TWO TWO RAPTOR took part in a valuable juvenile race two weeks ago but laid out badly around the turn and finished tailed off. No issues were found and he had been looking extremely promising in his prior starts so he gets another chance today. Also two weeks ago (4) TAEYANGUI SINHWA pulled off an impressive looking win over 1200M at domestic class 5 and completes our likely top three. The other Korean bred (7) BEONGGEULBEONGGEUL does look next best.

Selections: (5) Happy Gongju (4) Taeyangui SInhwa (3) Two Two Raptor (7) Beonggeulbeonggeul
Next Best: 1, 8
Rating: –
Fast Starters: 3, 5

200M-Finish: 5, 1, 7, 2, 3

Race 9: Class 4 / 1600M / Handicap / KRW 55 Million / 17:00

(11) WONDER WALL was 4th in the “Breeders’ Cup” Champion Juvenile race at Seoul in early December before returning to Busan and to the winner’s circle over 1300M two weeks ago. He steps up to a mile today but he is one who is expected to be on the Classic trail this season and needs to be winning races like this. (5) INDIAN KING was 6th in that Breeders’ Cup race last month and races for the first time since. The stable hasn’t been in great form of late but Indian King has shown good potential and can go well here. (7) GIFTED SUN comes in following back to back 2nd placed finishes, most recently at class and distance and is to be considered as is Bart Rice’s (2) DAEHANUIMYEONGSUNG who, while a little inconsistent, is more than capable in this company. Best of the rest looks to be (9) SEVEN PARTY.

Selections: (11) Wonder Wall (5) Indian King (7) Gifted Sun (2) Daehanuimyeongsung
Next Best: 6, 9, 4
Rating: 7=11, 2=3=4
Fast Starters: 1, 5, 6, 11
Start-200M: 11, 4, 5, 6, 7
200M-Finish: 4, 9, 10, 7, 11

Race 10: Class 2 / 1800M / Handicap / KRW 88 Million / 17:30

(10) SUPER CHEOLIN beat two of those when running 2nd by a neck to Beolmaui Sin in a tough race two weeks ago. He has already won at this distance and can win again here. One of those beaten that day was (12) SEONGSAN PAECHONG and he too is sent back out quickly. Earlier in December, he was 3rd behind (7) NAGASINDA and ahead of (9) WONIL JIJON at this class and distance and all three should be competitive here. (11) GOLD MOON beat (1) GOLD BLUE by a head as the pair raced 1st and 2nd over the distance at class 3 last month. They both step up a level here but both can be respected. Expect Gold Blue to be the more backed of the pair today.

Selections: (10) Super Cheolin (9) Wonil Jijon (1) Gold Blue (7) Nagasinda
Next Best: 11, 12, 2
Rating: 10, 6, 7, 2, 4
Fast Starters: 4, 5, 6, 11
Start-200M: 11, 5, 6, 12, 10
200M-Finish: 3, 1, 7, 2, 10

Race 11: Class 3 / 1400M / Handicap / KRW 72 Million / 18:00

With four wins from eight starts so far, (1) LIMITLESS WIN is up in class today but should have enough to see off this field. He’ll likely settle just behind the early leaders and can finish strongly. (10) THE QUEEN was a surprise winner at class and distance on December 9th. (8) YANKEE DREAM and (5) BADA GANGJA were also slightly surprising 3rd and 5th place-getters in what had looked a tough race. As such, all three need to be respected here. (3) SPECIAL ROOKIE hasn’t quite managed to follow up on his early promise but could improve today. Similarly (6) KKEUTPAN BOOSTER just seemed to lose a bit of form at the end of last year but is talented and can run better here.

Selections: (1) Limitless Win (6) Kkeutpan Booster (3) Special Rookie (10) The Queen
Next Best: 8, 5
Rating: 12, 5=10, 3, 8
Fast Starters: 3, 4, 8, 10
Start-200M: 10, 4, 3, 12, 9
200M-Finish: 1, 11, 6, 12, 3
